Notes: Abstract The feeding behavior ofDrosophila serido on the yeast communities of necrotic stem tissue ofPilosocereus arrabidae were studied in a sand dune ecosystem of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The prevalence of cactophilic yeasts includingPichia barkeri, Candida sonorensis andGeotrichum sp. in the crops and external surfaces ofD. serido reflected its association with the cactus habitat. The effective number of yeasts vectored on the surface of flies was higher than that in the crops. Also overlap between the yeasts from stems and from crops was partial suggesting selective feeding by the flies in the substrates visited. The females had a higher effective number of yeast species and a lower similarity than males with the yeast community ofP. arrabidae. This was probably related to the search for oviposition sites by females. The presence ofPichia thermotolerans-like andPichia amethionina varpachycereana in the flies, but not inP. arrabidae stems, indicated thatD. serido was not limited to this cactus species. The larvae and adults lived in different patches with the adults feeding in patches with higher yeast species richness. The larvae had a narrower feeding niche and higher overlap withP. arrabidae, and preferredP. barkeri andPichia cactophila as food. Adult flies fed on patches with the most frequent yeasts except forP. cactophila. Pichia caribaea was found in higher frequency in the adult crops than in the stems. Our data suggested that there was food selection and diet partitioning between adult and larval stages ofD. serido.

Notes: Summary Nitrosourea induced tumors of the nervous system in rats have proven useful for biochemical studies combined with morphological approaches. The pattern of enzyme activities for acid hydrolases and cytochrome oxidase resemble those previously observed in spontaneous nervous system tumors of man. The activities of 4 acid hydrolases were generally high in the gliomas. This could not be attributed solely to zones of regression or necrosis but was a general characteristic of the neoplasms. The activities were predominantly particulate and most likely lysosomal in localization. In schwannomas a similar increase in hydrolases was found in comparison with normal neural tissues but aryl-sulfatase was not increased. Cytochrome oxidase activities were markedly reduced in all tumors studied. The proportionate reduction with respect to normal brain was comparable to that noted in man. No differences were found with respect to fairly well differentiated gliomas.

Notes: Abstract This paper examines the efficiency and price effects of mergers by applying a frontier profit function to data on bank ‘megamergers’. We find that merged banks experience a statistically significant 16 percentage point average increase in profit efficiency rank relative to other large banks. Most of the improvement is from increasing revenues, including a shift in outputs from securities to loans, a higher-valued product. Improvements were greatest for the banks with the lowest efficiencies prior to merging, who therefore had the greatest capacity for improvement. By comparison, the effects on profits from merger-related changes in prices were found to be very small.

Notes: The phosphorescence from the nylon polymers 6, 66, 11, and 12 has been studied from the aspects of excitation and emission wavelength location and of emission lifetime. In contrast to the other nylons, the 66 polymer exhibits two distinct phosphorescence bands, both of which are sensitive to thermal and photochemical oxidation of the polymer. The species responsible for these emissions are concluded to be carbonyl in nature and their role in the complex reactions that occur during thermal and photochemical oxidation of the polymer is discussed.

Notes: Fluorescence and phosphorescence are observed following the mild thermal oxidation of two model compounds for nylon 66. Both emissions are remarkably similar in structure and in wavelength location to the corresponding emissions normally observed from the commercial polymer. Although the fluorescence could not be characterized, the phosphorescence exhibits several features which are clearly consistent with that of a nπ* carbonyl emission. The role of carbonyl groups in the thermal and photochemical oxidation of nylon 66 is discussed.

Notes: The photoactivity of titania pigments at different loadings in both polyethylene and polypropylene is examined by phosphorescence and carbonyl formation and a correlation between the two observed. A nickel (II) chelate stabilizer proved more effective than a hydroxybenzophenone stabilizer in the presence of anatase. This difference in stabilizing efficiency appears to be due to more efficient quenching of the excited state of the anatase by the nickel chelate than by the hydroxybenzophenone.
