    Notes: Abstract Serum creatinine, uric acid, and hypoxanthine and xanthine concentrations were determined in 17 mother-infant pairs at the time of delivery. Creatinine and uric acid levels were nearly similar, but hypoxanthine and xanthine were more than twice as high in the blood of the infants than in the blood of their mothers. In the same newborns the urinary excretion of creatinine, uric acid, hypoxanthine and xanthine, uracil, cAMP, and cGMP was measured on the first and fourth day of life. Creatinine, uracil, and cAMP increased, hypoxanthine and xanthine, and cGMP decreased, whereas the output of uric acid was nearly the same on both days. Correlations of the excreted substances to each other were calculated.

    Notes: Abstract This is apparently the first report on connatal hemihypertrophy with malignant pheochromocytoma. The coincidence of hemihypertrophy with other diseases, particularly neuroectodermal dysplasias on the one hand and the frequent association of neuroectodermal dysplasias with pheochromocytoma on the other, are emphasized. Furthermore, basically known particularities of this case as malignancy of the tumor, the unusual size of the tumor in children, and the normal catecholamine levels in serum as well as the normal excretion of vanillylmandelic acid are discussed.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 136 (12,2%) von 1115 während der Jahre 1957–1976 verstorbenen Neugeborenen zeigten makroskopisch sichtbare Harnsäureinfarkte. Ihr Vorkommen hängt vom Alter der Kinder und von der Flüssigkeitszufuhr während der ersten Lebenstage ab. Nach Einführung der parenteralen Alkali-Glukoseinfusion in die Therapie atemgestörter Neugeborener sank die Häufigkeit der Harnsäureinfarkte von vorher 19,3% auf 〈1% ab. Oxypurin-analysen in den Harnsäureinfarkten von 3 Neugeborenen ergaben einen Hypoxyanthinanteil von 31,1, 21,8 bzw. 11.0%. Hypoxanthinwerte von 〉15% sprechen für eine vorangegangene chronische Hypoxie.
    Notes: Abstract Among 1115 newborns who died during 1957–1976, 136 (12.2%) showed macroscopic renal uric acid infarctions. The incidence depended on the age of the infants and their fluid supply during the first days of life. After introduction of parenteral alkali-glucose infusion in the treatment of perinatal complications, the incidence of renal uric acid infarctions decreased from 19.3% to less than 1.0%. Analysis of the oxypurines in the renal uric acid infarctions of three newborns revealed high percentages of hypoxanthine (31.1%, 21.8% and 11.0%) along with the uric acid. Hypoxanthine ratios above 15% retrospectively point to chronic hypoxia of the newborn.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Tuberkulosesterbefälle sind entsprechend den schlechten Wohnungsverhältnissen in den meisten Wohnungen vorgekommen. Es kamen seit dem Jahre 1852 in 285 Wohnungen Sterbefälle an Tuberkulose vor, während nur 89 Wohnungen frei von Tuberkulose blieben. — In einzelnen Wohnungen häufen sich die Tuberkulosefälle ganz besonders, auf allein 15% der Wohnungen kommen 36,4% sämtlicher Tuberkulosefälle. — In diesen Tuberkulosewohnungen sind 39% der an Tuberkulose gestorbenen Kinder gestorben, deren Eltern nicht au Tuberkulose gestorben sind. — In 48,9%, also nahezu der Hälfte dieser Wohnungen, kamen auch in den letzten 10 Jahren Sterbefälle an Tuberkulose vor. In den Einzimmerwohnungen kamen fast doppelt so häufig Tuberkulosefälle vor als in den geräumigeren Wohnungen. Bei den Tuberkulosewohnungen fällt bei einem Vergleich mit den tuberkulosefreien Wohnungen der Mangel eines Schlafraumes auf. Es ist anzunehmen, dass die wiederholte Infektion, die besonders von den an Tuberkulose schwer Erkrankten ausgeht, das Manifestwerden der Tuberkulose begünstigt. — In dem durch Mangel von Luft und Licht geschwächten Körper findet die Infektion günstigeren Boden. Die Isolierung der Schwerkranken wird in den raumbeschränkten Wohnungen gänzlich unmöglich. Eine Besserung der Wohnungsverhältnisse ist bei dem Kampfe gegen die Tuberkulose als Volkskrankheit anzustreben, da nicht nur die Möglichkeit einer gesunden Lebensführung dadurch geschaffen wird, die Bewohner zur Reinlichkeit erzogen werden, sondern auch wirtschaftliche Vorteile mit der gesunden Wohnung verbunden sind, die ebenfalls wieder einer Verbreitung der Tuberkulose entgegenwirken.
