    Notizen: Thirty seven of the thirty eight isomers of tetrachlorodibenzofuran (TCDF) have been synthesized by unambiguous routes, and purified. The 1,2,8,9-TCDF isomer could not be thus prepared, and attempts to make it by pyrolysis of appropriate precursors also failed. Retention characteristics of TCDFs under gas chromatographic conditions were determined, and found to agree well with those predicted by an existing mathematical model derived from data obtained for TCDF isomers prepared by more ambiguous procedures. Mass spectral characteristics were also obtained, particularly relative response factors for the molecular ions of the TCDF isomers under electron ionization (EI) conditions. A discussion of the likely transferability of these relative response factors between mass spectrometers of different types is included. Chemical ionization (CI) mass spectra were also obtained, for both positive and negative ions. These CI spectra yielded little structural information not available from the EI data, and problems of lack of sensitivity and of reproducibility render them less suitable for trace analysis of TCDFs. Some unusual ion chemistry was observed under CI conditions, which can be rationalized in terms of pre-ionization attack on the TCDF molecule by free radicals in the source.

    Notizen: Abstract In order to evaluate the possibility of enhancing the sulphur amino acids in grain legumes, we have transferred the gene for the methionine-rich 2S albumin from Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa) controlled by a seed-specific promoter intoVicia narbonensis. The coding region of the 2S albumin gene that has been completely synthesized was fused to the seed-specific leguminB4 promoter fromVicia faba. Transgenic lines ofV. narbonensis were generated viaAgrobacterium-mediated gene analysis of leaves, stems, roots and seeds of four R0 plants revealed that the expression of the foreign 2S albumin gene occurred in a seed-specific manner and that the foreign protein is present at levels ranging from 1% to 4.8% of total SDS-soluble seed protein. Since the current protocol for transformation ofV. narbonensis has not yet been published, a detailed description of the method is given.

    Notizen: Cellular slime mold amoebae have become a model system for the study of cell motility and the cytoskeleton. A basic problem which all cells face that involves the cytoskeleton is how to control their size. The varied ways in which cellular slime mold amoebae change their cell size-by changing the size at which division occurs, by cell fusion, and by control over cytokinesis-are reviewed. A model is presented which attempts to explain how the mechanisms affected in certain cytokinesis mutants in Dictyostelium discideum known as phg mutants could be involved in control of cell size in the predatory slime mold Dictyostelium caveatum.
