Notes: The interlayer magnetic coupling of a Fe/Si/Fe trilayer shows an analogous feature to that of Fe/Si superlattices. With an increase in Si layer thickness, it oscillates as ferromagnetic (first F), antiferromagnetic (AF), ferromagnetic (second F), and finally reaches a noncoupling (N) state. We have investigated interlayer coupling of Fe/Si/Fe trilayers inserting very thin (1 or 2 ML thick) boundary layers X (X=Ag, Ge, Fe–Si, Ta, etc.). They are expected to suppress interatomic diffusion between Fe and Si layers. Interlayer coupling of Fe/X/Si/X/Fe with negligible interdiffusion is simply F and changes to N as the Si layer thickness increases. Furthermore, Fe/Fe–Si/Fe trilayers which show coupling of first F, AF but not second F, reproduce second F when a Si layer is inserted in the Fe–Si spacer. These results imply that an amorphous Si spacer mediates ferromagnetic coupling between neighboring Fe layers while the first F and the strong AF coupling usually observed in Fe/Si superlattices are caused by diffused crystalline Fe–Si. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary Autoimmune bullous diseases, such as bullous pemphigoid or pemphigus vulgaris. occasionally develop in psoriatic patients. In addition, a novel subepidermal bullous disease with autoantibodies against a lower lamina lucida antigen of 200kDa has recently been reported in association with psoriasis. We describe here a patient with psoriasis vulgaris who developed epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA). Direct immunofluorescence revealed linear deposition of IgCl and C3 at the basement membrane zone. The patient's serum bound to the dermal side of salt-split normal human skin. However, immnumohlol analysis demonstrated that the patient's serum reacted with an EBA antigen of 290 kDa. EBA should be included in the list of autoimmune diseases associated with psoriasis vulgaris.

Notes: Fe (111) single crystal films have been grown on GaAs (111) by the sputter-beam method. Reflection high energy electron diffraction and x-ray diffraction measurements have revealed excellent aligned epitaxial growth of the Fe (111) film on GaAs. No evidence of preferential diffusion of As atoms into the deposited Fe layers has been found in the depth profile of Auger electron spectra. Magnetic measurements clearly show that the Fe (111) film has nearly ideal threefold symmetric anisotropy and exhibits isotropic initial permeability in the film plane, as predicted by theory.© 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The A˜ 3Πi←X˜ 3Σ− electronic transition of a carbon-chain molecule CCS has been observed for the first time by laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy. The species was generated with a pulsed discharge of 0.5% C2H2 and 0.5% CS2 diluted in Ar via a pulsed supersonic jet. A number of bands in the 690–675 nm and 600–615 nm regions (14 500–14 800, 16 200–16 600 cm−1) were observed and assigned to those of CCS using ground state combination differences. Three of the bands in each region were found to belong to the three A˜ 3Πi spin-orbit components of the A˜ 3Πi←X˜ 3Σ− transition (Tv=14 662.777(4) and 16 423 cm−1), and an effective set of rotational constants for the upper states were obtained. The higher energy band was heavily perturbed, preventing the determination of effective constants for this band. These bands have been tentatively assigned as two successive bands in the A˜ 3Πi(n,0,0) progression with a resultant effective value of 1760 cm−1 for the A˜ 3Πi ν1 vibrational fundamental. Dispersed fluorescence spectra from the A˜ 3Πi←X˜ 3Σ− band of CCS have also been observed, yielding definitive experimental information on the vibrational structure of the X˜ 3Σ− ground state for the first time. The three harmonic frequencies were determined to be 1708.2(40) cm−1, 862.5(19) cm−1, and 269.3(13) cm−1 for ω1 (CC stretch), ω2 (CS stretch), and ω3 (CCS bend), respectively. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Synthesis of various serum proteins, such as albumin, prealbumin, α1-antitrypsin, transferrin and α-fetoprotein, by human and rat yolk sac tumors was studied by indirect immunofluorescence and immunoperoxidase techniques. These serum proteins were found to be present in the cytoplasm of tumor cells forming the lining of vitelline cysts, as well as Schiller-Duval bodies and vacuolated meshwork on histological sections. Two of these tumors were cultured. Immunopathological studies revealed that albumin, prealbumin, α1-antitrypsin, transferrin and α-fetoprotein were found in the cytoplasm of these cultured tumor cells. The immunofluorescence of these proteins was also found on the PAS-positive granules, which existed intra- and extra-cellularly.The ability to synthesize these serum proteins of these tumor cells was not affected by tissue culture and was maintained during subcloning. It was demonstrated by electron microscope ferritin antibody technique that α-fetoprotein was mainly synthesized on the ribosomes of the rough endoplasmic reticula of rat yolk sac tumor cells.

Notes: Transplantable rat yolk sac tumor cells produce α-fetoprotein (AFP) and their ability to synthesize AFP is maintained for generations in female rats. However, when they are transplanted in male rats, the AFP production decreases markedly. To examine this sex dependency in AFP production, experiments at cellular and subcellular levels were carried out. In cell incubation studies, yolk sac tumor cells maintained in female rat (YST-F cells) synthesized more AFP than yolk sac tumor cells maintained in male rat (YST-M cells). Using cytosol RNAs prepared from YST-F and YST-M cells, AFP production was studied in cell-free protein synthesizing system derived from wheat germ.In this system, cytosol RNA from both YST-F and YST-M cells directed AFP synthesis. But the amount of AFP synthesized was smaller in the presence of RNA from YST-M cells. From these results, it was suggested that the reduced AFP synthesis by YST-M cells is, at least partly, due to a quantitative decrease in their cytosol messenger RNA coded for AFP.

Notes: In early infancy, the serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) level remains quite high and the clinical interpretation of hyper-alphafetoproteinemia in this age should be made in comparison with its normal ranges. We presented some illustrative cases of early infancy, whose AFP values were formerly considered abnormally high, but later found within normal ranges. Our normal ranges were obtained by statistical calculations of serum AFP values studied in normal subjects: namely infants with inguinal hernia and neonates at birth (the cord blood was used).

Notes: During the years 1952 through June, 1977, 64 children with tumor of germ cell origin were seen at the Department of Pediatric Surgery, the University of Tokyo Hospital. There were 39 mature, 7 immature and 18 frankly malignant teratomas. Sixteen cases had histological features of endodermal sinus tumor in pure or mixed form, and all of the last eight patients showed elevated serum AFP concentrations ranging from 92,000 ng/ml to 952 ng/ml. Serum AFP concentration declined almost to zero ng/ml with a half life of about 4 days when surgical removal was complete, whereas AFP decreased only to 100–200 ng/ml with radiation therapy and chemotherapy alone. Serum concentrations of prealbumin, albumin, alpha-1-antitrypsin and transferrin were almost within normal ranges. Two endodermal sinus tumors were studied by tissue culture, which demonstrated secretion of diastaseresistant PAS-positive hyaline globules. PAS-positive granule is one of the characteristic histologic features of endodermal sinus tumor with demonstrable AFP specific immunofluorescence.

Notes: Serum polyamines were determined by Samejima's method.Total putrescine, cadaverine and spermidine in healthy adults were 0.29±0.08, 0.11 ± 0.08. and 0.43 ± 0.15 nmoles/ml. respectively. Spermidine was not detected in the serum by this method. About half of total polyamines existed in free form in the serum. No significant elevation of serum polyamines was observed in chronic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis. Increased serum putrescine was observed in some cases of malignancies, such as hepatomas (0.76 nmoles/ml. 0.62 nmoles/ml), pharyngeal carcinoma (0.66 nmoles/ml), peritonitis carcinoma (0.60 nmoles/ml) and colon carcinoma (0.45 nmoles/ml). Determination of serum polyamines. especially of putrescine, may provide a potential indicator in some cases of malignancy.
