Notes: Abstract The possibility that cerebral tumours may be graded by measuring T1 or T2 with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging was studied. A consecutive series of patients with subsequently verified gliomas was enrolled, and studied with MR. Patients who had prior surgical, chemotherapeutic or steroid treatment were excluded. Single slice multiple saturation recovery and multiple spin echo techniques were used to measure T1, T2 and proton density in the tumour. In 33 patients with cerebral gliomas there were 5 grade I, 12 grade II, 7 grade III and 9 grade IV. T1 and T2 values tended to be smaller in grade I gliomas than in grades II, III and IV gliomas. Relaxation parameters overlapped considerably in tumours with different grades. Proton density values did not show much change between different grades of gliomas. Relaxation parameters cannot be used to determine tumour grade reliably.

Notes: Summary With T1-weighted gradient recalled echo (GRE) MR images and flow compensation, we studied the superior sagittal sinus in 3 normal volunteers and 3 patients with sinus occlusion. In these images, sites of patency of the superior sagittal sinus were identified due to the high signal intensity of the normal sinus. Tumor invading the sinus was nearly isointense with cerebral gray matter. T1-weighted GRE imaging proves to be an effective technique to evaluate sinus blood flow.

Notes: Summary We studied the subjective rating of MR image quality as field strength, slice thickness, number of acquisitions and matrix size were varied. Matrix and number of acquisitions had the most significant effect on image quality. Therefore, in comparisons of image quality, technique must not be disregarded.

Notes: Abstract This descriptive study was undertaken as a pilot test for several questionnaires designed to examine the well-being of caregivers of persons with stroke. This predominantly female sample was found to have moderately few physical symptoms, but to be in considerable emotional distress. Nearly half the sample had anxiety and depression scores above the level identified as suspicious for clinically relevant distress as indexed by the Symptom Questionnaire.1 Anger was also a salient finding: 40% of those questioned scored above the cutoff level for hostility and several caregivers expressed anger verbally during data collection. The degree of psychological distress in these individuals is of importance to all health care professionals and deserves increased attention, both from the perspective of the researcher and from the perspective of the clinician.

Notes: Abstract Aspects of litter movement were looked at in a variety of ways. River bank clearances provided valuable information on litter accumulation and movement, showing a distinctive correlation between flood events and litter movement. Introduction of litter outside of channel deposition (diffuse sources) were limited in the study area in South Wales, UK. A rise in litter deposition occurred for some time after flood events, with the main accumulation occurring in the mid-bank zone. As only some litter types have an increased input during flood events e.g. sewage-derived material from combined sewer outfalls (CSO), accumulation of other litter types, e.g. plastic sheeting could be due to their distribution throughout the catchment. A positive correlation between litter stranding and vegetation was found. During high flows, (75.59 cumecs) litter is removed from sites with little restraining vegetation and deposited where stranding potential is high. Smaller items such as feminine hygiene products were more susceptible to stranding than larger plastic sheeting.

Notes: The combination of supercritical fluid extraction, high resolution capillary supercritical fluid chromatography, and Fourier transform infrared microspectrometry is described for the separation and identification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a coal tar pitch. The variable solvating power of the supercritical fluid was utilized to selectively fractionate the sample. The fluid extract was decompressed through a frit restrictor into the sample cavity of a cooled microvalve injector, where the analytes were deposited and concentrated for subsequent chromatographic analysis. Several of the analytes separated in the chromatograph were collected on a potassium bromide disc at a solvent elimination inter-face for subsequent infrared analysis involving the use of an infra-red microscope accessory. The spectra obtained show the power of this detection technique for distinguishing between isomers.
