    Notes: Wxa and Wxb are the most common alleles of the Wx gene in Asian cultivated rice. The difference between them is responsible for differences in the levels of the Wx gene product in the endosperm, as well as in amylose content, which is an important determinant of the quality of edible rice. Since Indica rice mostly carries the Wxa allele, we introduced the Wxb allele into Indica-type rice (IR36) from a Japonica-type rice (T65) by repeated backcrossing. In the near-isogenic line (IR36 Wxb), the level of the Wx gene product was reduced and, as expected, the level of amylose. However, IR36Wxb had a lower amylose content than the recurrent parent of T65 with the Wxb allele. The results suggest that the Indica (IR36) background might lower the amylose content more than the Japonica (T65) background when the Wx allele is the same. The possible importance of modifiers that regulate expression of the Wx gene is also discussed in relation to improvements in the grain quality of rice.

    Notes: Abstract A peanut is a commonly inhaled foreign body during childhood. Some cases are difficult to diagnose especially in cases without a clear history of inhalation. We describe a 16-month-old boy presenting with stridor and fever. The chest x-ray suggested inhalation of a foreign body but there was no history of this. A high spot on a T1-weighted chest MRI was due to a peanut which was seen to have moved from the right main bronchus to the left inferior bronchus, between the two MRi studies. MRI can provide information on position and size of the peanut, the conditions of the surrounding tissues and may be also useful in treatment. We consider MRI to be a valuable new method for the diagnosis of peanut inhalation.

    Notes: Abstract  Fatigue is one of the most frequent symptoms in cancer patients. However, the precise causes of this fatigue are still unknown, and this situation makes it difficult to combat the problem. The present study was conducted to investigate factors correlated with fatigue in disease-free breast cancer patients. A group of 134 randomly selected ambulatory breast cancer patients who had undergone successful surgical treatment participated. They completed the Cancer Fatigue Scale, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Mental Adjustment to Cancer Scale, and an ad hoc questionnaire detailing physical symptoms, social support, and demographic variables at home and returned them by mail the following day. Multiple regression analysis revealed that fatigue was significantly correlated with dyspnea, insufficient sleep, and depression, and that these three variables accounted for a total of 46% of variance in fatigue. Factors concerned with the cancer and treatment, such as disease stage, lymph node metastasis, number of days since operation, past intravenous chemotherapy, radiotherapy, current use of fluoropyrimidine compounds, and current use of tamoxifen citrate were not correlated with fatigue. The results suggest that fatigue in this population is determined by current physical and psychological distress rather than by the cancer itself and prior cancer treatments, and that the management of dyspnea, insomnia, and depression might be important in reducing fatigue in this population.

    Notes: Abstract In recent years, it has become increasingly clear that the dome is often itself a major source of seeing degradation, due to its adverse thermal properties. In order to enable the Japanese National Large Telescope (JNLT) to attain the highest image quality as a ground-based telescope, 0.1″ r.m.s. on 80% light energy diameter basis is budgeted to the dome-induced seeing degradation as a design goal. Feasibility of this goal has been studied, using the latest design concept of the dome, in the following manner. - Model the JNLT dome on the latest design plan for dynamic thermal analysis. - Perform the dynamic thermal analysis to attain temperature distribution in the dome. - Predict the seeing degradation induced by the dome using the thermal analysis result. Although this study is just on an elementary level, the result indicates that our design goal is attainable on an extension of the current design concept and the dome cooling by thermal emission is a key factor we have to overcome to minimize the dome-induced seeing degradation.
