Notes: A process has been developed that enables the rapid chemical vapor deposition of superconducting YBa2Cu3Ox. In this process a finely ground mixture of Y(tmhd)3, Ba(tmhd)2, and Cu(tmhd)2 (tmhd=2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionate) is slowly fed, and pneumatically transported, directly into the chemical vapor deposition furnace. Because vaporizers are not used, the number of process parameters that must be controlled is greatly reduced. Deposition rates are at least an order of magnitude greater than those achieved by reagent sublimation. Films have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and resistance versus temperature measurements. Films produced on planar MgO substrates have Tc values that are significantly higher than previously reported for MgO.

Notes: A new open-atmosphere chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique has been developed that we term combustion chemical vapor deposition (CCVD). During CCVD a flame provides the necessary environment for the deposition of a dense film whose elemental constituents are derived from solution, vapor, or gas sources. Ag, YSZ, BaTiO3, YIG, YBa2Cu3Ox, and Y2BaCuO5 have been deposited via CCVD with the combustion of a sprayed, cation-containing, organic solution as the sole heat source. CCVD could, for some applications, be less expensive and more flexible than conventional CVD.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes the Kidney Disease Quality of Life (KDQOLTM) Instrument (dialysis version), a self-report measure that includes a 36-item health survey as the generic core, supplemented with multi-item scales targeted at particular concerns of individuals with kidney disease and on dialysis (symptom/problems, effects of kidney disease on daily life, burden of kidney disease, cognitive function, work status, sexual function, quality of social interaction, sleep). Also included were multi-item measures of social support, dialysis staff encouragement and patient satisfaction, and a single-item overall rating of health. The KDQOLTM was administered to 165 individuals with kidney disease (52% female; 48% male; 47% White; 27% African-American; 11% Hispanic; 8% Asian; 4% Native American; and 3% other ethnicities), sampled from nine different outpatient dialysis centres located in Southern California, the Northwest, and the Midwest. The average age of the sample was 53 years (range from 22 to 87), and 10% were 75 years or older. Internal consistency reliability estimates for the 19 multi-item scales exceeded 0.75 for every measure except one. The mean scores for individuals in this sample on the 36-item health scales were lower than the general population by one-quarter (emotional well-being) to a full standard deviation (physical function, role limitations due to physical health, general health), but similar to scores for dialysis patients in other studies. Correlations of the KDQOLTM scales with number of hospital days in the last 6 months were statistically significant (p〈0.05) for 14 of the 19 scales and number of medications currently being taken for nine of the scales. Results of this study provide support for the reliability and validity of the KDQOLTM.

Notes: The low-pressure compressibilities of acetonitrile, acetaldehyde, and their mixtures were measured in the temperature range 40° to 100°C. From these data second virial coefficients were determined for the pure components and for the mixture. The absolute value of the coefficient B12, characteristic of interaction between dissimilar molecules, was considerably larger than that for B11 or B22, which are characteristic of interactions between similar molecules. As a result it was not possible to predict the properties of the mixture with only data for the pure components. Calculations based on the Stockmayer potential and with conventional mixing rules gave seriously incorrect results for the second virial coefficient B12.The data were interpreted with the aid of an association theory. Dimerization equilibrium constants and enthalpies and entropies of formation were computed for the pure-component dimers and for the complex. The heat of formation for the complex was significantly larger than that for the dimers; comparison with energy terms calculated from electrostatic theory suggest that the structure of the complex is different from that of the pure-component dimers.
