    Notes: Site effects on the molecular hydrogen elimination from propane at 157 nm excitation have been studied using the photofragment translational spectroscopic technique. Experimental results indicate that H2 elimination from the internal carbon of propane (2,2-elimination) is predominant while eliminations from the terminal carbon (1,1- and 1,3-elimination) and the vicinal carbons (1,2-elimination) are minor. The translational energy distributions obtained for these processes also show that the dynamics of H2 eliminations from different sites are significantly different. Relative branching ratios of the atomic hydrogen (H) and the molecular hydrogen (H2) elimination processes were also determined. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Photodissociation of propane at 157 nm excitation has been investigated using the photofragment translational spectroscopic (PTS) technique. Three dissociation channels have been experimentally observed: the atomic hydrogen (H) elimination, the molecular hydrogen (H2) elimination, and the methyl radical (CH3) elimination. Product translational energy distributions have been measured and relative branching ratios have also been estimated, which indicate that all these three processes are significant. The site effects on the H and H2 elimination have been quantified by investigating the photodissociation of the four propane isotopomers: CH3CD2CH3, CD3CH2CD3, CH2DCH2CH2D, and CD3CD2CD3. Experimental results indicate that the yield of the H elimination from the two terminal CH3 groups (terminal-H elimination) is larger than that from the internal CH2 group (internal-H elimination). H2 elimination from the internal carbon atom of propane (2,2-H2 elimination) is the dominant process while H2 elimination channels from the vicinal carbon atoms (1,2-H2 elimination) are less significant. Minor processes of H2 elimination from terminal carbon atoms (1,1-H2 and 1,3-H2 elimination) were also observed. The translational energy distributions also show that the dynamics of H and H2 elimination from different sites are significantly different. Relative branching ratios of H and H2 elimination processes from different sites have also been determined. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Photodissociation of 1,1-difluoroethylene (F2CCH2) at 157 nm has been investigated using photofragment translational spectroscopy. Five dissociation channels have been experimentally observed; molecular HF elimination, H atom elimination, molecular hydrogen (H2) elimination, F atom elimination, and double bond breaking. Molecular HF elimination and H atom elimination channels are found to be the two major dissociation pathways in photodissociation of F2CCH2 at 157 nm excitation. Molecular hydrogen (H2) elimination and double bond cleavage are also significant, while F atom elimination is a minor process. Product translational energy distributions for all dissociation channels have also been measured. All translational energy releases are peaked at energies away from zero, indicating that the dissociation of F2CCH2 at 157 nm excitation most likely occurs with exit barriers on the ground electronic potential surface through internal conversion from the initially excited electronic state. Branching ratios and averaged energy partitions for different channels have also been estimated. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Study of the effects of environmental salinity on the glomerular areas and the nuclear areas of the renal tubules in tilapia showed significant differences (P 〈 0.001 or 0.05) between seawater- and freshwater-adapted fish. Upon seawater adaptation, there were decreases in the glomerular areas and the nuclear areas in the main segments of the nephron: glomerular, −24.1%; 1st proximal, −17.1%; 2nd proximal, −21.5%; distal, −9.1%; collecting, −26.5%. These cytometrical changes are discussed in relation to the different osmoregulatory functions of euryhaline teleosts adapted to sea water and to fresh water.

    Notes: Background : Recent studies suggest that the Helicobacter pylori eradication rate in patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia is lower when compared to patients with peptic ulcer diseases.Aim : The aim of this study was to study the efficacy of triple therapy for H. pylori infection in patients with duodenal ulcer vs. patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia.Methods : A total of 582 Chinese patients with proven H. pylori infection were recruited to receive: omeprazole 20 mg, amoxicillin 1000 mg and clarithromycin 500 mg all given twice daily for 7 days (OCA regime). Endoscopy with rapid urease test, histology and culture were performed before treatment. Post-treatment H. pylori status was determined by 13C-urea breath test. Metronidazole, clarithromycin and amoxicillin resistance was defined as minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 〉8 μg/mL, 〉1 μg/mL and 〉1 μg/mL, respectively.Results : A significantly higher (intention-to-treat/per-protocol) eradication rate was found in patients with duodenal ulcer than those with non-ulcer dyspepsia (91/94% vs. 84/88% respectively, P = 0.011 and P = 0.016). Clarithromycin resistance rate was higher in patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia than those with duodenal ulcer (14% vs. 6%, P = 0.015). Clarithromycin resistance (40% vs. 5%, P 〈 0.001, OR 12, 95% CI: 5.7–24.3) and the diagnosis of non-ulcer dyspepsia (91% vs. 84%, P = 0.011, OR 2.0, 95% CI: 1.2–3.3) significantly affected the success of H. pylori eradication.Conclusion : Clarithromycin resistance accounts for the significantly lower and suboptimal H. pylori eradication rate of OCA regimen in Chinese patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia compared to those with duodenal ulcer.
