Notes: Apoptosis and the expression of p53 protein, an apoptosis-related protein, in the process of healing of a full-thickness burn wound in guinea-pig skin were studied with the terminal deoxynucleotide transferase nick-end labelling method, electron microscopy, and immunohistochemistry, respectively. Apoptosis was detected in the peripheral zone of heat-injured skin from 12 h until day 10 after the burn, with the peak occurring on day 2. The peripheral zone of heat-injured skin showed p53 protein from 12 h through day 2, with the peak occurring on day 2. Apoptosis was also detected in tissues regenerated for covering skin defects. The peak of apoptosis in the regenerated epidermis occurred at days 7–10, when the epidermis was most acanthotic. p53 protein reactivity was also detected in the acanthotic regenerated epidermis, with a peak on day 7. The peak of apoptosis in the granulation and scar tissue took place from day 10 to 14, when the granulation tissue started diminishing, but p53 protein reactivity was not detected there. These findings suggest that apoptosis plays an important part in the elimination of dying and/or dead cells resulting from heat stress, the terminal differentiation of the regenerated epidermis, and the decrease in cellularity during remodelling. The apoptotic process during remodelling may be mediated by some p53-independent pathway.

Notes: We report a 59-year-old woman who exhibited a recurrent malignant proliferating trichilemmal tumour on the scalp for 15 years. The tumour was recalcitrant to conventional treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation or hyperthermia and we performed intratumoral ethanol injection as an alternative means of reducing tumour mass and obtaining haemostasis. Biopsy specimens obtained after the ethanol injection revealed oedema, haemorrhage in the dermis and degeneration of the tumour cells, showing vacuolization with pyknotic nuclei. For cases of recurrent skin tumours and for patients in poor clinical condition, intratumoral ethanol injection is likely to be a therapeutic alternative to surgery or other conventional treatments.

Notes: This has been accomplished in the past using four/five separate electrode- and diffusion-barrier layers. In this letter, we report a novel Pt–Rh–Ox/Pt–Rh/Pt–Rh–Ox electrode-barrier structure which acts as an electrode as well as a diffusion barrier for integration of the ferroelectric capacitors directly onto silicon deposited using an in situ reactive rf sputtering process. The electrodes have a smooth and fine grained microstructure and are excellent diffusion barriers between the PbZr0.53Ti0.47O3 (PZT) and Si substrate and exhibit good thermal stability up to very high processing temperatures of 700 °C. The ferroelectric (PZT) test capacitors using these electrode barriers grown directly on Si, show well saturated hysteresis loops with Pr and Ec of 16 μC/cm2 and 30–40 kV/cm, respectively. The capacitors exhibit no significant fatigue loss (〈5%) up to 1011 cycles and have low leakage currents (2×10−8 A/cm2 at 100 kV/cm). These electrode barriers can be used to directly integrate the thin film capacitors on the source/drain of the transistors of the memory cell structure for accomplishing large scale integration.© 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: 1. The effects of ajmaline, cocaine, phenytoin, lignocaine, procainamide, propranolol, quinidine and trimetazidine on the contractility and the refractory period of isolated rat papillary muscles were compared.2. At the higher concentrations used, all drugs suppressed the contractile tension of the rat papillary muscles.3. The effects of these drugs on the refractory period were compared at concentrations at which the contractile tension was suppressed by 30% of the control. At this point, lignocaine, procainamide, ajmaline and quinidine prolonged the refractory period more than two-fold while the effects of propranolol and phenytoin were slight, cocaine and trimetazidine had little or no effect.

Notes: Magnetic compression of S-1 spheromak plasmas [Nucl. Fusion 22, 1407 (1982)] was performed to extend the investigation of confinement properties of the spheromak to plasmas with larger current density and higher plasma pressure than obtained before. Evolution of the magnetic configuration was mapped using internal-probe-based flux plots, and it was found that the plasma compression was approximately self-similar. The Taylor equilibrium state was maintained without flux conversion or relaxation phenomena. With a compression factor of up to 1.6, a significant increase of plasma pressure was observed. The peak electron temperature rose from approximately 40 eV before compression to about 100 eV, and the peak density increased somewhat less than the adiabaticity based scaling, which suggests the presence of an enhanced particle loss mechanism. In general, the electron's beta value was approximately constant during the compression; that is, ne0Te0∝B20. This result is consistent with the S-1 scaling obtained earlier without compression. The ion temperature measured by Doppler broadening of low Z impurity line radiation was observed to rise as high as 0.5 keV.

Notes: We report a dog with dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa. This 4-year-old female Akita Inu, a species of Canis familiaris var. japanicus Temminck, had a 3-year-history of ulcers and scars over the pressure areas on the limbs, and dystrophic nails, since the age of 1 year, which corresponds lo early adulthood in humans. Electron microscopy of a blister revealed separation beneath the lamina densa, and a reduction in the number of anchoring fibrils. The NC-1 domain of type VII collagen was positively stained with monoclonal anlibody LH7.2 at the basement membrane zone. These findings indicate that humans and dogs have a similar response to antibody LH7.2, which may aid the development of an animal model for this disease.

Notes: The day and night pattern of upstream and downstream dispersal of masu salmon fry of wild and domestic origin was compared in artificial channels (45 m long), for two ages of planting: unfed alevins and eyed eggs. Early dispersal was important for the wild stock (48–50%) compared with the domestic one (16–36%). More wild fry moved downstream than upstream, and more domestic fry dispersed upstream. Upstream movement in wild and domestic fry was more active by day than by night, except for wild fry planted as eyed eggs, where upstream migration was higher at night. In contrast, downstream movement in wild and domestic fry was more common by night than by day, but daylight catches were not negligible for the wild stock.

Notes: Behavioural experiments using artificial and natural stream channels were undertaken to determine whether there were differences in dispersal between newly emerged male and female masu salmon. Eyed eggs from a cross with wild spawners were planted in the middle pool of an artificial channel. After emergence, more males than females moved into an upstream trap, while fewer males moved downstream. In a natural stream, eyed eggs were marked with alizarin complexone to distinguish them from naturally spawned eggs and these were planted into artificial redds. More newly emerged male fry remained at the planted site than female fry. In contrast, more females moved downstream than males. These results imply that differences in dispersal patterns between male and female masu salmon fry are genetically controlled.

Notes: Smolts of anadromous masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou aged 3+ years were found in a northern Japanese river. This is the first recording of 3+ year smolts in Japan. These fish appeared to originate in the cold upper river where 2+ year parr were found during autumn.

Notes: This report presents a rare malignant endothelial neoplasm which arose at the site of a pre-existing lymphangioma. The lymphangioma was located on the right buccal miicosa, and the malignant neoplasm arose 17 years after irradiation of the initial tumor. Clinical, light microscopic and immunohistochcmical (Factor VIII-related antigen and Ulex europueus Agglutinin-1) studies were made, together with observations by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. These studies provide evidence that this malignant neoplasm was well-differentiated and had not yet lost the characteristics of normal lymphatic cells.
