    Notizen: The metalloid effect on magnetic properties and microstructures of iron-based alloys with ultrafine grain structures was investigated. For Fe73.5Cu1Nb3(SixB1−x)22.5 (0.5≤x≤0.8) alloys with 10–15-nm grain diameters, the permeability increased with Si content. The alloys with x=0.5 and 0.6 subjected to the optimum heat treatment had two different ferromagnetic phases which were composed of an α-Fe(Si) solid solution with high Curie temperature and an interfacial phase with low Curie temperature. However, in high Si alloys with x=0.7 and 0.8, only a phase with high Curie temperature appeared. This result suggests that in the high Si composition range, a complete transformation from the amorphous phase to the α-Fe(Si) single phase was achieved. The disappearance of the interfacial phase which would certainly disturb the exchange coupling between the α-Fe(Si) phase grains would be considered to be one of the factors for the increased permeability.

    Notizen: The magnetic properties of an Fe73.5Cu1Nb3Si13.5B9 alloy with nanoscale crystalline structure have been investigated as a function of the melt temperature. In the temperature range of 1240 to 1380 °C investigated in the present study, the permeability increases with the melt temperature. This result may be explained in terms of the reduction in the magnetic anisotropy as a function of the melt temperature. This is supported by the results for the remanence ratio, which also increases with melt temperature in a similar manner to the permeability. In the latter part of the work described in this paper, the relationships between the permeability and the coercivity, and the permeability and the remanence ratio have been investigated for the nanocrystalline alloy. It was found that the permeability is correlated more closely to the remanence ratio than the coercivity.

    Notizen: Recently, a new contactless Jc measurement technique by monitoring nonlinear responses from a coil mounted in the proximity of a superconducting film was reported by Classen et al. [Rev. Sci. Instrum. 62, 996 (1991)]. An improved method to measure the nonlinear inductive response is developed using an inductance bridge circuit, which discriminates the third-harmonic signal due to the nonlinearity from those of other origins. Moreover, in this technique, the phase of the third-harmonic signal can be used to determine the critical current.

    Notizen: The effect of Cu and/or Nb addition on crystallization processes and soft magnetic properties for Fe-Si-B alloys has been investigated. For Fe-Si-B, Fe-Cu-Si-B, and Fe-Nb-Si-B alloys annealed at various temperatures, the effective permeabilities were very low and decreased considerably as they crystallized, while for Fe-Cu-Nb-Si-B alloy annealed at a temperature above Tx , a very good soft magnetic property was obtained. From DTA analysis of Fe-Cu-Nb-Si-B alloys, it became clear that the combined addition of Cu and Nb expanded largely the temperature range over 100 °C where a single phase of α-Fe solid solution can exist. Above 580 °C, the second crystalline phase such as Fe2 B and some unidentified phases other than the α-Fe phase precipitated, and soft magnetic properties deteriorated rapidly. It is concluded that the combined addition of Cu and Nb makes the α-Fe single phase stable in a broad temperature range, which is considered to be the necessary condition for the superior soft magnetic properties.

    Notizen: White-colored materials synthesized by a thermal annealing of milled GaN powders at 930 °C in a nitrogen atmosphere were identified to be monoclinic β-Ga2O3 nanowires by x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed that these nanowires are single nanocrystals, and energy dispersive x-ray indicated that these nanomaterials are free of any metals. In addition, bundles of these crystalline nanowires in the rectangular-pole shape are a few centimeters in length.© 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Growth behaviors of SrTiO3/LaAlO3 films could be varied substantially by controlling terminating atomic layers of the substrates. In a film on the LaO-terminated substrate, strain-induced roughening was observed. In a film on the AlO2-terminated substrate, the first atomic layer of the interface seemed to have lots of defects. However, the stress became quickly relaxed, so a SrTiO3 film could be grown in a layer-by-layer mode after a few monolayers. All these observations could be explained in terms of chemical matching between the atomic layers at the interface. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: X-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements were executed to compare the nature of defects in SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT) and Bi4Ti3O12 (BTO) films. In the SBT film, it was found that the oxygen ions at the metal–oxygen octahedra were much more stable than those at the Bi2O2 layers. On the other hand, for the BTO film, oxygen vacancies could be induced both at the titanium–oxygen octahedra and at the Bi2O2 layers. We suggested that the difference in stability of the metal–oxygen octahedra should be related to different fatigue behaviors of the SBT and the BTO films. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Using La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (LSCO) or Pt film as a bottom electrode layer, epitaxial Bi4Ti3O12 (BTO) thin films were grown on MgO(001) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. A symmetric Pt/BTO/Pt capacitor structure shows a surprisingly large asymmetric polarization switching behavior, but a Pt/BTO/LSCO structure has a nearly symmetric P–V hysteresis. The strong asymmetric behavior in the Pt/BTO/Pt was attributed to positive charges resulting from interdiffusion at the bottom BTO/Pt interface. P–V hysteresis studies using numerous top electrode materials and Auger electron spectroscopy depth profile measurement also support formation of interfacial charges. Imprint pulse test shows that such an imprint failure cannot be recovered by applying a dc bias field.© 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Epitaxial LiNbO3 films with two orientations were grown on sapphire (112¯0) substrates using pulsed laser deposition. The film deposited at a low oxygen pressure (i.e., 10−4 Torr) was epitaxially grown along the a axis, and that at a oxygen pressure of 10−1 Torr was epitaxially grown along the c axis. Electro-optic properties of these films were quite different, demonstrating importance of controlling the epitaxial growth behaviors. The birefringence measurements of the LiNbO3 (112¯0) film showed a quadratic electro-optic behavior with an effective quadratic coefficient of 2.38×10−15 m2/V2. This behavior was analyzed in terms of the quadratic electro-optic tensor for LiNbO3. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: CeO2 interlayers were used to control growth behavior of Bi4Ti3O12 thin films on MgO(001) substrates. The CeO2 layer grown at 740 °C had a preferential orientation with its c-axis normal to the film surface, so it could be used to grow an epitaxial Bi4Ti3O12(001)/CeO2(001)/MgO(001) heterostructure. On the other hand, the CeO2 layer grown at 650 °C showed a mixed texture of (001) and (111), and this interlayer enabled us to get a preferentially oriented Bi4Ti3O12(117)/CeO2(111)MgO(001) multilayer structure. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
