    Ultrasonography for diagnosis of rotator cuff tear (1996)

    Notes: Abstract  In this study the clinical usefulness of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of rotator cuff tears was assessed. One hundred twenty-two patients undergoing preoperative ultrasonography were evaluated surgically. Three different ultrasonographic machines were applied with a 7.5-MHz linear-array transducer. Surgery confirmed a sensitivity of 79% for full-thickness tears and 50% for partial thickness tears. In 73 patients with negative ultrasonographic findings, the specifity was 100% for full-thickness tears and 90% for partial-thickness tears. The diagnostic sensitivity for full-thickness tears of the Hitachi EUB-340 system was significantly lower than those of Hitachi EUB-415 and EUB-515, and thus the former cannot be recommended for detection of rotator cuff tears. The sensitivity with regard to partial-thickness tears was also significantly lower with the Hitachi EUB-340 system as compared to the Hitachi EUB-515. There were no significant differences in false-positive rate among the three machines used. In conclusion, accurate ultrasonographic diagnosis of rotator cuff tear requires a high-resolution machine, as well as considerable experience in interpretation.

    Notes: Abstract Generalized enchondromatosis is a newly delineated type of enchodromatosis. Radiographically there are multiple enchondromata in almost all metaphyses of the long and short tubular bones and the lesions are in almost the same stage of development with mild platyspondyly and skull deformity. The pelvic changes are characteristic and, together with the metaphyseal changes of the long and short tubular bones, are probably diagnostic of this disorder. The present case demonstrates advanced radiographic features of this disorder associated with unusual soft tissue calcifications and hemangiomas. The presence of hemangiomas in our case as well as three cases in the literature suggests this feature is more than a coincidence.

    Notes: Abstract The clinical and radiographic features of the intermediate form of osteopetrosis in two sibs are presented in which the disorder appears to have been inherited as a recessive trait. Although this form of osteopetrosis has been poorly delineated, its recognition is practically important in order to give an accurate prognosis. This paper also presents an unusual complication of bilateral avascular necrosis of the femoral head in the younger sib. Radiographic changes of the femoral heads suggest those of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, though the possibility of avascular necrosis following unrecognized femoral neck fracture is not completely excluded.

    Notes: Abstract The clinical and roentgenographic manifestations of six cases suffering from spondyloepiphyscal dysplasia tarda with progressive arthropathy are presented. The roentgenographic features consist of generalized platyspondyly and varying degrees of epiphyseal involvement with conspicuous enlargement of both ends of the short tubular bones of the hands. This disorder appears at an earlier age, and is more crippling than the usual form of spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda. It is suggested that orthopaedic measures are essential for all patients with this disorder, as profound disability may be expected by progressive involvement of the major joints.

    Notes: Abstract Serum hyaluronan (HA) levels were measured in a rat model of collagen arthritis using a sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Values became elevated as the arthritis developed, correlating with its severity. Daily subcutaneous treatment with cyclosporin at the dose of 25 mg/kg per day for fourteen days completely prevented anti-type II collagen antibody production and the serum HA increase as well as development of collagen arthritis. HA in the blood may thus provide a good quantitative marker for joint disease in rat collagen arthritis with potential as a tool for evaluation of drug efficacy in this experimental model.

    Notes: Abstract We measured immunity to type II collagen and proteoglycans in osteoarthritic C57BL mice to determine whether it is related to osteoarthritis pathogenesis. Histological examination revealed articular cartilage lesions in all mice and synovitis in only a few mice. Immunological responses to type II collagen were found in collagen arthritic mice, but not in C57BL mice. Furthermore, immunological responses to proteoglycans were observed in proteoglycan-immunized mice, but not in C57BL mice. Therefore, articular cartilage degeneration may not result in autoimmunity to type II collagen and proteoglycans in osteoarthritis of C57BL mice, and immune responses to these components may not be a primary etiology of osteoarthritis in this model.

    Notes: Abstract The High-Energy Transient Experiment (HETE) is designed for the multiwavelengths study of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) in UV, X-ray and gamma-ray range with three scientific instruments. The X-ray instrument, Wide-field X-ray Monitor (WXM), consists of four units of one-dimensional position sensitive gas proportional counters and two perpendicularly oriented one-dimensional coded apertures. The WXM has a wide FOV of 1.5 steradian together with the capability to locate GRBs with ∼ 10 arcmin accuracy, and covers photon energies of 2 to 25 keV with an energy resolution of typically ∼ 18 % at 6 keV, measuring wide band spectra together with the gamma-ray spectrometer (FREGATE). The coded X-ray image will be deconvolved on board and the GRB location will be provided to the UV camera within ∼ 1 sec . GRB locations will also be broadcast in “real time” to ground-based observers for follow-up observations.

    Time variation of the X-ray spectrum and optical luminosity of SCO X-1 (1971)

    Notes: Abstract Results of rocket observations of SCO X-1 over the spectral range of 2∼20 keV are presented. The observations have been performed partly in India and partly in Japan under the collaboration of the three groups. The present results are compared with results of similar observations carried out by the LRL (Lawrence Radiation Laboratory) group. Some of these X-ray observations were accompanied by simultaneous optical observations. Relationships between the hardness of the X-ray spectrum and the X-ray intensity and between the hardness and the optical luminosity are compiled. The relationships among the parameters (temperature, density and size) which characterize the postulated isothermal cloud model of SCO X-1 are given. They indicate that SCO X-1 is characterized by a temperature of about 107–108K, a density of about 1016–1017 cm−3 and a radius of about 108–109 cm respectively. We further show that the temperature is inversely correlated with the size of the source; an increase in temperature corresponds to a decrease in the radius and an increase in density.
