Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary The salivary excretion of sulphonamides was investigated. The concentration of sulphanilamide, sulphacetamide, sulphacarbamide, sulphadiazine, and sulphaethidole in the human saliva was found to be lower than or equal to the concentration in the ultrafiltrate of plasma. The concentration in the slightly acidic saliva depended mainly on the pKa-value of the drug. Drugs which had high degrees of dissociation in the blood were excreted at very low concentrations. — Sulphacetamide was metabolized into sulphanilamide. — There is a strong relationship between the levels of a drug in the blood and in the saliva. Therefore, it seems possible to estimate drug concentrations in the ultrafiltrate of plasma by measuring the salivary drug concentrations.
