Notes: Summary Thinness at birth is associated with insulin resistance and an increased prevalence of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in adult life. As muscle is an important site of insulin resistance, and because thin babies have reduced muscle mass, thinness at birth may affect muscle structure and function and impair carbohydrate metabolism. We have therefore used 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy to investigate the bioenergetics of gastrocnemius and flexor digitorum superficialis muscles in 16 normoglycaemic women who had a low (≤ 23 kg/m3) and 9 women who had a high (〉23 kg/m3) ponderal index at birth. In the flexor digitorum superficialis study anaerobic metabolism was stressed with a constant heavy workload. Low ponderal index subjects fatigued more rapidly (3.3 vs 5.8 min); as phosphocreatine decreased, the accompanying drop in muscle pH was less than in the high ponderal index group. In the first minute of exercise phosphocreatine fell and adenosine diphosphate rose more rapidly (p=0.04 and 0.03, respectively). Gastrocnemius showed a similar trend late in exercise (this exercise was more oxidative, becoming more anaerobic with increasing workload). These changes were not explained by differences in body composition, muscle mass or blood flow. The findings are consistent with a decreased lactic acid and glycolytic adenosine triphosphate production in the low ponderal index group and suggest the possibility that the mechanisms which control substrate utilisation and metabolism in adult life be programmed during prenatal life.

Notes: Summary White blood cell DNA adducts were measured in coke workers, local controls and countryside controls using the 32P-postlabelling technique. The method detected aromatic adducts including those formed by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Coke workers are heavily exposed to PAHs particularly when working at the batteries. A difference in adduct levels was noted between the coke workers at the battery as compared to other jobs. The adduct levels in the non-battery were higher than those in the countryside controls.

Notes: Abstract The distress associated with radiological investigations may be related to the information and style of parental explanation given to the child and the parents own coping style. In a questionnaire survey we assessed distress in relation to investigations of the urinary tract using the Groningen Distress Rating Scale and the Utrecht Coping List. We found the micturating cystourethrogram (MCUG) to be significantly more distressing than radionuclide investigations. MCUG distress was adversely correlated with passive and palliative parental coping styles. Results suggested that cognitive coping styles modelled by the parents ameliorated distress on dimercaptosuccinic acid scintigraphy.

Conclusion The high level of MCUG associated distress and presence of traumatised children in the MCUG sample, along with the potential for parental contribution to distress reduction, suggests that both children and parents would benefit from more active preparation programmes prior to MCUG testing.

Notes: A computer orientated method is presented which generates meshes of triangular elements in plane and curved surfaces. Depending on geometrical and material variations, the region to be discretized is divided into a number of four sided zones. By using curvi-linear co-ordinate systems, nodes within and on the boundary of each zone are automatically positioned and referenced to a global Cartesian co-ordinate system. Elements are automatically assembled from these nodes. Input data is required to specify the positions and material properties of each zone and how they are connected. Examples are given which illustrate the range of meshes that can be generated. Extension of the method to generate three-dimensional tetrahedral elements is indicated.

Notes: The paper shows a procedure for estimating the shape parameter of a Gamma distribution from a sample. This procedure uses a rapidly converging iteration to solve the maximum-likelihood equation and suggests a simple formula for determing the starting value.

Notes: An apparatus is described which enables the rapid recording of time-resolved emission spectra on a nanosecond time scale. The instrument permits detailed study of the time-dependent photo-physical processes occurring in many polymer systems. The technique has been used to investigate the kinetics of excimer formation in methylene chloride solutions of polystyrene and poly(1-vinyl-naphthalene). Unambiguous evidence for excimer dissociation is observed in poly(1-vinylnaphthalene) but the process appears unimportant in solutions of polystyrene.

Notes: 4-Aminophthalic acid has been polymerized in almost quantitative yield to low molecular weight polymer by electrochemical initiation at a platinum anode. Systems involving the acid, amine salt, and the ammonium salt have been explored; the acid and/or the amine salt of the acid provides the best means of obtaining polymer. Maximum molecular weight is attained in a very short time at low current densities (∼2 hr at 50 mA). Thermogravimetric data indicate a temperature stability comparable to polyamide-imide polymers (400°C). Long reaction times and high current densities decrease molecular weight and polymer yield.

Notes: The electroinitiated polymerizations of styrene, 2-vinylnaphthalene, and 9-vinylanthracene were compared in sulfolane and acetone solvents in the presence of ZnCl2. The relative orders of polymerization rates and polymerization efficiencies, in both solvents, were 9-vinylanthracene 〉 2-vinylnaphthalene 〉 styrene, with faster rates and higher efficiencies occurring in sulfolane. Data obtained from viscosity and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) studies indicate that the molecular weights of the polymers produced in these systems are extremely low, 〈5000. Chemical composition and infrared (IR) spectral data suggest that abnormal transfer reactions (possibly from solvent) may be occurring in the electroinitiated 9-vinylanthracene polymerizations. The polymerization mechanism appears to be cationic in these monomer-solvent systems with ZnCl2.

Notes: The electrochemical polymerization of the amino phthalic acid series has been extended to the following derivatives: 4-(4′-aminobenzamido), 4-(2′-aminobenzoyl), and 4-(3′-aminobenzoyl)phthalic acid. Reactions were performed in both dimethylacetamide and ethanol. Both systems produced a film deposit at the anode which was identified as the amide acid of the starting material. Conversion by heat to the imide produced a brittle coating. Inherent viscosity measurements indicate that only low molecular weight material was formed.
