Notes: Abstract The β− decay of101Zr has been investigated at the fission-product separators JOSEF and LOHENGRIN. The half-life of101Zr has been determined to 2.5(1) s and a level scheme for101Nb has been established fromγ ray singles as well as X/3-γ and γ—γ coincidence measurements. Conversion coefficients for transitions in101Nb and level half-lives between 10 ps and 2 ns have been determined. Three rotational bands are identified among the low-lying levels with band heads at 0 keV, 206 keV and 208 keV. The bands are probably based on the Nilsson configurations [422 5/2+], [301 3/2−] and [303 5/2−], respectively. The deformation has been determined to βq=0.40(4) and 0.41(8) for the ground state band and the band based on the 206 keV level from the half-lives of the first and second excited members of these bands. This shows that the rapid onset of deformation at N=60 which is typical for the A=100 region of neutron-rich nuclei, takes also place in the Nb isotopes. Nilsson model calculations describe the experimental data well, especially the several determined transition probabilities including those for E1 transitions from the 206 and 208 keV band heads to the ground state.

Notes: Abstract The half-lives of seven levels in105Mo have been determined with high precision at the fission-product separator Josef. Theβ-γ-γ triple coincidence method with plastic and BaF2 scintillators was used for a determination of the time between theβ q feeding of a level of interest and itsγ depopulation. A value ofβ q =0.38 (1) for the deformation parameter has been deduced from the half-lives of the first and second excited states. The results of Particle-Rotor model-calculations with the Nilsson parametersκ=0.084 andμ=0.28 support the assignment of the Nilsson orbital [532] 5/2− to the ground state of105Mo.

Notes: Abstract The Hessian fly [Mayetiola destructor (Say)] is a major pest of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and genetic resistance has been used effectively over the past 30 years to protect wheat against serious damage by the fly. To-date, 25 Hessian fly resistance genes, designated H1 to H25, have been identified in wheat. With near-isogenic wheat lines differing for the presence of an individual Hessian fly resistance gene, in conjunction with random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis and denaturing gradient-gel electrophoresis (DGGE), we have identified a DNA marker associated with the H9 resistance gene. The H9 gene confers resistance against biotype L of the Hessian fly, the most virulent biotype. The RAPD marker cosegregates with resistance in a segregating F2 population, remains associated with H9 resistance in a number of different T. aestivum and T. durum L. genetic backgrounds, and is readily detected by either DGGE or DNA gel-blot hybridization.

Notes: Abstract  The pyramiding of genes that confer race- or biotype-specific resistance has become increasingly attractive as a breeding strategy now that DNA-based marker-assisted selection is feasible. Our objective here was to identify DNA markers closely linked to genes in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) that condition resistance to Hessian fly [Mayetiola destructor (Say)]. We used a set of near-isogenic wheat lines, each carrying a resistance gene at 1 of 11 loci (H3, H5, H6, H9, H10, H11, H12, H13, H14, H16 or H17) and developed by backcrossing to the Hessian fly-susceptible wheat cultivar ‘Newton’. Using genomic DNA of these 11 lines and ‘Newton’, we have identified 18 randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers linked to the 11 resistance genes. Seven of these markers were identified by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and the others by agarose gel electrophoresis. We confirmed linkage to the Hessian fly resistance loci by cosegregation analysis in F2 populations of 50–120 plants for each different gene. Several of the DNA markers were used to determine the presence/absence of specific Hessian fly resistance genes in resistant wheat lines that have 1 or possibly multiple genes for resistance. The use of RAPD markers presents a valuable strategy for selection of single and combined Hessian fly resistance genes in wheat improvement.

Notes: Abstract The lifetimes of the three lowest excited members of the rotational ground-state band of103Mo at 102.6, 241.1 and 433.2 keV as well as of the levels at 353.8 and 456.1 keV have been determined through a measurement of the delayed coincidences betweenβ particles from the decay of the parent103Nb and theγ rays which depopulate the levels. A plastic and a BaF2 detector have been used for theβ andγ rays, respectively, in these experiments at the fission product separator JOSEF. The results for all three band members evince that this nucleus has a sizeable deformation, with a value ofβ q=0.34(1). This value is larger than that of the neighbouring even-even Mo isotopes which indicates an odd-even effect. On the other hand it confirms the observation that the Mo nuclei are in general less strongly deformed than their Sr and Zr isotones. Particle-rotor model calculations with the Nilsson parametersκ=0.084,μ=0.28 provide a good description of the ground-state band and of a side band based on the 346.5 keV level, including the new lifetimes. This substantiates the Nilsson orbital assignments of [411]3/2+ and [532]5/2− for these two bands, respectively, where the sideband is strongly affected by a [541]3/2− admixture. There is evidence for an additional band based on the 641.1 keV level for which the assignment [422]3/2+ is proposed.

Notes: Abstract A band with a rotational pattern based on a state at 585.1 keV has been identified in theN=59 neutron-rich nucleus97Sr. Its properties lead to the [422] 3/2 Nilsson-orbital assignment for the band head. There is evidence for a second band with the head at 644.7 keV and the configuration [541] 3/2. Since the ground state and the lowest excited levels are spherical, shape coexistence is established for97Sr. A deformed nature of several levels at 500–600 keV results also from QRPA-model calculations. The structure of the low-lying spherical levels has been studied in the frame of the IBF model. The results of the present investigations lead to a better understanding of theN=59 isotones which constitute the link between the spherical and deformed nuclei atA∼100 as a species with shape coexistence but without any indications of particular softness.

Notes: Abstract A level scheme has been established for 37 94 Rb57 based on studies at the fission-product separator JOSEF ofγγ coincidences following theβ- decay of94Kr. For the 190.7 keV level a half-life of 2.5(8) ns has been determined through the centroid-shift method. The majorβ-decay branch of94Kr proceeds with log ft=3.7 into the 988.4 keV state in94Rb. This transition must be of the 0+→1+ GT type involving the transitionνg7/2→πg9/2. IBFFM calculations have been performed for94Rb, starting from the parametrization used in the previous IBM investigations for the isotope93Rb and the isotone96Y. A theoretical interpretation of the low-lying levels including propositions for the spins is given in a comparison to the available data.
