    Notes: Abstract Background: To determine the potential ability of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with single-shot echo-planar imaging (DW imaging) in the upper abdomen by apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and signal:intensity ratio (SIR) measurements. Methods: DW imaging was performed in 61 clinical patients. ADCs in the liver, pancreas, spleen, kidney, and different pathological conditions were calculated. Spleen-to-liver SIR and segmental intensity difference of the liver (SID) were also calculated. Results: The mean ADCs (mm2/s) were 2.28 × 10−3± 0.07 in the liver, 1.44 × 10−3± 0.05 in the spleen, 1.94 × 10−3± 0.19 in the pancreas, and 5.76 × 10−3± 0.06 in the kidney. The mean ADC of cirrhotic liver was 1.96 × 10−3± 0.62, which was lower than that of normal liver. Other pathologic conditions also showed ADCs different from those of normal tissues. All DW images showed significantly higher spleen-to-liver SIRs and SIDs than did T2-weighted images (p 〈 0.05). Conclusion: The mean ADCs obtained with DW imaging were different in each upper abdominal organ and with each pathologic condition. DW images showed better soft tissue contrast than did T2-weighted images with regard to SIR and CNR in depicting and characterizing upper abdominal disorders.

    Notes: Abstract Background: Our purpose was to review a series of 14 patients with atypical exocrine and endocrine pancreatic tumors to derive characteristic computed tomographic and pathologic features that might allow better diagnosis, categorization, and management of these patients. Methods: Medical records from several university medical centers were reviewed retrospectively. Results: We identified three separate types of pancreatic tumors that had substantially different morphologic and prognostic features. Among these rare tumors, anaplastic carcinoma was the most common (nine of 14 cases), and these tumors were large, partly necrotic, locally invasive, and invariably metastatic (lymph nodes and/or liver) at the time of diagnosis. Three patients with poorly differentiated (small cell) carcinoma had a confluent pancreatic mass and lymphadenopathy but no ductal obstruction, closely resembling lymphoma or metastatic disease. Two patients with giant cell (osteoclastlike) carcinoma had a large, encapsulated multicystic tumor with hemorrhage, and these tumors were resectable for cure. Conclusion: Although a specific diagnosis may not be possible in some cases, we believe that knowledge of certain pathologic and computed tomographic features should lead to optimal diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis.

    Notes: Abstract Background: To identify the most useful combinations of various pre- and postcontrast magnetic resonance (MR) image sequences in detecting hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and its intrahepatic metastases before and after injection of SHU-555-A. Methods: Thirty-eight lesions in 16 patients were evaluated before and after administration of SHU-555-A by using fast spin echo (FSE), gradient echo (GRE), and echo planar (EP) imaging sequences using a 1.5-Tesla superconducting MR system. The signal intensity ratio (SIR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of the lesions, signal-to-noise ratios, and other parameters were calculated. Results: Tumors were better detected after injection of SHU-555-A on all pulse sequences except on out-of-phase T1-weighted (T1W)-GRE sequences. Tumor detectability was higher for precontrast EP imaging and T2*-weighted (T2*W)-GRE sequences, whereas detectability at postcontrast was higher for T2*W-GRE, proton-density-weighted-FSE, and in-phase T1W-GRE sequences. The SIR and CNR at precontrast were highest for EP imaging, and those at postcontrast were highest for T2*W-GRE. Conclusion: SHU-555-A will increase the detectability of HCC and its liver metastases. T1W- and T2*W-GRE sequences would be the sequences of choice.

    Notes: Abstract Background: To elucidate the imaging characteristics of well-differentiated hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) on ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Methods: Ultrasonograms, CTs, and MR images of 18 histopathologically proven well-differentiated HCCs in 15 patients were reviewed. The findings of these images were correlated with histopathologic findings. Results: On US, seven tumors were depicted as a hyperechoic area and eight as a hypoechoic area. Three tumors were not visualized. On precontrast CT, four tumors were depicted as a low-density area, but 14 were not visualized. On conventional contrast-enhanced CT, 12 tumors were depicted as a low-density area but six were not visualized. On T1-weighted MR images, 10 tumors had high signal intensity and two had low signal intensity. Six tumors were not visualized. On T2-weighted MR images, five tumors had high signal intensity and two had low signal intensity. Eleven tumors were not visualized. Tumors with fatty change and/or clear cell formation were frequently hyperechoic on US and hyperintense on T1-weighted MR images. Conclusions: Well-differentiated HCCs show different findings on US, CT, and MR imaging. Therefore, reliable diagnosis of well-differentiated HCCs by these imaging techniques may be difficult.

    Notes: Summary Regional cerebral protein synthesis following brief ischemia was investigated in the Mongolian gerbil, utilizing l-[methyl-14C]methionine autoradiography. Transient ischemia was induced for 1,2 or 3 min. At various recirculation periods up to 48 h, animals received a single dose of l-[methyl-14C]-methionine and then were terminated 35 min later. Sham-operated animals showed a normal pattern of amino acid incorporation into the proteins of the brain. Following 1-min ischemia, the pattern of protein synthesis was similar to that in the sham-operated gerbils. Ischemia for 2 min, however, caused marked inhibition of protein synthesis in the neocortex, striatum, hippocampal CA1 sector and the thalamus at 1 h of recirculation. Extensive recovery of protein synthesis was found in the neocortex, the striatum, the hippocampal CA1 sector and the thalamus at 5–24 h of recirculation, but, a slight inhibition was detectable in the hippocampal CA1 sector in one of six animals. This inhibition had fully recovered at 48 h of recirculation. Following 3-min ischemia, severe impairment of protein synthesis was found in the neocortex, striatum, the whole hippocampus and the thalamus. After 5–24 h of recirculation, the protein synthesis in these regions had gradually recovered, except that complete lack of amino acid incorporation was seen in the hippocampal CA1 subfield. This impairment of protein synthesis in the hippocampal CA1 sector was not recovered at 48h of recirculation. Morphological study indicated that 2-min ischemia did not produce any significant neuronal damage in the brain, whereas gerbils subjected to 3-min ischemia revealed a mild neuronal damage in the hippocampal CA1 sector. The present study indicates that even non-lethal ischemia can produce a severe inhibition of protein synthesis in the selectively vulnerable regions during the early stage of recirculation.

    Notes: Summary The octapeptide xenopsin, previously isolated from amphibian skin, stimulates exocrine pancreatic secretion of bicarbonate and protein in conscious dogs and increases the volume of secretion. This effect is shown in the dose range of 1.25 up to 160 pmoles kg−1min−1 The high potency of this peptide is suggestive of a possible physiological role of xenopsin in mammals.

    Notes: Summary 1. The cortico-cortical projection from area 5 to area 4 γ was studied in anesthetized cats. 2. Intracortical microstimulation of area 5 produced EPSPs in pyramidal tract (PT) cells in area 4 γ. Such EPSPs were analysed in a total of 54 fast PT cells. The rising phase of these EPSPs was often composed of fast and slow components. 3. Fast-rising EPSPs (fast component) were produced predominantly by stimulation within layer III of area 5 while slow-rising EPSPs (slow component) were evoked predominantly by stimulation within layer V of area 5. 4. The amplitudes of the fast and slow components of EPSPs produced during repetitive stimulation within layers III and V of area 5 decreased and increased, respectively, with an increase in the stimulus frequency without any appreciable changes in their latency and time-to-peak. The slow component was much less influenced by membrane hyperpolarization than the fast component. 5. Retrogradely labeled neurons were found not only in layer III but also in layer V of area 5 following HRP injection centered on superficial layers (I–III) of area 4γ. 6. It is suggested that there are two groups of cortico-cortical neurons in layers III and V of area 5, which may make monosynaptic contact with the proximal and distal sites of fast PT cells in area 4γ, respectively.

The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical applicability of two-dimensional (2D) thick-slice, contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance digital subtraction angiography (MRDSA) with high temporal resolution in diagnosis of brain tumors. Forty-four patients with brain tumors including, 15 meningiomas, 8 gliomas, 6 metastatic tumors, 4 neuromas, and 2 hemangioblastomas, were studied with 2D MRDSA with frame rate approximately 1 s. Images were continuously obtained following the initiation of bolus injection of gadolinium chelates for 40 s and subtraction images were generated in a workstation. We evaluated visualization of normal cranial vessels on MRDSA and compared MRDSA and intra-arterial digital subtraction angiography (IADSA) with regard to hemodynamic information. Large cerebral arteries, all venous sinuses, and most tributaries were clearly visualized. A stain was present in hypervascular tumors including all 15 meningiomas and 2 hemangioblastomas on MRDSA. Presence of a stain demonstrated on MRDSA and that on IADSA coincided in 16 of 20 cases (Spearman rank correlation value was 0.85). The location, shape, and phase of the stain on MRDSA were similar to those on IADSA. Two-dimensional MRDSA with high temporal resolution has a unique ability to demonstrate cerebral hemodynamics, such as IADSA, and can play an important role in assessing brain tumors.

    Notes: Abstract A 54.95-MHz coherent backscatter radar, an ionosonde and the magnetometer located at Trivandrum in India (8.5○N, 77○E, 0.5○N dip angle) recorded large-amplitude ionospheric fluctuations and magnetic field fluctuations associated with a Pc5 micropulsation event, which occurred during an intense magnetic storm on 24 March 1991 (Ap=161). Simultaneous 100-nT-level fluctuations are also observed in the H-component at Brorfelde, Denmark (55.6○N gm) and at Narsarsuaq, Greenland (70.6○N gm). Our study of the above observations shows that the E-W electric field fluctuations in the E- and F-regions and the magnetic field fluctuations at Thumba are dominated by a near-sinusoidal oscillation of 10 min during 1730–1900 IST (1200-1330 UT), the amplitude of the electric field oscillation in the equatorial electrojet (EEJ) is 0.1-0.25 mV m−1 and it increases with height, while it is about 1.0 mV m−1 in the F-region, the ground-level H-component oscillation can be accounted for by the ionospheric current oscillation generated by the observed electric field oscillation in the EEJ and the H-component oscillations at Trivandrum and Brorfelde are in phase with each other. The observations are interpreted in terms of a compressional cavity mode resonance in the inner magnetosphere and the associated ionospheric electric field penetrating from high latitudes to the magnetic equator.
