Notes: Abstract  In this paper, we review the work done in forensic toxicological analysis during about the last 30 years in Europe and to some extent in other parts of the world to assure the quality of toxicological investigations. Guidelines for carrying out toxicological analyses set up by professional bodies in the United States (AAFS/SOFT), Europe (GTFCh) and worldwide (TIAFT) are mentioned, and the problems of complying with the regulations set up in EN 45 000/ISO 9000 are discussed in detail. There are still diverging opinions as to whether toxicological laboratories should comply with good laboratory practice or with EN 45 000, and, as fas as Germany, Switzerland and Austria are concerned, a working group of the GTFCh is discussing which procedure should be adopted. Apart from having this discussion, the group aims to standardize suitable methods and is planning the organization of suitable round robins.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The toxicologic findings of a fatal poisoning with rifampicin (Rimactan) are presented. The concentration of rifampicin and its two major metabolites 25-desacetylrifampicin and 3-formylrifamycin in post-mortem blood, urine, bile and liver at about 10 h after ingestion of 14–15 g was determined using a high-performance liquid chromatographic method. The results of the toxicological analyses were compared with findings in fatal and non-fatal intoxications and after therapeutic administration of the drug. Possible explanation for the fatal outcome is given.

Notes: Summary A system connecting the Perking Elmer Multifract F-40 gas chromatograph with automatic sample introduction system to a small computer is described. By means of this connection the F-40 can be controlled by the computer and the blood alcohol values of each sample are calculated and printed without human interaction. An outline of the program is given.

Notes: Summary Barioliths consist of inspissated barium mixed with feces. They are a rare complication after barium contrast roentgenography and occur almost exclusively in the large bowel. Mostly asymptomatic or causing only slight symptoms and signs, they may persist for months or years. We report a severe case of cecal bariolith. Clinical symptoms and signs, radiological findings, intraoperative findings, and histology are presented and discussed with reference to the literature.

Notes: Summary After a short description of the background and fundamentals, a program system for a microcomputer is described that permits the implementation of a laboratory-specific database and information system. Due to standardized program and data structures and compatibility with different hardware, as well as portability, similar laboratories have the potential of carrying out cooperative studies on a national and international basis.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The identification and quantitative determination of barbituric acid derivatives and some other frequently occurring drugs in human body fluids and organs is described. Extraction methods and various stationary phases are discussed. Relative retention times for 20 barbiturates, 3 hydantoin derivatives and 7 other drugs are given. Complete separation of cyclobarbital and phenobarbital was achieved.

Notes: Summary A method for toxicological examinations is described, which is used together with the well known extraction technique for body fluids and viscera according to STAS-OTTO for the identification of a number of acidic and neutral drugs, especially barbituric acid derivatives. Thin layer chromatographic technique on Kieselgel G, a low cost gas chromatograph and a number of simple chemical group tests are used for the qualitative and quantitative determination of the substances without further purification. Relative retention times on three different stationary phases and Rf-values for eleven barbituric acid derivatives, five metabolites of Secobarbital and Amobarbital and for twelve other frequently occurring drugs are given. The detection limit is in the microgram range.
