    Notes: Summary Clonidine-induced hypoactivity was studied in rats made neonatally hypo- and hyperthyroid (PTU or T4 administered between 1–27 days postnatally) as an indication of central presynapticα 2-adrenoceptor function. Paradoxically, at 28 days postnatally both treatments caused an increase in clonidine-hypoactivity compared with untreated control animals, which was not due to sex differences amongst littermates in the various groups. It is proposed that whereas the hyperthyroid neonate data perhaps reflect an enhancement of presynapticα 2 function similar to that seen in the adult rat brain, the result obtained for the hypothyroid neonates could perhaps be due to a retardation of the ontogeny of central noradrenergic neurones.

    Notes: Conclusion We have demonstrated the existence of an anomalous polarization coupling mechanism present in the injection locked TEA CO2 laser. As a direct consequence of this work, a new injection technique has been formulated which permits efficient injection coupling and maximises energy extraction whilst eliminating the detrimental optical feedback effects to which other injection locking systems are prone.

    Notes: Summary Diurnal measurements of low temperature (77K) fluorescence at 690 nm (PS II) from north, south, east, and west facing cladode surfaces of Opuntia basilaris in Death Valley, California were made on six occasions during 1985. The absolute levels of F o(instantaneous fluorescence) and F m(maximum fluorescence), as well as the ratio F v/F m(variable fluorescence, F m-F o, over maximum fluorescence), were greater in the north face relative to the other faces. Diurnal decreases in F o, F mand F v/F mwere found concomitant with increases in incident photon flux area density (PFD). F v/F mwas fairly low throughout the year, indicative of photoinhibition, but became somewhat elevated after a spring rain. In early fall the quantum yield of the south face was considerably depressed relative to that of the north face, and corresponding differences were observed in F v/F m. A decrease in PFD during growth of glasshouse plants led to an increase in chlorophyll concentration, F oand F m, but not F v/F m. Although there was some variability in the quantum yield of well watered glasshouse cladodes, a correlation was found between quantum yield and the light and CO2 saturated rate of photosynthesis. When O. basilaris was water stressed under glasshouse conditions, reductions in quantum yield, F m, and F v/F mwere observed. Reductions in F v/F malways indicated a reduced quantum yield, although the converse was not necessarily so in well watered glasshouse plants. The results of this study indicate that O. basilaris is likely to experience photoinhibition throughout much of its life in Death Valley.

    Notes: Abstract The dynamics of the individual components in 1,4-polyisoprene/polyvinylethylene (PIP/PVE) miscible blends are studied using dynamic stress-optical measurements. While the homopolymers are thermorheologically simple and obey the stress-optic rule, the blends show failure of time-temperature superposition and complex stress-optic behavior. The way in which the stress-optic rule fails reveals the relaxation dynamics of each species. The dynamic modulus and complex birefringence coefficient are analyzed to infer the relaxation of each component. The entanglement molecular weight, M e , and monomeric friction coefficient, ζ0, of each species as a function of blend composition and temperature are determined from the contribution of each species to the dynamic modulus. The effect of blending on M e of each component is small; however, its effect on ζ0 of each species is dramatic. Blending strongly speeds the rate of relaxation of the high T g component (PVE), while more modestly slowing the relaxation of the low T g component (PIP). The dynamics of each species have different temperature dependencies in the blend, which leads to the failure of the superposition principle. Furthermore, both the difference between the friction coefficients of the two species and the difference in their temperature dependencies is greater in blends rich in the high T g material (PVE).
