    Notes: The growth of strained GaSb/GaAs quantum wells has been attempted for the first time (7% lattice mismatch), with the antimonide layers being constrained to take on the GaAs lattice parameter in the interface plane. The critical thickness for pseudomorphic growth of the strained layer was about 15 A(ring), with further growth resulting in islands of GaSb crystallites over the wafer surface. Photoluminescence spectra and photoconductivity from both single and double wells showed a strong signal at approximately 1.3 eV, identified as a Γ point transition. This was not consistent with band structure calculations for a GaSb/GaAs well, suggesting an error in the estimation of the band offsets and/or As incorporation in the strained layer.

    Notes: Single and multiple quantum wells of GaSb/GaInSb were grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. X-ray diffraction on an 80 A(ring) single well confirmed the Ga1−xInxSb composition to be x=0.15, for which the lattice mismatch is ≈1.0%. Photoluminescence and photoconductivity from this sample both showed a signal due to carriers in the well, the position of which was in good agreement with the calculated band diagram. Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations in the transverse magnetoresistance (ρxx) of a four-period multiquantum well, and the associated quantum Hall effect, indicated that a two-dimensional hole gas was present in one of the wells. Unusually, the strongest oscillations were seen for occupancy of an odd number of (spin split) Landau levels (ν=1,3,5,...,etc.) This sample also showed luminescence peaks at 738 and 755 meV which were attributed to recombination in the wells.

    Notes: We report the first observation of magnetotransport in piezoelectrically active heterostructures. Well-resolved quantum Hall plateaus and magnetoresistance minima are observed for two-dimensional hole gases confined in [111] oriented strained-layer Ga1−xInxSb/GaSb quantum wells with a piezoelectric field, of order 1×105 V/cm. We discuss the enhanced carrier densities induced by the in-built field and the differences observed between [111]A and [111]B orientations. Comparisons are made with simultaneously grown [001] structures. Stark energy shifts observed in photoluminescence are well accounted for by the estimated electric field.

    Notes: Abstract Flash-induced absorbance measurements at 830 nm on both nanosecond and microsecond timescales have been used to characterise the effect of ultraviolet light on Photosystem II core particles. A combination of UV-A and UV-B, closely simulating the spectrum of sunlight below 350 nm, was found to have a primary effect on the donor side of P680. Repetitive measurements indicated reductions in the nanosecond components of the absorbance decay with a concomitant appearance and increase in the amplitude of a component with a 10 μs time constant attributed to slow reduction of P680+ by Tyrz when the function of the oxygen evolving complex is inhibited. Single-flash measurements show that the nanosecond components have amplitudes which vary with S-state. Increasing UV irradiation inhibited the amplitude of these components without changing their S-state dependence. In addition, UV irradiation resulted in a reduction in the total amplitude, with no change in the proportion of the 10 μs contribution.

    Notes: Abstract The kinetics of P680+ reduction in oxygen-evolving spinach Photosystem II (PS II) core particles were studied using both repetitive and single-flash 830 nm transient absorption. From measurements on samples in which PS II turnover is blocked, we estimate radical-pair lifetimes of 2 ns and 19 ns. Nanosecond single-flash measurements indicate decay times of 7 ns, 40 ns and 95 ns. Both the longer 40 ns and 95 ns components relate to the normal S-state controlled Yz → P680+ electron transfer dynamics. Our analysis indicates the existence of a 7 ns component which provides evidence for an additional process associated with modified interactions involving the water-splitting catalytic site. Corresponding microsecond measurements show decay times of 4 μs and 90 μs with the possibility of a small component with a decay time of 20–40 μs. The precise origin of the 4 μs component remains uncertain but appears to be associated with the water-splitting center or its binding site while the 90 μs component is assigned to P680+-QA − recombination. An amplitude and kinetic analysis of the flash dependence data gives results that are consistent with the current model of the oxygen-evolving complex.

    Notes: Abstract A carbon fibre reinforced nickel composite has been fabricated, and some of the mechanical properties investigated. The composite contains some misaligned and broken fibres, and a poor bond exists between the carbon fibre and the nickel. The mechanical properties are, to a very large extent, influenced by these factors. The oxidation resistance was found to be poor, and therefore a serious limitation for high temperature use.
