Notes: Abstract The age-related changes in the density of alpha1-adrenoceptors in the dorsolateral lobe of the rat prostate were evaluated in Wistar rats at 8, 52, and 104 weeks of age. [3H]YM617, a newly senthesized alpha1-adrenergic blocker, was used as the ligand. The mean maximum number of binding sites, or alpha1-adrenoceptor density (Bmax)±SE of 104-week-old rats (11.0±1.2 fmol/mg protein) was significantly lower than that in the 8-week-old rats (37.0±4.3 fmol/mg protein) and 52-week-old rats (37.2±3.4 fmol/mg protein) respectively, P〈0.01. In contrast, mean affinity (Kd) values±SE of these groups showed no significant differences (8-week-old rats, 115.8±9.1; 52-week-old rats, 100.5±5.8; and 104-week-old rats, 116.4±9.8 pM). Mean volumes±SE of muscle cells of the prostate were 3.7±1.1x103 μm3 at 8 weeks, 30.0±6.2x103 μm3 at 52 weeks, and 18.6±8.2x103 μm3 at 104 weeks. Volumes for 8-week-old rats were significantly smaller than those for 52-week-old (P〈0.01) and 104-week-old rats (P〈0.05). However, the mean area density of the muscle cells showed no difference among the three groups: 20.1±2.2% at 8 weeks, 27.3±2.9% at 52 weeks and 20.3±3.4% at 104 weeks. In conclusion, the density of YM617-binding sites (alpha1-adrenoceptors) in 104-week-old rats was lower than in 8- and 52-week-old rats. Muscle volume in the rat prostate was larger in rats aged 52 and 104 weeks than in 8-week-old rats, but no correlation was found between alpha1-adrenoceptor density and the muscle volume or muscle density in aging.

Notes: Abstract The evaluation of strength of ceramics is an important problem in their application to engineering components. Although fracture initiating from inherent flaws in ceramics is supposed to be analyzed through linear elastic fracture mechanics, the applicability of a plane-strain fracture toughness criterion is in dispute. In this investigation, fracture tests for two grades of sintered silicon nitride were conducted under plane-bending and ring-compression. As the size of inherent flaw observed at the fracture origin was larger, the critical stress intensity factor for the flaw increased and then almost coincided with the fracture toughness. This suggests that ordinary fracture mechanics data should not always be applied directly for predicting the strength of engineering ceramic components. The flaw-size effect was discussed from the point of the applicability of fracture mechanics and the relation with material microstructure.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the surface roughening phenomenon of an aluminum foil during fatigue process is utilized for monitoring of a variable amplitude stress. It is found that constant mean stress does not affect surface roughness. When the mean stress varies, however, it causes surface roughening. In such a case, the equivalent stress defined by (Σσ i α N i /ΣN i )1/α dominates surface roughness of an aluminum foil, where σ i andN i are stress amplitude and the number of cycles counted by the rangepair method, respectively, and α is a gage factor which is peculiar to the foil used. It is concluded that the aluminum foil can be used as the range-pair counting fatigue gage with high accuracy.

Notes: Abstract Fundamental experiments are carried out to examine the parameter that dominates the slip-band initiation in electroplated copper foil under the condition where the mean stress as well as the stress amplitude varies. In the case of constant-amplitude stressing, the relation between the critical stress for the slip-band initiation σ p and the number of cyclesN is well represented by σ p α N=C. In other words, the slip bands appear when the total hysteresis energy applied to the copper foil attains a critical value. In the case of variable stresses, the range-pair mainly dominates the occurrence of the slip bands, and Miner's linear cumulative damage rule holds for the accumulation of the fatigue damage for the slip-band initiation. Accordingly, the parameter (Σσ i α n i/Σn i)1/α is equivalent to the critical stress σ p under constant amplitude stressing, where σ i andn i are the stress amplitude and the number of cycles counted by the range-pair method, respectively, and α is the exponent of the σ p -N relation. Based on these results, the applicability of the copper foil to the fatigue gage that accumulates and indicates a load experience is discussed.
