Notes: Abstract Nine cytoplasmic male-sterile lines and five restorer lines were used in an incomplete diallel cross to analyze seed effects, cytoplasmic effects, and maternal gene effects on nutrient quality traits of indica rice (Oryza sauva L.). The results indicated that nutrient quality traits were controlled by cytoplasmic and maternal effects as well as by seed direct effects. Maternal effects for lysine content (LC), lysine index (LI), and the ratio of lysine content to protein content (RLP) were more important than seed direct effects, while protein content (PC) and protein index (PI) were mainly affected by seed direct effects. Cytoplasmic effects accounted for 2.41–20.80% of the total genetic variation and were significant for all nutrient quality traits. Additive genetic effects were much more important than dominance effects for all of the traits studied, so that selection could be applied for these traits in early generations.

Notes: A new error estimator is presented which is not only reasonably accurate but whose evaluation is computationally so simple that it can be readily implemented in existing finite element codes. The estimator allows the global energy norm error to be well estmated and alos gives a good evaluation of local errors. It can thus be combined with a full adaptive process of refinement or, more simply, provide guidance for mesh redesign which allows the user to obtain a desired accuracy with one or two trials. When combined with an automatic mesh generator a very efficient guidance process to analysis is avaiable.Estimates other than the energy norm have successfully been applied giving, for instance, a predetermined accuracy of stresses.

Notes: The Zienkiewicz-Zhu error estimator is shown to be effective in problems of plate flexure. When used in conjunction with triangular elements and an adaptive mesh generator allowing a prescribed size of elements to be developed, very fast adaptive convergence for results of specified accuracy is achieved.

Notes: Fluorescence of several new polyimides in which neighboring imides are linked by a N-N bond was examined in chloroform solutions. For the naphthalene-containing polyimide 1, analysis of the emission, excitation, and absorption spectra at different concentrations showed the existence of a ground-state intermolecular charge transfer (CT) complex due to chain association and aggregation. For the perylene-containing polyimides 3-6, the fluorescence was characterized by a low energy band superimposed on the normal perylenediimide bands. This was interpreted as arising from a CT interaction between electron donor-acceptor pairs on the polymers backbone of the same chain, revealing certain degrees of chain coiling of these polymers in solution. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: In a swelling state at a temperature of incipient dissolution, an acrylic fiber is highly elastic just like a rubber. A system of entangled macromolecular chains is considered analogous to a cross-linked rubber network and from the theory of rubber elasticity, the measured extension modulus of an acrylic fiber at the terminal swelling state may be used to calculate the number of entanglements. By means of a capillary rheometer, a series of model acrylic fibers with varied degrees of entanglements were prepared. The entanglements present in these model fibers were then measured by the other two thermal methods (SDSC and SSS/SS methods) already established in our laboratory. The die swell ratios were also measured microscopically at the exit of the capillary rheometer. The experimental results of entanglements measured by the various methods were well correlated, at least qualitatively. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A modification has been introduced to the new superconvergent patch derivative recovery technique recently developed (Zienkiewicz and Zhu, 1991). By use of a locally normalized co-ordinate system, the application of this technique can now be applied to higher-order finite-element shape functions. Numerical studies are carried out for up to 6th-order elements in one dimension and for up to quartic elements in two dimensions, and superconvergent results are obtained for all examples tested.

Notes: An adaptive refinement procedure using a new automatic quadrilateral element mesh generator is presented. The performance of the adaptive procedure in achieving a given accuracy with different mesh refinement strategies is compared. It is found that when using bilinear or biquadratic quadrilateral elements refinement strategies of both mesh enrichment and mesh regeneration can lead to a prescribed accuracy being achieved by the Zienkiewicz-Zhu adaptive procedure1 with the optimal rate of convergence. However, fewer mesh refinement steps are needed if the strategy of mesh regeneration is employed with the newly developed automatic quadrilateral element mesh generator2.

Notes: An effective method is presented for generating three-dimensional boundary-fitted grids. The technique is based on a two-step procedure involving the solution of differential equations and algebraic interpolations. A coarse grid with an arbitrarily given point distribution at all the boundaries is first generated by solving the Poisson equations, with the forcing functions being automatically adjusted during the grid generation to achieve orthogonality at the boundaries. A fine grid with a desired concentration of grid lines is then obtained by fitting tricubic spline functions on the coarse grid. A primary feature of the method is that the mesh spacing can be quickly and explicitly changed while retaining the smoothness over the entire field and the boundary orthogonality. Applications to a variety of geometries demonstrate the performance of the method.
