Notes: [Auszug] In man, sickle-cells are produced when erythro-cytes containing the abnormal haemoglobin S are deoxygenated. This haemoglobin is relatively insoluble in the reduced state and on deoxygenation it forms intracellular tactoids which stretch the cell envelope and give the cell its bizarre sickle shape. ...

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In 1954 P. and A.Alius, observed a complete peroxydase defect of the neutrophils and monocytes in a 24-year-old woman. The eosinophils lost the reaction after two years instead of after 5 years, as is normal. Bone marrow puncture showed only isolated neutrophil promyelocytes that were peroxydasepositive. These stages normally also give a stronger reaction than the mature segmented neutrophils. Examination of the blood of the whole sib in 1965 confirmed the 1954 finding in the woman. Her parents, 4 children, her husband, a sister and a nice had a normal positive peroxydase reaction. In 1962Grignaschi and his colleagues determined the family character of the anomaly by demonstrating the peroxydase defect of the neutrophiles and monocytes in 2 siblings. Here, too, all the relatives showed a normal positive peroxydase reaction of the neutrophils. It seems to be a recessive hereditary blood cell anomaly where the carriers are homozygous to which no pathological significance can be attributed. The designation, “Alius-Grignaschi anomaly” is proposed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In the healthy human, as in all mammals, the formed elements causing coagulation, either in the organs forming the blood cells or in the blood itself, develop by polyploidy from the diploid megakaryoblasts to promegakaryocytes to the polyploid giant megakaryocytes. The cytoplasm of the megakaryocytes decomposes in the blood to platelets. In the lower vertebrates the non-mammals, however, diploid entire mature cells, the thrombocytes develop following complete mitoses from the diploid stem-cells. The blood platelets of the mammals and the thrombocytes of the non-mammals are biologically homologous. In the species of Batrachoseps which represent an intermediate haematological link between mammal and non-mammal, the thrombocytes also give off blood platelets from their cytoplasm. In severe haemopathies, especially in chronic myeloic leukaemia, a pathologically affected population of megakaryoblasts can adopt the primitive method of continuous separation and diploid promegakaryocytes and megakaryocytes are formed. The latter can still give off individual platelets. In addition to the normal polyploidal development of the non-affected population of these elements there is a return to phylogenetic conditions. This is not an isolated phenomenon in haemopathies in man. The same is true when in megaloblastic anaemias there is a return to the megaloblasts, the ichthyoid erythrocytes of the early embryonic period.
