Notes: The quadratic hyperpolarizability tensor of 4-amino-4'-nitrodiphenyl sulfide has been sampled by measurement of the z component of its vector part, when z is the permanent dipole direction. This was also accomplished for the oxygen, selenium, and tellurium analogues. It was found that large differences in their frequency-doubling efficiency as powdered solids are not reflected in this molecular property. The sulfur, selenium and tellurium ethers have about the same hyperpolarizabilities while that of the oxygen member is somewhat lower.

Notes: The upconversion emission intensities of Er3+ ion around 550 and 660 nm in fluorozirconate glasses were measured under 800 nm excitation. Though energy transfer processes played an important role in upconversion mechanism at high concentration of ErF3, those have not been treated quantitatively. The energy transfer rates were calculated from the optical parameters assuming some distribution of Er3+ ions. We calculated the upconversion intensities around 550 and 660 nm by using rate equations. It was found that the dependence of upconversion emission intensities on the ErF3 concentration could be reproducible and the principal upconversion mechanism could be evaluated. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Pressure measurements made by an ac bridge technique with a precision of 0.001 ppm in magnetic fields at low temperatures using a Straty–Adams type gauge are described. In order to improve the sensitivity and the long-term stability of the bridge system, coaxial cables without dielectric insulator were developed, with a small cable capacitance temperature coefficient of the impedance. This pressure measurement system has a sensitivity of dP/P∼5×10−10 and a long-term stability of dP/P∼2.4×10−9 over 18 h. This is especially useful for measurements such as electric and magnetic susceptibility measurements in magnetic fields at low temperatures requiring a high precision.

Notes: Background  Stratum corneum lipids, particularly ceramides, are important components of the epidermal permeability barrier that are decreased in atopic dermatitis and aged skin. Objectives We investigated the effects of nicotinamide, one of the B vitamins, on biosynthesis of sphingolipids, including ceramides and other stratum corneum lipids, in cultured normal human keratinocytes, and on the epidermal permeability barrier in vivo. Methods The rate of sphingolipid biosynthesis was measured by the incorporation of [14C]-serine into sphingolipids. Results When the cells were incubated with 1–30 μmol L−1 nicotinamide for 6 days, the rate of ceramide biosynthesis was increased dose-dependently by 4·1–5·5-fold on the sixth day compared with control. Nicotinamide also increased the synthesis of glucosylceramide (7·4-fold) and sphingomyelin (3·1-fold) in the same concentration range effective for ceramide synthesis. Furthermore, the activity of serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT), the rate-limiting enzyme in sphingolipid synthesis, was increased in nicotinamide-treated cells. Nicotinamide increased the levels of human LCB1 and LCB2 mRNA, both of which encode subunits of SPT. This suggested that the increase in SPT activity was due to an increase in SPT mRNA. Nicotinamide increased not only ceramide synthesis but also free fatty acid (2·3-fold) and cholesterol synthesis (1·5-fold). Topical application of nicotinamide increased ceramide and free fatty acid levels in the stratum corneum, and decreased transepidermal water loss in dry skin. Conclusions Nicotinamide improved the permeability barrier by stimulating de novo synthesis of ceramides, with upregulation of SPT and other intercellular lipids.

Notes: Charged particles in organic polymer plumes photoablated by ultraviolet lasers are measured with a Faraday cup assembly. In spite of a relatively low F2 laser (157 nm) fluence 〈1 J/cm2, relative charged fragment concentrations measured for polyimide, polytetrafluoroethylene, and polyethyleneterephthalate targets are (approximately-greater-than)10−3. Charged particle concentrations in the ablation plumes generated by an F2 laser with polyethyleneterephthalate and polyimide targets are always higher than those in KrF laser (248 nm) ablation plumes at the same specific laser energy deposited on the target. Charged fragments have also higher velocities in the F2 laser ablation plumes. An exponential increase in the charged fragment concentration with increasing laser fluence suggests that the ions are mainly produced through electron-neutral collisions in the hot material core close to the target surface. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Er3+ singly- and Er3+/Yb3+-codoped fluorozirconate glasses were prepared. The upconversion emission intensities of the Er3+ ion around both 550 and 660 nm were measured under 800 nm excitation. The absorption band of the Yb3+ ion is located around 980 nm. Though the absorption band of Yb3+ does not interact directly with the incident light at 800 nm, both upconversion intensities around 550 and 660 nm emission increased with the increasing YbF3 concentration. We calculated the upconversion intensities around 550 and 660 nm by using rate equations and evaluated the principal upconversion mechanism in Er3+ singly- and Er3+/Yb3+-codoped samples quantitatively. We also investigated the reason for the increase of the upconversion emission intensities with the codoping of Yb3+ under 800 nm excitation. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: It was found from electrical measurements at 4.2 K that good thermal contact between different kinds of metals can be obtained much more effectively by fastening two pieces with a screw of a large diameter rather than by welding. The thermal conduction of a threaded joint between silver and platinum has been achieved equal to that of copper-to-copper joints.
