Notes: Summary Several new genitourinaryBacteroides species and the newMobiluncus/Falcivibrio have been described since 1977. The normal vaginal flora consists mainly of lactobacilli and other “non-pathogenic” aerobes and anaerobes. Under unknown circumstances, organisms may increase in number, displacing the normal lactobacillus flora and raising the vaginal pH. This renders a more favourable biotope for organisms with a pH optimum in the neutral or alkaline range. Overgrowth ofGardnerella, Bacteroides, B-streptococci andMobilunscus/Falcivibrio is indicative of vaginosis, which is not a typical sexual disease, but may be sexually transmitted. Proper treatment includes the male partner. No overall-valid therapy exists, but metronidazole is the drug of choice ifBacteroides orGardnerella form the disturbed flora, and beta-lactams are the drugs of choice whenMobiluncus or aerobes are involved.

Notes: Summary Gas-liquid chromatographic analysis of metabolic products and conventional biochemical tests are actually used for the identification of clinical isolates of anaerobes. As the majority of bacteremic and other life-threatening anaerobic infections are caused byBacteroides fragilis, the prompt and accurate identification of this highly resistant species is essential for effective treatment. The clinical significance of the identification of the otherBacteroidaceae species andPeptococcaceae is discussed.

Notes: Summary The frequency of gram-negative non-sporing anaerobes with possible clinical significance was studied in healthy pregnant women and in patients with non-Candida vaginitis. Only 4% of the healthy pregnant women studied yielded anaerobes of the familyBacteroidaceae. However, the incidence ofBacteroidaceae in 58 patients with colpitis was 53.5%. The predominant anaerobic species wasBacteroides oralis.

Notes: Abstract The isolation of aLeptotrichia buccalis-like bacterium from the blood of a patient with endocarditis associated with a prosthetic aortic valve is reported. The organism was isolated from different blood cultures. It was similar but not completely identical toLeptotrichia buccalis. The microbiological identification was confirmed independently by three laboratories, including two reference institutions. The case and the characteristics of the microorganism are reported.

Notes: Abstract A recurrent infection of the left cervical area dorsal to the sternocleidomastoid muscle with actinomycosis in a 6-year-old girl is presented. Several antibiotic regimens failed, and repeated surgical treatments were necessary. The existence of a lateral cervical cyst and subsequent infection with agents of actinomycosis may have been the route of infection in this case.
