Notizen: Abstract Cytological diagnosis of carcinomas as well as of other pancreatic tumors is of high validity. By use of the modified Papanicolaou staining method, the procedure is adaptable for rapid intraoperative diagnosis. In order to obtain representative cell material, we have tried both preoperative endoscopic fluid collection and intraoperative fine needle biopsy. Whereas the first procedure often fails because of its technique, the latter is suitable in all cases. No serious complication arose in the 181 patients studied. In 152 diagnostic-ally proven cases, the cytological result was correct 135 times (88.8%). Forty of 44 resectable malignomas were diagnosed correctly. Consequently, the success rate is remarkably high with small tumors for which the indication for resection should be based on microscopic diagnosis.

Notizen: Summary Ultrastructural features of a papillary mesothelioma arising in a hydrocele-sack are reported. The tumour cells presented numerous microvilli, desmosomes, basement membranes and abundant bundles of microfilaments, which all are hallmarks of mesotheliomas. The predominant cell type was the “clear epithelial cell”, but transitional cells and degenerative forms (foamy cells) were also found. The morphology and differential diagnosis of mesothelial tumours arising in the tunica vaginalis propria testis are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract  The epithelial tumours of the adult kidney, in particular renal cell carcinoma (RCC), are a variety of neoplasms that can be classified by morphology and genotype. Although most are well characterised, typical and less typical tumour variants are recognised. There is evidence to indicate that stage is one of the most important prognostic factors, irrespective of tumour subtype. However, the appropriate handling of nephrectomy specimens is essential for accurate evaluation of diagnostic and prognostic factors in RCC. The problem of how to achieve more objective nuclear grading is still unresolved. The use of diagnostic decision support systems offers the possibility of a flexible approach to this problem, while still utilising morphological criteria. The histopathological analysis remains important, but new techniques of molecular and cell biology will be providing new tools of extraordinary power to sharpen the diagnosis and give it a biological interpretation.

Notizen: Abstract  A primary angiosarcoma of the testis in a 74-year-old patient was a highly anaplastic epthelioid angiosarcoma, which was positive for endothelial markers immunohistochemically. The tumour was unrelated to testicular germ cell neoplasm; the patient had received no previous radiation or chemotherapy.

Notizen: Summary Three cardiac Myxomas were studied by light-, immuno-fluorescence and electron microscopy. Acid mucopolysaccharides of the tumour were isolated chromatographically. The surfaces of the “myxomas” were papillary in two cases and smooth in one. The smooth surfaced tumour recurred six months after primary resection; histological specimens were more cellular than those of the papillary tumors and showed nuclear polymorphism and mitoses. The cells of two papillary tumours were identified as endocardial by electron microscopy, however, the cells of the smooth surfaced tumour were typical myofibroblasts. In both types of “myxomas” the cells were rich on cytoplasmic filament that contained acto-myosin. Biochemical investigation failed to reveal any difference between the acid mucopolysaccharide pattern of the two tumour types; isolated mucopolysaccharides being typical for embryonal mesenchymal tissue. The authors agree with Albertini (1963), that “cardiac myxoma” is a misnomer for two different typical endocardial tumours: a true endothelioma and a “special fibroma” (myofibroma or myofibrosarcoma).

Notizen: Summary Electron microscopy of a sclerosing angioma of the lung, a coincidental finding in the upper lobe of a 32-year-old woman. The rare, benign tumor, whose vascular proliferation by light microscopy is reminiscent of an angioma, exhibits a clear epithelial structure by electron microscopy. The tumor may develop out of immature pneumocytes. The paper discusses histogenesis and problems of differential diagnosis (potential confusion with carcinomas).
