Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Bei 43 Patienten mit progressiver Sklerodermie und 24 Patienten mit Morphaea wurden 30 HLA-Antigene der A- und B-Serie bestimmt.
Notes: Summary Fortythree patients with progressive systemic sclerosis and 24 patients with morphea are typed for 30 antigens of the HLA-A and B series. There is an increase of the frequency of HLA-B8 in patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (37% vs. 20% in controls: P〈0.001, P corr.=n.s.). The increase of the HLA-B8 frequency seems to be most pronounced in patients with a diffuse form of progressive systemic sclerosis. 4 out of 5 patients are HLA-B8 positive (P=0.00672). In patients with acrosclerosis is HLA-B8 only slightly increased (32%), but the increase is greater in male patients (44%) and in patients with an early onset of the disease (36%). With the exception of HLA-A1 there is no deviation of the frequencies of any other HLA antigen tested, especially not of HLA-Aw24. The number of patients with morphea is to small for statistical evaluation.

Notes: Abstract A 7 W generator, based on monocrystalline silicon solar cells, was directly wired to an electronic load, simulating the current-voltage characteristic of an advanced water electrolyser. System performance was monitored from January 15 to July 7, 1980. Measurements included current and voltage at the load and at the point of maximum power output, global irradiance and ambient temperature. Solar generator efficiency ranged from 7.5 % to 11.5%. A large spread of ±1% in instantaneous generator efficiency was observed at identical values of global irradiance and ambient temperature. The dependance of the average generator efficiency on global irradiance and ambient temperature is given by a simple relation to a precision of ±0.2%. Load matching was optimized for high global irradiance at high ambient temperature. Averaged over the half year period losses by non-ideal load matching amounted to only 8.9%. Assuming an ideal current efficiency of the simulated water electrolyser, the overall efficiency of hydrogen production was 8.0%.

Notes: Summary New own data and a survey of published data concerning the frequencies of 23 HLA antigens in patients with HBsAg positive and negative chronic active hepatitis (CAH) and healthy carriers of Hepatitis-surface antigen (HBsAg) and high titers of antibodies to HBsAg (Anti-HBs) allow to conclude as follows: 1. Patients with CAH and persistence of HBsAg show a normal frequency of HLA-B8 2. There is no increased frequency of HLA-B8 in HBsAg negative CAH without autoimmune antibodies. 3. Only in patients with HBsAg negative CAH with autoimmune antibodies is the frequency of HLA-B8 is statistically significantly increased (p 〈 0.01 after correction for the number of antigens and different groups of patients compared). These are patients with the autoimmune form of CAH. 4. There exist no significant differences in the frequencies of the HLA antigens tested in patients with HBsAg positive CAH and healthy carriers of HBsAg and Anti-HBs. Thus no indications could be found for HLA-associated factors in the different behaviour to the hepatitis-B virus.

Notes: Spruce wood lignin has molecular weight of the order of magnitude of 10,000-100,000. Furthermore, it is bonded, to a large extent, if not completely, with the polysaccharides of the wood. It is formed by enzymatic dehydrogenation of coniferyl alcohol I. The mesomeric forms II-IV of the radical produced stabilize themselves by combining together to form dimers, the largest proportion of which - owing to the preponderant occurrence of the form III - are quinone methides. The latter stabilize themselves intramolecularly, steric arrangements permitting, forming ethers like V and VI. In the case of the quinone methide VIII alone, an intramolecular stabilization is impossible; this methide is stabilized by addition of water or of a hydroxyl group of the carbohydrates. In the latter case, an etherlike carbohydrate compound is formed which contains a phenolic group and which can hence be incorporated into lignin on further dehydrogenation. Substance VIII can also add on coniferyl alcohol, substance V, or other phenols, and hence it condenses units without further loss of hydrogen (XII and XIII). All of the processes described thus far proceed automatically after the formation of the radicals. The new building units thus formed (V, VI, and other similar units) can also be welded together by renewed dehydrogenation or by the formation of more quinone methides which give rise to addition reactions. By means of this combination of dehydrogenative condensation with addition of phenols and alcohols to quinone methides formed intermediarily, lignin grows to a polymolecule, grafting itself in the process onto the polysaccharides. The path of formation of the molecule also explains the extraordinarily great differences between the oligomeric building units, although in the case of conifer lignin they all proceed from the one substance, coniferyl alcohol. The branching of lignin is explained by the addition reaction. The sequence of the units is fully random, since no matrix provides for a definite order.

Notes: Catechin tannins are formed by the action of protons on catechins, by condensation of the carbon atom from the ether bridge in the 2-position with one of the phenyl rings of the next molecule. As the molecule is bi- or polyfunctional, the reaction can proceed further until it ceases, on account of the low solubility of the reaction product. Lignin is formed by dehydrogenation of p-hydroxy-cinnamic alcohols. The radicals produced stabilize themselves by combining, giving various types of dimeric products. These, too, are phenols and by virtue of further dehydrogenation, are subjected to a mixed condensation and, in part, to polymerization. In both cases, a highly irregular polymer molecule is formed from a single basic substance.

Notes: Under the title “Contributions to the Chemistry of High Molecular Natural Substances” (J. Polymer Sci., 16, 155 (1955)) a short survey of the author's work on cellulose, starch, catechintannins, and lignin is given. The present paper gives a detailed derivation of the kinetic and preparative evidence for the structure of cellulose, starch, and the Schardinger dextrins (cycloglucans).
