Notes: Abstract Measurements of charge separation in rock during stable and unstable deformation give unexpectedly large decay times of 50 sec. Time-domain induced polarization experiments on wet and dry rocks give similar decay times and suggest that the same decay mechanisms operate in the induced polarization response as in the relaxation of charge generated by mechanical deformation. These large decay times are attributed to electrochemical processes in the rocks, and they require low-frequency relative permittivity to be very large, in excess of 105. One consequence of large permittivity, and therefore long decay times, is that a significant portion of any electrical charge generated during an earthquake can persist for tens or hundreds of seconds. As a result, electrical disturbances associated with earthquakes should be observable for these lengths of time rather than for the milliseconds previously suggested.

Notes: Abstract Layers of artificial granite gouge have been deformed on saw-cut granite surfaces inclined 30° to the sample axes. Samples were deformed at a constant confining pressure of 250 MPa and temperatures of 22 to 845°C. The velocity dependence of the steady-state coefficient of friction (μss) was determined by comparing sliding strengths at different sliding rates. The results of these measurements are consistent with those reported bySolberg andByerlee (1984) at room temperature andStesky (1975) between 300 and 400°C. Stesky found that the slip-rate dependence of (μss) increased above 400°C. In the present study, however, the velocity dependence of (μss) was nearly independent of temperature.

Notes: Abstract Laboratory hydrofracture experiments were performed on triaxially stressed specimens of oil shale and low-permeability granite. The results show that either shear or tension fractures could develop depending on the level of differentials stress, even in specimens containing preexisting fractures. With 1 kb of confining pressure and differential stress greater than 2kb, hydraulic fluid diffusion into the specimens reduced the effective confining pressure until failure occurred by shear fracture. Below 2kb of differential stress, tension fractures occurred. These results suggest that hydraulic fracturing in regions of significant tectonic stress may produce shear rather than tension fractures. In this casein situ stress determinations based on presumed tension fractures would lead to erroneous results.

Notes: Summary Leukemic cells from seven patients with acute nonlymphoblastic leukemia and granulocytes, and mononuclear cells from three healthy controls were isolated by centrifugation on metrozoate-dextran. The intracellular accumulation of both the free and DNA-bound forms of daunorubicin and doxorubicin was studied in vitro. The uptake of unbound daunorubicin was higher than that of doxorubicin. At drug concentrations of 1.75 μM and higher the uptake of the free drugs was greater than that of the bound forms, but at lower drug concentrations the uptake was about the same. This could at least partly be explained by a greater dissociation of the DNA-drug complexes at lower drug concentrations. The uptake into normal leukocytes was of the same order of magnitude as that into leukemic cells. There was a great interindividual variation in the accumulation of both free and DNA-bound drugs in the cells from leukemic patients. This variation might be of importance for the prediction of individual sensitivity to the different drugs.

Notes: Summary Forty-four adult patients under 60 years of age with acute nonlymphoblastic leukemia were randomized for induction treatment with one of the following three regimens: R 1 = courses of daunorubicin on day 1+ARA-C on days 1–5; R 2 = courses of daunorubicin on days 1 and 2+ARA-C on days 4–8; R 3 = courses of daunorubicin-DNA complex on days 1–2+ ARA-C on days 4–8. Out of 14 patients, 9 went into remission on R 1, 6 out of 14 on R 2, and 8 out of 16 on R 3. The preliminary results suggest that daunorubicin-DNA complex has the same efficacy for inducing remission as daunorubicin alone, if the same time intervals and dosages are used.

Notes: Summary The turnover of DNA was studied by means of thymidiny14C in different organs of mice inoculated with solid growing ELD tumor. At a tumor size of 13% of body weight, total body weight is unchanged indicating relative kachexiay The mesenteric fat decreased. The liver and spleen increased in weight, a change that was accompanied by increased DNA synthesis. The DNA-turnover of all other organs remained unchanged. In the kidneys and muscles smaller cell populations were stimulated by the tumor inoculation to a transitory increase of DNA-synthesis. An early decrease of label in the spleen and a concomitant increase in the liver, kidney and muscle may indicate cell migration.
