    Notes: Background Allergic rhinitis (AR) is associated with robust infiltration of immune cells and mediators that may contribute to clinical manifestations of the disease.Objective To review the complex immune effector mechanisms involved in the allergic response and discuss their effects on the pathophysiological and clinical manifestations of AR. Desloratadine, a novel antihistamine, was used as a probe with the goal of attaining a better understanding of the inflammatory processes underlying the allergic response.Methods Data were obtained from abstracts and peer-reviewed journals. The pathophysiology of the allergic response has been extensively studied. This paper presents only data from studies that used desloratadine at physiologically relevant concentrations.Results Key mediators involved in the allergic response and in pathophysiological and clinical manifestations of the immune response were reviewed. Desloratadine was used as a probe to further elucidate the mechanisms involved during an allergic response.Conclusions Some have proposed a link between the pathophysiology of AR and the clinical manifestation of symptoms. Desloratadine, a new-generation antihistamine, has demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in vitro; indeed, desloratadine is capable of intervening at various points in the immune cascade. Although in vitro results do not necessarily correlate with clinical efficacy, the anti-inflammatory properties of desloratadine may contribute to its efficacy in patients with AR, allergy-induced asthma, and other related allergic conditions. Antihistamines that modulate in the immune system at various stages may optimize treatment of allergic disease.

    Notes: The effect of terfenadine on histamine release from human basophils and LTC4 production and release from human eosinophils was evaluated. Eosinophils and basophils were obtained by discontinuous gradient centrifugation of the peripheral blood of atopic asthma patients who were off medication. Anti-IgE-induced histamine release from human basophils was significantly inhibited by terfenadine. Maximum inhibition was obtained at 1 × 10–5m terfenadine (percentage inhibition = 57.0 ± 20.1; P 〈 0.05). However, only the highest dose of terfenadine used in this study, i.e. 2 × 10–5m, significantly inhibited calcium ionophore (A23I87)-induced histamine release from human basophils (percentage inhibition = 40.0 ± 14.6; P 〈 0.05), and LTC4 production from human eosinophils (percentage inhibition = 59.8 ± 9.9; P 〈 0.05. These findings demonstrate that terfenadine, in addition to its known antihistaminic property, also has an inhibitory effect on chemical mediator release.

    Notes: Abstract Cation- and anion-substituted zirconium phosphates of X kZr m (PO4) n−y Y composition, where X = Na+, La3+, NH4 +, Y = F−, WO4 2−, 1/3 〈 k 〈 2, 2 〈 m 〈 4, 3 〈 n 〈 6 were synthesized by the procedure, including mechanical activation of the starting salts mixture followed by annealing at 300–900°C. The interaction between components was studied by XRD, EXAFS, FT–IR, [31P-MAS] NMR. The possibility of synthesizing nonstoichiometric compounds is demonstrated and prospects for application of the mechanochemical method for synthesis of complex zirconium phosphates are outlined.

    Notes: Abstract The use of diphasic or multiphasic composites, involving one negativeα phase to control and lower the thermal expansion of a ceramic for substrate, laser mirror and anti-thermal shock applications, was studied. The two phases thermodynamically stable with each other — one with negativeα and the second with positiveα were mixed, sintered and characterized for thermal expansion behaviour. The negative-α phase was selected from the [NZP] or [CTP] structural family. Specific systems including NaZr2P3O12, CaZr4P6O24 + Nb2O5, GdPO4, ZrSiO4, Mg3(PO4)2, MgO and ZnO were investigated. Several compositions exhibited a near-zero expansion profile over a wide temperature range.

    Notes: Abstract A structural model is proposed to describe the highly anisotropic thermal expansion in the sodium zirconium phosphate NaZr2P3O12 structure as a result of the thermal motion of the polyhedra in the structure. In the proposed model the rotations of the phosphate tetrahedra are coupled to the rotation of the zirconium octahedra. Of the two versions considered, the first one allows angular distortions to occur only in the ZrO6 octahedra; the second one permits all polyhedra to be distorted.

    Notes: Abstract  Nanocomposites based upon framework zirconium phosphates with supported WO3, MoO3 and Pt nanoparticles were synthesized via the incipient wetness impregnation of high-surface-area mesoporous phosphate samples with water solutions of corresponding salts followed by drying and calcination. The structure and surface properties of nanocomposites were studied by using combination of structural and spectral methods. Due to a strong interaction between supports and supported species, the structure of the latter differs considerably from that of the bulk phases. Surface acid centers typical for zirconium phosphates disappear suggesting their participation in bonding nanoparticles of promoters. Instead, new types of strong acid sites associated with tungsten oxide clusters emerge. The effect of these promoters on performance of zirconium phosphates in the reaction of pentane and hexane isomerization is considered.

    Notes: Abstract  The innovations in microwave processing of ceramics have been dominated to date by serendipitous discovery, because the interaction between such radiation as delivered via available tools and the materials of widely varying properties, sizes, and shapes is so complex that it has defied quantitative analysis. For over 10 years a wide variety of inorganic ceramic and semiconducting materials have been synthesized, sintered, and reacted in our own labs, including microwave hydrothermal synthesis of metals, ferrites, and electroceramic phases. These local results are summarized and used as the reference point for reporting on two different new advances: sintering of WC-Co composite tool bits and other similar objects in under 15 min, while retaining extremely fine microstructures, without any grain growth inhibitors; using reduced TiO2 or Ta2O5 for the synthesis of phases such as BaTiO3, Ba3MgTa2O9, and Pb(Zr.Ti)O3 in a few minutes in a 2.45 GHz field at the astonishing temperatures of 300–700 ºC.

    Notes: Abstract. Apoptosis is an essential and highly conserved mode of cell death that is important for normal development, host defense and suppression of oncogenesis. Faulty regulation of apoptosis has been implicated in degenerative conditions, vascular diseases, AIDS and cancer. Among the numerous proteins and genes involved, members of the Bcl-2 family play a central role to inhibit or promote apoptosis. In this article, we present up-to-date information and recent discoveries regarding biochemical functions of Bcl-2 family proteins, positive and negative interactions between these proteins, and their modification and regulation by either proteolytic cleavage or by cytosolic kinases, such as Raf-1 and stress-activated protein kinases. We have critically reviewed the functional role of caspases and the consequences of cleaving key substrates, including lamins, poly(ADP ribose) polymerase and the Rb protein. In addition, we have presented the latest Fas-induced signalling mechanism as a model for receptor-linked caspase regulation. Finally, the structural and functional interactions of Ced-4 and its partial mam malian homologue, apoptosis protease activating factor-1 (Apaf-1), are presented in a model which includes other Apafs. This model culminates in a caspase/Apaf regulatory cascade to activate the executioners of programmed cell death following cytochrome c release from the mitochondria of mammalian cells. The importance of these pathways in the treatment of disease is highly dependent on further characterization of genes and other regulatory molecules in mammals.
