Notes: abstract The extensive selection–adaptation literature spans diverse theoretical perspectives, but is inconclusive on the role of managerial intentionality in organizational adaptation. Indeed this voluminous literature has more to say about selection and sources and causes of structural inertia than about self-renewing organizations that might counteract such inertia. In this introductory essay, we identify four co-evolutionary generative mechanisms (engines) – naïve selection, managed selection, hierarchical renewal and holistic renewal – which illustrate the extensive range of evolutionary paths that can take place in a population of organizations. In particular, the managed selection engine provides the foundations of the underlying principles of co-evolving self-renewing organizations: managing internal rates of change, optimizing self-organization, and balancing concurrent exploration and exploitation. However, it is altogether clear that empirical co-evolution research represents the next frontier for empirically resolving the adaptation selection debate. The essay concludes with a discussion of requirements for co-evolutionary empirical research and introduces the empirical papers in this Special Research Symposium.

Notes: This paper describes the development of an information processing theory of the judgmental process in which individuals engage while rating their peers. Using protocol tracing methods, decision process models were constructed of how individuals rate their peers on seven widely used sociometric questions. The protocols revealed that individuals evaluate their peers along five primary behavior categories: (1) Mutual Influencing, (2) Categorizing/Summarizing, (3) Social-Directive, (4) Quantity of Verbal Communication, and (5) Listening. Models for each sociometric question were tested by comparing model predictions with actual group peer ratings. Using linear models only, high Spearman rank correlations (r8 range to 1.00) were obtained between predicted and actual peer rankings. Findings have implications for research in person perception and the attribution of leadership.

Notes: A method which combines thermal and plasma dissociation of a methane/hydrogen gas mixture for low-pressure chemical vapor deposition of diamond is described. A hot, thin-walled, refractory metal cathode is used to generate a high-current, low-voltage discharge. The substrates are located on the anode and immersed in the plasma emanating from the cathode tip. No auxiliary substrate heating is employed. Polycrystalline diamond particles and films are obtained on silicon (100) and molybdenum substrates at growth rates of 1–3 μm/h.

Notes: The complexity of interdependent structural systems greatly complicates the analysis of any single structure. This is particularly the case when a structure represents some behavioral process. For this reason it is necessary to devise measures which can differentiate qualitatively and quantitatively between structures as well as between subsets (or points) of a particular structure. For example, consider the authority structures of two different organizations. They exhibit similarities and differences which a behavioral analyst tries to identify and explain. Typically, both similarities and differences are compared by structural indices which, on the basis of past data and prior information, tend to reflect certain organizational traits. The purpose of this paper is to investigate one particularly important index—centrality. Centrality conveys the notion that points in a structure are not all ‘equal’. This ‘inequality’ vis-a-vis the structure creates a situation in which certain points will be more ‘central’ than others. In this paper we first identify the characteristics of centrality and observe how they may relate to behavioral research. We then develop a procedure for measuring centrality which is based on information theory.

Notes: We have measured the effect of the mass and pole strength of a magnet on its equilibrium levitation height z over a superconducting disk of YBa2Cu3O7. A simple image force model gives the observed dependence of z on the mass and pole strength, but not the observed proportionality factor.

Notes: Well-faceted diamond crystals and polycrystalline films have been produced by low-pressure, hot-filament-activated, chemical vapor deposition with the use of methane/ hydrogen gas. The effects on growth and morphology of varying filament and reactor tube materials as well as tube diameter are reported. Tungsten and tantalum filaments, operated under similar conditions, produced diamonds at essentially the same growth rates (typically ∼2 μm/h) and with similar crystallographic properties. Platinum filaments produced only graphitic deposits. Diamond growth and morphology appeared not to be influenced by changing the reactor wall material from fused quartz to Al2O3 or Pyrex or by varying the tube diameter.
