Notes: Assessing the fire hazard of a material has three facets: (a) the generation of heat and combustion products; (b) their transport to the vicinity of the building occupant; and (c) the response of each subject to specific exposures. In this study, interest has focused on the aspect of HCl decay. Two models for HCl generation, transport, and decay have been developed: an empirical and a rigorous model. Both have been applied to predict the behavior of HCl in small and large scale fire experiments. The rigorous model accounts for primary variables (humidity and type and extent of surface) in such a way that it is essentially independent of scale and specific geometry. The results show that the fire hazard of chlorinated materials is exaggerated unless HCl decay is considered.

Notes: A soap/alcohol miniemulsion in combination with an homogenized mixture of monomer and initiator is utilized to generate PVC plastisol. Droplet distributions generated consist of two distinct types. Judicious control of soap-to-alcohol ratio allows control of the number and size of the smaller droplet family; homogenization and initiator water solubility affect the other. Final latex particle distribution may be unimodal or bimodal depending upon manipulation of these factors.

Notes: Growth of two droplet families and a polymer seed family as a function of percent monomer conversion in PVC miniemulsion synthesis demonstrates that polymerization in droplets predominates to ∼ 30-40% conversion, whereupon polymerization of seed becomes favored. This difference appears to be due to a liquid-to-solid phase change in the forming particles during the course of polymerization.
