Notes: The mononuclear complex of the title compound [alternative IUPAC name: bis(acetato-O)bis(pyridine-2-carboxamide oxime-N,N′)nickel(II)–ethanol (1/2)], [Ni(C2H3O2)2(C6H7N3O)2].2C2H5OH, crystallizes from ethanol as a disolvate. The coordination geometry at the Ni atom is distorted octahedral, with crystallographic twofold symmetry. The pyridine-2-carboxamide oxime ligands are coordinated to the metal through the N atoms of the pyridine ring and the oxime group. The acetate ligands are monodentate. The ethanol solvate molecule is linked to the non-coordinated O atoms of the acetate ligands via a hydrogen bond.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract In this retrospective analysis of an airbound emergency rescue system the extraclinical primary treatment of 274 injured (58%) or diseased (42%) children up to the age of 14 years of age were examined concerning response time, distribution of age and gender, severity, cause and type of injury, character of acute paediatric disease, preclinical emergency diagnosis and treatment, as well as mean of transportation and target hospital, by evaluating the extraclinical documentation of the emergency physician. By investigating the hospital charts of 193 of these 274 young patients the diagnosis made by the emergency physician could be verified in 92% and the clinical cause could be followed. After questioning a representative group of 157 patients an outcome with substantial restitution in 94,3%, a complete absence of patients in need of permanent care and a lethality of 5,7% could be determined. We present a database which can be called upon for future comparisons with an earthbound emergency rescue system.

Notes: Abstract Features of two potassium conductances implicated in the acquisition of conditioned reflexes, the slow calcium dependent conductance (gK+(Ca)) and the fast transient conductance (gK+(A)), were incorporated into a 6 × 6 element artificial neural network. Adaptive algorithms derived from observations of cortical neurons during associative learning changed gK+(A) in proportion to the product of this current and an EPSP-induced second messenger concentration, and changed gK+(Ca) as a function of a spike-induced second messenger concentration. This network concurrently acquired two distinct representations in response to presentation of stimuli: one resembled associative conditioning (defined in terms of its senstivity to forward pairing vs. simultaneous or backward pairing); the other reflected contiguous pairings of stimuli. The acquisition of one representation did not markedly interfere with acquisition of the other. This network may accordingly serve as an example of a self-organizing system which minimizes the postulated inherent cross talk between functionally dissiminar representations (Minsky and Papert 1988).

Notes: A visualization chamber has been developed to analyze potential correlations between osmotic step increase on yeasts and the resultant cell volume decreases. Image analysis was used to characterize the step increases in the center of the chamber and to measure the changes in the cell volume. Step increases of different intensities have been performed on the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This device has allowed the kinetics of the volumetric evolution of the cells to be observed. The water exit flow rate from the cell was found to occur in the first 10 s following the hypertonic step change. Comparison of the time constants of the chamber and of the cell volume variations allowed to conclude that the time constant of the water transfer across the membrane was short (about 1 s). © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
