    Notes: We observed the presence of the novel pituitary protein „7B2” and its release in the bovine adrenal medulla. The 7B2 concentration (mean ± SEM) in extracts of the bovine adrenal medulla was 952 ± 155 pg/mg tissue (n = 6). 7B2 was distributed in the chromaffin granule fraction prepared from the bovine adrenal medulla and was released by high K+ and/or nicotine from cultured cells of the bovine adrenal medulla. Co-release of 7B2 with catecholamine induced by nicotine from the cultured bovine chromaffin cells was also observed. In an analysis of the bovine adrenal medulla chromaffin granule fraction on gel permeation chromatography, there was a major peak with an apparent molecular weight of 45,000, whereas a major peak with an apparent molecular weight of 20,000 was found in that on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. On reverse-phase HPLC, a major peak with a retention time of 35 min was observed in the bovine chromaffin granule fraction and in the bovine anterior pituitary extract. These findings indicate that 7B2 is a secretory protein in the bovine adrenal medulla. The possibility that 7B2 might be released with catecholamine, possibly in response to stress, warrants investigation.

    Notes: Superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) microscopes may serve as useful nondestructive evaluation (NDE) tools since they can precisely measure the local magnetic field variation that can be related to the characteristics of ferromagnetic materials. To demonstrate this, we have studied magnetic functionally graded materials (FGMs) in the Fe–Cr–Ni alloy system using a high-transition-temperature (HTc) SQUID microscope. The FGMs were either fabricated by inhomogeneous mechanical deformation or by heat treatment in a temperature gradient. The magnetic properties of these materials were measured using the vibrating sample magnetometer technique along the deformation or the temperature gradients. The results from this technique and the microstructural properties from optical imaging are discussed in conjunction with the magnetic field images obtained from the SQUID microscope. By exploring the results, the feasibility and benefit of utilizing SQUID microscopy as a NDE tool are discussed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Phase transitions and microwave dielectric properties in the (1−x)Ca(Al0.5Nb0.5)O3–xCaTiO3 system were analyzed using x-ray and neutron powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and dielectric measurements at microwave frequencies (2–8 GHz). Rietveld structural refinements demonstrated that both end compounds exhibit similar octahedral tilted frameworks, while in Ca(Al0.5Nb0.5)O3, tilting is superimposed onto NaCl-type ordering of Al and Nb on the B sites. Accordingly, the room-temperature structures of CaTiO3 and Ca(Al0.5Nb0.5)O3 are described by orthorhombic Pbnm and monoclinic P21/n symmetries, respectively, with similar lattice parameters, (square root of)2ac×(square root of)2ac×2ac (where ac is the lattice parameter of cubic perovskite). The (1−x)Ca(Al0.5Nb0.5)O3–xCaTiO3 system features both cation ordering and octahedral tilting phase transitions. The Ca(Al0.5Nb0.5)O3 structure remains ordered at least up to 1625 °C. However, the temperature of the order/disorder transition decreases rapidly with increasing Ti content, which correlates with a progressive increase of cation disorder in the specimens. A disordered structure is attained at x=0.5. For the "solid solutions," the nonlinear dependence of both permittivity ε and the temperature coefficient of the resonant frequency τf on Ti content corresponds to a linear dependence of the macroscopic polarizability on composition; that is, the oxide additivity rule was closely obeyed. Therefore, this rule can be used to predict ε and τf for any intermediate composition from the permittivities and temperature coefficients of permittivity of the end compounds. A zero temperature coefficient of the resonant frequency occurs at the composition x(approximate)0.5 with a relative permittivity of 50 and a Qf value of approximately 30 000 GHz (@4 GHz). © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The Raman noncoincidence effect and line width of the symmetric C(large-closed-square)O stretching band have been measured in liquid propylene carbonate (PC), chloroethylene carbonate (CC), and dichloroethylene carbonate (DC) as a function of pressure up to 3 kbar and over the temperature range from −20 °C to 40 °C. The transition dipole moments of the C(large-closed-square)O mode for these liquids have also been determined by means of infrared spectroscopy at ambient conditions. The temperature, density, and transition dipole moment dependences of the experimental noncoincidence effect for these liquids are quantitatively interpreted in terms of Logan theory. An excellent agreement between the experimental results and theoretical predictions indicates that the observed noncoincidence effect is due to the transition dipole moment coupling and permanent dipole moment coupling. For the study of isotropic bandwidths, the band narrowing with increasing density is found for liquid CC and DC and quantitatively explained by means of intermolecular interactions, whereas band broadening is observed for PC. The latter broadening is unexpected since PC possesses the largest permanent dipole moment of these three liquids. A probable reason for difficulty in the interpretation of this result is given.

    Notes: In this letter, we report the results of ion implantation of GaN using 28Si and 24Mg species. Structural and electrical characterizations of the GaN thin films after thermal annealing show that native defects in the GaN films dominate over implant doping effects. The formation energies of the annealing induced defects are estimated to range from 1.4 to 3.6 eV. A 40 keV 1014 cm−2 Mg implant results in the decrease of the free-carrier concentration by three orders of magnitude compared to unimplanted GaN up to an annealing temperature of 690 °C. Furthermore, we have observed the correlation between these annealing-induced defects to both improved optical and electrical properties. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Gallium nitride is one of the most promising materials for ultraviolet and blue light-emitting diodes and lasers. The principal technical problem that limits device applications has been achieving controllable p-type doping. Molecular beam epitaxy assisted by a nitrogen ion beam produced p-type GaN when doped via ion implantation, diffusion, or coevaporation of Mg. Nearly intrinsic p-type material was also produced without intentional doping, exhibiting hole carrier concentrations of 5×1011 cm−3 and hole mobilities of over 400 cm2/V/s at 250 K. This value for the hole mobility is an order of magnitude greater than previously reported.

    Notes: Background : Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is an important cause of chronic hepatitis and cryptogenic cirrhosis. The natural history of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is not well understood especially in Asian populations.Aim : To investigate the histological progression in Chinese patients with biopsy-proven non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.Methods : Chinese patients who had liver biopsy at least 3 years ago and confirmed to have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease were invited for a second liver biopsy. Clinical and laboratory parameters related to their liver function and metabolic syndrome were recorded and analysed. Liver biopsies were scored for the degree of steatosis, necroinflammation and fibrosis. Correlation coefficients were calculated to assess the association between changes in histological scores and metabolic parameters.Results : Seventeen patients who had been followed up for a median period of 6.1 (range: 3.8–8.0) years underwent a second liver biopsy. Nine (53%) patients had progressive disease with worsening of fibrosis score. No statistically significant correlation was found between the changes in histological scores and metabolic parameters. Seven patients developed hypertension or diabetes mellitus during the period of follow-up.Conclusions : Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is a progressive disease in Chinese patients as in their Caucasian counterparts. Diagnosis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease may predate development of new components of metabolic syndrome.

    Notes: This report describes two cases of alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of the nasal cavity with unusual histological appearances mimicking clear cell carcinoma. The closely packed tumour cells were polygonal and arranged in sheets and packets. They had an appreciable amount of clear cytoplasm due to accumulation of glycogen. The diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma was confirmed by positive staining for desmin and myoglobin. Rhabdomyosarcoma should be included in the differential diagnosis of nasal clear cell tumours, particularly in young adults. A correct diagnosis is important, because chemotherapy is indicated even for apparently localized disease.
