Notes: Summary Glucagon-like peptide-1 does not have specific, high-affinity receptors on rat liver membranes, does not displace glucagon from glucagon receptors on these membranes and does not stimulate the production of cyclic AMP by isolated rat hepatocytes. In the presence of glucagon, high concentrations of glucagon-like peptide-1 do not significantly alter the production of cyclic AMP. Thus, glucagon-like peptide-1 appears unlikely to have a direct action on hepatic carbohydrate metabolism.

Notes: Summary We evaluated the effect of hypoxia (7% v/v) on hepatic heme turnover in vivo and microsomal heme protein content in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Hepatic heme protein turnover, measured as14CO-production during continuous infusion of 5-14C-aminolevulinic acid, a precursor of nonerythrogenic heme, was decreased 60% during hypoxia and returned to control levels promptly after reoxygenation. Hepatic cytochrome P-450 content was decreased in hypoxic and 24-h reoxygenated animals. We conclude that normobaric hypoxia decreases hepatic cytochrome P-450 which could contribute to decreased drug metabolism in hypoxia. This decrease is probably due to heme oxygenase-independent breakdown of hepatic heme.

Notes: Summary The present report concerns investigation of bladder disturbances in 31 juvenile diabetics. It was shown that: 1. The predominant lesion is one of neuropathy. — 2. Vesical involvement such as increased capacity and atony was demonstrated by cystometry in 27 out of the 31 cases (87%). — 3. 4 cases had neck hypertrophy. — 4. The most striking symptom was a large volume of first morning urine. This information was elicited from the patients. They had no urological complaints. — 5. A high incidence of impotence was seen in diabetics with neurogenic bladder. — 6. The possible causes of such lesions and the value of certain therapeutic measures was discussed.

Notes: Summary Purkinje cells, impregnated with the rapid Golgi method, in a patient with primary degeneration of the granular layer showed abnormal orientation of the perikaryon and dendrites, reduction in size of the dendritic arbor, absence of spiny branchlets, and large numbers of stubby spines and hypertrophic spines on secondary dendritic branches; stubby spines and thorn-like formations were seldom observed on the primary dendrites and perikaryon of some Purkinje cells. These findings are similar to those described in the cerebellum of the homozygous weaver mutant mouse and in the cerebella of experimentally induced agranular phenocopies, thus suggesting that similar plastic changes occur in human and animal Purkinje cells as a result of the absence of parallel fibres input in early developmental stages. In addition, Purkinje cells in this patient showed club-shaped deformities in the distal region of primary dendrites, which were filled with radially oriented, short dendrites covered with stubby spines and hypertrophic spines. These latter structures appear to be fully impregnated asteroid bodies observed in paraffin sections.

Notes: Summary The authors report an uncommon case of type II glycogenosis. An 8-year-old boy developed a slow progressive myopathy. Biopsy of skeletal muscle showed scarce lesions under the optic microscope but in 50% of the fibers the presence of vacuoles filled with glycogen under the electron microscope. Ultrastructural analysis of fibroblasts in culture showed numerous vacuoles filled with glycogen, characteristic of type II glycogenosis. Enzymatic analysis revealed that acid-α-glucosidase activity was normal in muscle tissues but deeply deficient in leukocytes and fibroblasts in culture. This is, as far as we know, the first case with such a discrepancy in the distribution of the enzymatic activity, and it underlines the necessity of investigating several tissues in atypical cases.

Notes: Abstract A case of subacute necrotising encephalomyelopathy is reported with such note worthy features as early onset, dystonic manifestations and the presence of low attenuation areas in the basal ganglia on computerised tomography of the brain. Laboratory findings were normal and the diagnosis was confirmed at postmortem examination.

Notes: Freshly cleaved sodium chloride single crystals thermally etched both in air and in vacuum (10−5 torr) show three types of evaporation pit: concentric square pits and concentric circular pits in air etched crystals, and pyramidal pits in vacuum etched crystals. The pyramidal pits may be of three kinds: those with symmetric diagonals, those with one symmetric and one non-symmetric diagonal, and finally those with two non-symmetric diagonals. These pyramidal pits are of the same nature as those associated with dislocations, found on chemical etching of LiF crystals. The differences between pits produced in air and pits produced in vacuum are discussed in terms of surface fusion.
