Notes: Abstract Although the participants in the various microsurgical courses were of varied backgrounds and experience, and published materials that can serve as an adequate text are limited, the principles of microsurgery can be learned by skilled surgeons determined to become microsurgeons. Fundamental training depends upon the proper text and suitable models for practice under the guidance of a properly trained microsurgeon instructor. In particular, audiovisual aids are of substantial value. Techniques from the fundamental, simple vascular anastomosis to highly sophisticated organ transplantation in rodents may be mastered in a course of several days' duration. A 7- to 10-day course should be repeated annually to enable participants to polish their skills. Further, during an annual course, a half to whole day can be set aside for a microsurgical scientific program to allow exchange of scientific and clinical information, and to stimulate junior participants.

Notes: Summary In spite of almost totally inhibited growth, the epiphyseal cartilage of thiouracil-treated rats revealed practically normal micromorphology at the end of the 8-week experimental period. Deposition of administered radio-sulphate in cells and matrix of epiphyseal and joint cartilages was reduced indicating decreased chondroitin-sulphate turnover. Alkaline phosphatase activity was appreciably increased, in the resting cartilage layer of the epiphyseal growth zone; increased amounts of PAS-positive material appear in the epiphyseal cartilage. Both enchondral and appositional growth were delayed by thiouracil. The bone resorption was approximately on a level with the decreased formation of new bone, which explained the relatively normal histological appearance.

Notes: Summary Intrinsic hepatic glycogenolysis was examined after hypovolemic stress. Hemorrhagic hypotension of 70 (P70) and 40 mm Hg (P40) for 60 min was inflicted for two postprandial groups and of 70 mm Hg (S70) in a 24-h starved group. The results were compared with three control groups; one postprandial (Pc), one 24-h starved (Sc), and one starved for 9 h (Sc: 9) to mimic the glycogen depletion produced by 70 mm Hg hemorrhagic hypotension. Glucose output was studied in vitro using av recirculating isolated liver perfusion system with a perfusate free of glucose and endocrine stimulation. Liver glycogen determination was made before perfusion start. Although the glycogen stores were decreased after hemorrhage glucose yield was increased (P70) and unchanged (P40) as compared to controls (Pc and Sc: 9). Both starved groups delivered small amounts of glucose, but the released fraction of the S70 group was more than twice that from the Sc group. These data suggest a liver enzyme activation with increased velocity of the enzymesubstrate reactions responsible for glycogen degradation, induced during in vivo hemorrhage and persisting for at least 30 min in vitro perfusion.

Notes: Abstract The function of the pharyngoesophageal stage of deglutition was studied by cineradiography in 45 patients with an acute onset of dysphagia. None of the patients had any radiographically detectable foreign body in the pharynx or esophagus. In 34 of the patients (76%) a functional or morphodynamic abnormality was disclosed; a defective closure of the laryngeal vestibule (26 patients), defective movements of the epiglottis (18 patients), uncoordinated relaxation of the cricopharyngeal muscle (14 patients), paresis of pharyngeal constrictor muscles (9 patients), and cervical webs (9 patients). In 21 of the patients more than 1 type of dysfunction was present. The results of this study suggest that cineradiography of the pharyngoesophageal stage of deglutition is useful in patients with acute dysphagia, without a foreign body, as functional abnormalities often can explain the patients' complaints.
