    Notes: A general analytical solution, which is more explicit than the one given by Schiffman and Stein,1 for the problem of one-dimensional consolidation of layered soils is presented. A relevant computer program is developed and the computed results on some examples are included. From these results, an in-depth study on the one-dimensional consolidation behaviour of layered systems is then made. It is demonstrated through these examples that both the solution technique and the computer program developed are very efficient. It is found that the effects of coefficients of permeability and volume compressibility of soil on the consolidation of layered systems are different and cannot be embodied into the coefficient of consolidation of soil. The stiffness of soil layer also plays an important role on the rate of consolidation.

    Notes: The equations governing the dynamic behavior of saturated porous media as well as a finite element spatial discretization of these equations are summarized. A three-parameter time integration scheme called the Hilber-Hughes-Taylor α-method is used together with a predictor/multi-corrector algorithm, instead of the widely used Newmark's method, to integrate the spatially discrete finite element equations. The new time integration scheme possess quadratic accuracy and desirable numerical damping characteristics. The proposed numerical solution and bounding surface plasticity theory to describe the constitutive behaviour of soil have been implemented as the computer code DYSAC2. Predictions made by DYSAC2 code are verified using dynamic centrifuge test results for a clay embankment. Importance of initial state of a soil on its dynamic behaviour is demonstrated.

    Notes: A computer program is presented for in-core solution of a large, sparse, unsymmetric, unbanded system of linear equations. The program employs two partially packed arrays (one for storing non-zero elements, and one for column identifications). Used as the pivotal row is the row with the minimum number of non-zero elements. To avoid instability, the pivot is the largest absolute element in the pivotal row. The method was tested on a system of equations encountered in field application of the three-dimensional Galerkin finite element solution of flow and mass transport through porous media. Performance is compared with that of available alternatives.

    Notes: The node Admittance matrices for Water Networks are normally sparse and symmetrical. Advantage may be taken of these properties to reduce the amount of computational time and memory required to solve them. Two node reordering algorithms and an economic system of storing input data are described. The node reordering algorithms minimize the number of fill-ins which would occur in the solution of the node admittance matrix. Only non-zero elements are stored and operated on. Subroutines for the node reordering algorithms and storge of input data, written in FORTRAN IV are included.

    Notes: A computer program for Water Network analysis has been developed usingy sparse matrix techniques for solution. The method used is the successive linearization method where the set of equations [Q]=[Y][H] is solved. In the process, two subroutines for node reordering to preserve sparsity of the Jacobian matrix and a subroutine for solving the matrix by the Doolittle method are included. The method is user oriented and requires a minimum amount of input data and effort. Networks of up to 200 nodes and 300 pipes may be analysed on an IBM 1130 computer with 16K words of memory.

    Notes: This paper investigates the application of the centre implicit method for the determination of the pressure transient in a pipeline, and compares the results with those obtained using the method of characteristics and an experimental investigation. The study shows that there are unique values for the stability criterion (ratio of the linear and time increments) and the artificial viscosity term (a damping factor) used in the numerical computation. The time step and the number of nodes required for the accuracy of the method have been considered. The centre implicit method can be readily adapted to transient flow with variable wave speed provided the established conditions are used.

    Notes: The uncertain settlement response of pile groups is determined using a ‘hybrid’ formulation and a first-order perturbation technique. The spatially varying soil modulus, which gives rise to the uncertainties in the pile group settlement, is modeled as a homogeneous random field. The random field is assumed to be one-dimensional since the ‘hybrid’ formulation does not account for horizontal variation in the soil properties. Using the proposed method, the coefficient of variation of the pile group settlement is computed. The single-pile solutions obtained compare favorably with the solutions from a conventional stochastic finite element analysis. Pile groups of sizes ranging from two to twenty-five piles are studied. It is observed that the coefficient of variation is not significantly affected by the pile spacing as well as the group size. By defining an appropriate performance function, the reliability index of a pile group system is also found to be approximately the same as that of a single-pile system. These observations suggest that the solutions for a single pile may be used to estimate the uncertainties in the settlement response of pile groups.
