Tag.
Notes:
Summary The post-traumatic development of immune deficiencies has been linked to the high incidence of multiple organ failure. In a prospective study, diverse parameters of the specific immune system were monitored in 13 patients (6 survivors, 7 nonsurvivors) with injuries of defined severity at the time of admission (〈 2 h after the accident) and 4, 8, and 12 days later. The initial reponse to diverse mitogens (PHA, ConA, and poke-weed) and the lymphocyte count were reduced following trauma and returned to normal on day 8 in only the survivors. The increase in the numbers of TAC-positive cells on day 4 was followed by increases in the numbers of lymphoblasts, and CIg-positive cells, and in serum immunoglobulin ratios on day 8. The OKT4/OKT8 ratio was unchanged.
