    Notes: The relaxation function obtained by photon correlation spectroscopy of a liquid near the glass transition has a highly nonexponential decay. This nonexponential behavior can be represented by a distribution of exponential relaxation processes. Using a real-time, 4-bit, 4-sample time, 256-channel correlator we have obtained very high quality depolarized spectra of polystyrene over seven decades in time. The relaxation function was calculated from the data and a least squares fit to the weighting factors of a sum of exponentials was performed using techniques described by Ostrowsky et al. A least squares fit was obtained using a powerful program in the port© mathematical subroutine library called IQP which finds a minimum for the quadratic programming problem subject to certain constraints. This yields the distribution of relaxation frequencies characteristic of a liquid near the glass transition. The shape of the distribution is very similar to the distribution of relaxation frequencies obtained from the empirical Williams–Watts function.

    Notes: Simultaneous temporally and spatially resolved measurements of the phase change and reflectivity of S- and P-polarized femtosecond laser probes are obtained from hot expanded states produced by femtosecond laser heating of a solid aluminum target. The combined set of data provides an integral test of equation-of-state models in a regime up to 10 Mbar and densities of 0.01–1 times solid. The results suggest that target stoichiometry at the few Å level should be considered in the analysis of phase and reflectivity measurements in such experiments. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We demonstrate a novel birefringence compensation technique to reduce the polarization dependence of AlGaAs directional coupler wavelength filters operating in the 770 to 970 nm wavelength range. By using a multiple quantum well structure to compensate intrinsic waveguide birefringence, we fabricated vertical coupler filters with polarization-dependent wavelength shifts from 0.1 to 2 nm, significantly less than those achieved for conventional devices. Experimental results show that both the filter wavelength and insertion loss can be rendered polarization insensitive by this technique. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The Hessian fly [Mayetiola destructor (Say)] is a major pest of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and genetic resistance has been used effectively over the past 30 years to protect wheat against serious damage by the fly. To-date, 25 Hessian fly resistance genes, designated H1 to H25, have been identified in wheat. With near-isogenic wheat lines differing for the presence of an individual Hessian fly resistance gene, in conjunction with random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis and denaturing gradient-gel electrophoresis (DGGE), we have identified a DNA marker associated with the H9 resistance gene. The H9 gene confers resistance against biotype L of the Hessian fly, the most virulent biotype. The RAPD marker cosegregates with resistance in a segregating F2 population, remains associated with H9 resistance in a number of different T. aestivum and T. durum L. genetic backgrounds, and is readily detected by either DGGE or DNA gel-blot hybridization.

    Notes: Abstract  The pyramiding of genes that confer race- or biotype-specific resistance has become increasingly attractive as a breeding strategy now that DNA-based marker-assisted selection is feasible. Our objective here was to identify DNA markers closely linked to genes in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) that condition resistance to Hessian fly [Mayetiola destructor (Say)]. We used a set of near-isogenic wheat lines, each carrying a resistance gene at 1 of 11 loci (H3, H5, H6, H9, H10, H11, H12, H13, H14, H16 or H17) and developed by backcrossing to the Hessian fly-susceptible wheat cultivar ‘Newton’. Using genomic DNA of these 11 lines and ‘Newton’, we have identified 18 randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers linked to the 11 resistance genes. Seven of these markers were identified by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and the others by agarose gel electrophoresis. We confirmed linkage to the Hessian fly resistance loci by cosegregation analysis in F2 populations of 50–120 plants for each different gene. Several of the DNA markers were used to determine the presence/absence of specific Hessian fly resistance genes in resistant wheat lines that have 1 or possibly multiple genes for resistance. The use of RAPD markers presents a valuable strategy for selection of single and combined Hessian fly resistance genes in wheat improvement.

    Notes: Abstract. We have successfully developed a laser system to produce pulses with a wavelength centered at 800 nm, energies above 15 J, temporally compressed to 75 fs and focused to power densities beyond 1021 W/cm2. Enabling technologies include chirped-pulse amplification (CPA), 10 cm aperture Ti:Al2O3 crystals, large diffraction gratings, and an energetic Nd:glass laser for pumping the final two amplifiers. Measurements of the compressed pulse spectrum, frequency resolved optical gating (FROG) diagnostic, and focal spot are presented. We have also investigated and developed a technique for suppression of transverse parasitic lasing in large-aperture Ti:sapphire crystal amplifiers.
