Photochemistry of (Iso)Alloxazines, IV Dealkylation and Decarboxylation of Short-chainedisoalloxaine-10-alkanoic AcidsWhile 7,8-dimethylisoalloxazine-10-acetic acid (3a) yields 7,8-dimethylalloxazine (“lumichrome”), carbon dioxide, and formaldehyde in an intermolecular triplet photoreaction, 7,8,10-trimethylisoalloxazine (“lumiflavine”) and carbon dioxide are the products of the thermal decomposition. On the other hand, 3-methylisoalloxazine-10-propanoic (2a) and 3,β-dimethylisoalloxazine-10-propanoic acid (2c) undergo an intramolecular photodecarboxylation and cyclisation of the N(10)-side-chain to N(1) in the pH-range of 2-6 to yield the 1,2,5,6-tetrahydro-4H,7H-benz[g]imidazo-[1,2,3-ij]pteridine-4,6-dione system (8) in a triplet reaction, which again confirms the photoactivity of the N(1)-position. In the pH-range 〉 6 the N(10)-substituent is split off via the singlet and triplet state in an intramolecular reaction yielding 3-methylallo? azzine and acrylic or crotonic acid, resp. - The mass-spectroscopic and thermal behaviour of these isoalloxazine-10-alkanoic acids is analyzed (McLafferty rearrangement and γ-hydrogen abstraction) and is compared to the photochemical reactivity.
Notes:
