The procedure previously described of investigating the regional distribution of cations in the human brain has been improved and simplified. Any chemical pretreatment of the brain matter has been dispensed with. Sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron copper and phosphorus (as phosphate) are determined quantitatively in stock solutions prepared from each brain centre. Representative data have been tabulated, thus making possible a comparison of the ions estimated in different centres ofone brain.

Notes: Summary Parkinsonian patients with orthostatic hypotension and dizziness due to usual antiparkinson therapy have been treated with the precursor ammoacid of noradrenaline, DL-3,4-threo-dihydroxyphenylserine (DL-3,4-threo-DOPS). Oral and intravenous administration improved these side effects significantly. A combined treatment of L-dopa, peripheral decarboxylase inhibitor and DL-3,4-threo-DOPS seems to be of benefit with respect to akinesia and orthostatic hypotension.

Notes: Summary 59 patients with SAH and an aneurysm were investigated by CT and angiography. In the 59 patients 67 aneurysms were found. The mean interval between SAH and CT was 8 days, between SAH and angiography 11 days. Blood in the CSF space was visualized up to the 9th day in the patients and 67% of those investigated showed blood in the CSF-space in the CT. In 31% of the patients an aneurysm, in 29% an intracerebral haemorrhage and in 19% a recent infarct was found. A hydrocephalus was seen in 13% of the patients. Of 12 patients with recent infarcts 8 showed vasospasm which correlated in time and location with the infarct.

Notes: Summary Results from neuropsychological tests, collected under double-blind-precautions, were evaluated for 115 schoolage children (mean age: 9.4 years) living in a lead smelter area (Stolberg, FRG). Tooth-lead concentrations (PbT) from shed incisor teeth as measures of longtime lead-exposure were available for these children (x = 6.16 ppm; range: 1.9–38.5 ppm), and for 83 of them blood-lead concentrations (PbB) were available as well (x = 14.3 μg/dl; range: 6.8-33.8 μg/dl). The following functional capacities were tested: intelligence (German WISC), perceptual-motor integration (Göttinger Formreproduktionstest = GFT, Diagnosticum for Cerebralschüdigung = DCS), reaction performance (Wiener Determinationsgerät), finger-wrist tapping-speed, and repetitive cancellation-performance (Differentieller Leistungstest). In addition standardized behavior ratings were obtained by the examiners, the mothers, and the teachers. Multiple stepwise regression-analysis (forced solution) was calculated for outcome-variables and Pb-tooth, including age, sex, duration of labor, and socio-hereditary background as covariates. Significant (P〈 0.05) or near-significant (P〈 0.1) association was established between Pb-tooth and GFT-performance (errors), reaction-performance (false reactions), and four behavioral dimensions as rated by the mothers, namely distractability, restlessness, lack of information, and wasting of time; the proportion of explained variance never exceeded 6%, however, No significant association was found between PbT and WISC verbal-IQ after the effects of “socio-hereditary background” had been eliminated, although there was still a tendency for high level-children (PbT 〉 10 ppm) to be inferior to low level-children (PbT ≦ 4 ppm) by 4.6 IQ-points after correction for confounding. There was a near-significant, inverse relationship between fingerwrist tapping-speed and Pb-blood. The results are discussed within the framework of attention-deficit disorder, and compared to neurobehavioral Pb-effects from animal-experiments, which provide suggestive evidence for a causal relationship between developmental lead-exposure and certain neurobehavioral deficits.

Notes: Summary The EEG of the cortex and the hippocampus has been recorded in rabbits after injection of substance P into the carotis artery. 30 to 100 units of substance P evoced the following effects: 1. The cortical activity showed a decrease in amplitude and an increase in frequency, most pronounced 1–2 min after the injection. 2. The hippocampus activity showed an increase in frequency synchronisation of the previously irregular basic pattern. These changes of electrical activity suggest an influence of substance P on activatingsystems.

Notes: Summary The influence of Tinofedrine (0.12–0.17 mg/kg body-weight) on fibrinogen and platelet aggregation has been investigated in 45 patients (mean age 65 years) with recent cerebral infarction. Depending on the duration of medication a significant decrease of the fibrinogen level as well as of enhanced platelet aggregation has been observed. It is concluded from the present results that the decrease of enhanced platelet aggregation may be mediated by the fall of fibrinogen.
