Notes: Summary We have identified a cDNA coding for the murine keratin D from a collection of clones representing F9 teratocarcinoma stem cell mRNA sequences. These sequences are synthesized specifically after the addition of retinoic acid and cAMP to the culture medium. The clone is 1,382 nucleotides long and contains the entire information for the active polypeptide, the complete 3′ end and most, if not all, of the 5′ non-coding region. The mRNA is found in hepatocytes, in PYS-2 cells (an endodermal cell line) and in differentiated (retinoic-acid-treated) F9 cells, but not in untreated F9 cells. The length of the mRNA is 1.4 kb, as estimated by Northern blot hybridization. Southern hybridization performed under very stringent conditions detects a single fragment hybridizing strongly with the cloned cDNA, suggesting that the mouse genome contains only one or very few copies of this gene. We present the first complete sequence of a keratin expressed in simple epithelia, i.e. keratin D, and discuss its structural features.

Notes: Summary The discharge patterns and layer distribution of entorhinal cortex (EC) units were investigated in paralysed and locally anesthetized rats injected with physostigmine in order to induce theta (θ) rhythm. Entorhinal unit activity and field potentials were recorded simultaneously with the same micropipette. Hippocampal CA1 θ rhythm was used as reference. Statistical analysis included auto- and cross-correlations and interval histograms. Results showed: a. the existence of rhythmic and non-rhythmic cells, both tending to fire in a constant phase relationship with θ rhythm; b. in all EC subdivisions, most rhythmic cells were located in superficial cell layers (II–III); c. on the average, rhythmic cells from the medial EC fired synchronously; d. non-rhythmic cells tended also to fire synchronously but with an opposite phase relationship with respect to rhythmic neurons. Although a complex organization in the rhythmicity of EC units is revealed, it is concluded that the neuronal sources of θ activity in the EC are located in superficial cell layers, and it is strongly suggested that the EC output through the perforant path may rhythmically modulate the discharge pattern of hippocampal pyramidal and dentate granule cells.

Notes: Summary The laminar distribution of theta (θ) field potentials in the entorhinal cortex (EC) was investigated in paralysed and locally anesthetized rats injected with physostigmine in order to induce θ rhythm. Electrode penetrations through the medial, intermediate and lateral subdivisions of the EC showed in all cases: 1. the presence of θ rhythm from layer VI to layer III approximately in phase with CA1 θ rhythm; 2. an amplitude minimum between the outer third of layer III and the inner half of layer I; and 3. a phase-reversed θ rhythm in layers II-I with an amplitude maximum in the outer half of layer I. Results indicate the existence of neuronal sources of θ rhythm in the EC.

Notes: Abstract We report a case of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in a 15-year-old girl with severe neurological disease, platelet function disorder and pulmonary haemorrhage, which remitted after plasmapheresis. The patient developed protein-losing enteropathy shrinking lung, and acute pancreatitis with pseudocyst formation. These infrequent complication of SLE are discussed.

Notes: Summary. We present two a-posteriori error estimators for elliptic partial differential equations, when we use a mixed method. One is based on a adequate evaluation of the residual of the finite element solution and the other on the solution of a local problem. We prove their equivalence with the norm of the error, when the data is locally smooth.

Notes: Summary ESR spectra are reported for a stable nitroxide radical 4-hydroxy-2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethyl-piperidine-1-oxyl (TANOL) introduced as impurity in a matrix of known structure, 4-hydroxy-2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethylpiperidine atX- andQ-band. The use of the perdeuterated nitroxide showed a considerable improvement in ESR spectra resolution for most orientations in the crystal. The interactions of protons in the neighbourhood of the paramagnetic group N−O were studied and the superhyperfine tensors for the two strongly coupled protons were determined: one of these protons is hydrogen-bonded to the N−O at a distance of 2.09 Å. The principal values of the tensor are −5.2; +5.4; −5.1 G. The second proton is further away from the electron and is certainly not involved in hydrogen bond. The principal values are in this case 2.0, −1.7, −2.7 G. Thea crystal axis is a principal direction for all magnetic tensors for TANOL in this system.

Notes: To study the effects of proteolytic enzymes on mice hair follicles, particularly on cells of the bulge area regarded as follicle stem cells.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉BackgroundPrevious application by iontophoresis of proteolytic enzymes on guinea pig skin resulted in degenerative effects on hair follicles and the hypothesis was proposed that some of the affected cells could be stem cells.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉MethodsTo mark putative stem cells transgenic mice were produced carrying the lac-Z gene fused to the Upstream Regulatory Region (URR) of Human Papilloma Virus 11 (HPV11), as they express this gene specifically in the cells of the bulge area. Chymotrypsin and papain were applied on skin by iontophoresis, trypsin in the form of liposomes.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉ResultsEnzyme application, both by electrophoresis and as liposomes, led to intense degenerative effects of the hair follicle, such as detachment of the inner root sheath, cystic dilation of the hair shaft and presence of epithelial cells within the lumen. Some of these cells represent hair follicle stem cells expressing β-galactosidase (β-gal), having been detached from the bulge area as a result of enzyme treatment, implying impairment of their function.

Notes: Methods of testing simple hypotheses about lifetime parameters from doubly censored data are given on the basis of the maximum likelihood principle. It is shown that, under the assumptions of standard type, the asymptotic distribution of proposed statistics is chi-square or linear combination of chi-square distributions. The choice of statistics optimal from the point of view of power is discussed and illustrated by several examples.

Notes: HLA-A,B,C and DR antigen frequencies were determined in a group of 188 patients suffering from acute myeloid (AML) and acute lymphoid leukaemia (ALL). These antigen frequencies were compared with those obtained on a panel of normal individuals (n= 109) of the same ethnic origin. The significance of the differences in the antigen distribution and the strength of the associations between particular HLA antigens and the disease were then calculated. The resuks obtained show a decreased frequency of HLA-Awl9 in the overall group of patients and the group of patients with ALL. In addition, the antigen frequency of the HLA-B18 and DRS(DRw11) antigens was also decreased in the overall group of patients and in those patients with AML but not in the patients with ALL. The results suggest that the antigen Aw l9 may confer some degree of resistance to the development of ALL and that the HLA-B18 and/or DR5 antigens may be resistance factors for the development of AML.

Notes: Changes in available lysine and protein digestibility which take place during thermal processing of canned white tuna with olive oil were evaluated using a steady-state procedure. Kinetic parameters were then calculated by means of weighted nonlinear regression and the jacknife procedures. Good agreement was found between predicted and observed values. The resulting kinetic equations can be used to evaluate, design and optimize thermal processing of tuna in oil.
