Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Bei 20 Patienten mit Nasopharynxtumoren wurden die HLA-ABC-Antigene bestimmt.
Notes: Summary HLA typing in 20 patients with tumors of the nasopharynx showed no significantly increased frequency of HLA A2, BW46 (Sin2), and B5 as demonstrated by other authors. In our investigations, we found no particular HLA antigen as a genetic marker for nasopharyngeal tumors in the population of middle and northern Europe.

Notes: Summary To determine what influence the extent of genetic difference and degree of presensitization exercise on reactions to tracheal transplants, orthotopic tracheal transplantations were performed in 189 rats. In groups with minor genetic differences (non-RT1-different combination) and major genetic differences (RT1-different combination), the survival rates were significantly lower in comparison with syngeneic controls. In both strain combinations, presensitization prior to orthotopic tracheal transplantation led to significantly lower survival rates. The survival times of the RT1-different strain combination were obviously shorter than those of the non-RT1-different strain combination. Therefore, the degree of histo-incompatibility and presensitization, detectable only and purposively variable in investigations on inbred strains, strongly influences the reactions to a tracheal transplant. Indications of an organospecific antigenicity of the tracheal transplant have not been found. Thus, the trachea is subject to the same immunological laws for transplantation as all other tissues.

Notes: Summary Tracheal transplants were performed on inbred strains of rats. Monoclonal antibodies were used in combination with the biotin-avidin technique for demonstrating donor-specific RT1 Ac transplantation antigen. Transplantation antigens were predominantly contained in the tracheal mucosal cells. No donor-specific antigens could be found in the mucosa of transplants which survived orthotopic tracheal transplantation for longer than 210 days. This suggests that the mucosa of the transplant is rejected and replaced by a mucosa from the recipient.

Notes: Abstract. The purpose of this study was to evaluate diagnostic MRI criteria in Wegener's granulomatosis of the nasal cavity, the paranasal sinuses and orbits. Between March 1991 and January 1996, 62 patients with biopsy-proven Wegener's granulomatosis were studied with T1- and T2-weighted spin-echo (SE) sequences. In 32 patients coronal postcontrast T1-weighted images were obtained. Mucosal thickening of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses was demonstrated as high-intensity lesions on T2-weighted SE sequences in 57 patients (92 %). Of this group, inflammatory granulomatous tissue was found on biopsy in 30 patients (48 %) in the nasal cavity and in 4 patients (6 %) in the paranasal sinuses. In 23 patients (37 %) biopsy revealed unspecific inflammatory changes without evidence of granulomatous tissue. In 14 patients (23 %) granulomas were depicted as low-signal intensity lesions on T1- and T2-weighted SE sequences in the paranasal sinuses and orbits. In 5 patients (8 %) osseous destruction was found. After gadolinium injection, 12 of 14 granulomas showed inhomogeneous signal enhancement. In two granulomas no enhancement was found. The MRI technique is helpful in the diagnosis of patients with Wegener's granulomatosis. In the initial inflammatory process of Wegener's granulomatosis, it is not possible to differentiate between mucosal inflammation and granulomatous tissue in MRI. In the later stage of granulomatous transformation, granulomas can be depicted as low-signal-intensity lesions. Therefore, Wegener's granulomatosis should be included in the differential diagnosis of patients with low-signal-intensity lesions on T1- and T2-weighted SE sequences of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and orbits.

Notes: Summary To clarify contradictory information in the literature about the immunogenic effect of the trachea, tracheal transplantations were performed orthotopically and heterotopically in two combinations of inbred rat strains. In all in vivo experiments it was possible to demonstrate a considerable systemic immunisation by transplantation antigens. There were no indications of even slight organospecific immunogenicity of the trachea. Thus, the trachea is subject to the same immunological laws for transplantation as all other tissues.

Notes: Summary In order to establish an experimental model for the study of immunological reactions to exogenic immunogens in the upper and lower respiratory system NMRI mice were subjected to inhalation of the mitogenic and inflammatory response inducing lectin concanavalin A (Con A) and bovine serum albumin (BSA). Immunological reactions were induced in the upper respiratory tract and in the lungs. Serologically, the course of the antibody titre was measured by radio-immunoassay over several weeks. Germinal centre reactions in the nose and paranasal sinus equivalents were the morphological correlate. The lungs showed an increase in the number of macrophages and a thickening of the alveolocapillary membrane, but no germinal centre reactions were observed. These morphological and serological results may indicate a priming of the immune response in the upper respiratory tract leading to a subsequent production of antibodies in the lung.

Notes: Summary HLA-typing in 14 of 25 patients with histologically proven Wegener's granulomatosis showed a significantly increased frequency of HLA B7 and B8. No striking relation was found between the clinical course and the occurrence of HLA B7. The increased association between the HLA B7 antigen and Wegener's granulomatosis might be of diagnostic value.

Notes: Summary The Wegener Granulomatosis (W. G.) is a rare disease of uncertain origin and with primary manifestation in the oto-rhinologic field becoming more and more of interest. With 10 of 16 cases first subjective symptoms were in the upper respiratory tract. With further development of the disease, there was involvement of the trachea, lungs and kidney. The diagnosis could be ensured or at least be presumed histologically by biopsies in the oto-rhino-laryngologic field. Multiple endoscopic biopsies from the larynx, trachea and paranasal sinuses as well as radiologic examination are of decising importance for diagnosis. If a W. G. is only suspected, an additional internal examination is necessary, because often only clinical, radiological and histological findings in combination with the development can ascertain diagnosis. For differential diagnosis neoplasms, specific and unspecific infection have to be hold in mind but especially the Granuloma gangraenescens because therapy is different. The treatment of choice in W. G. is cyclophosphamid that has improved considerably the prognosis of W. G.

Notes: Summary For testing the antibody response to a streptococcal infection, ASO-titer and the activity of Streptodornase B had been measured in tonsillectomized patients in comparison to a control group with no signs of streptococcal A diseases. In the patients with chronic tonsillitis the ASO-titer was only insignificantly higher than in the control group. The streptodornase B-activity showed no differences between both patients groups. The streptodornase B-activity and the ASO-titer were also depending on other parameters as the age of the patients and seasonal influences.
