    Notes: Summary The effect of two structurally unrelated aldose reductase inhibitors, sorbinil and ponalrestat, on glomerular prostaglandin production and urinary albumin excretion was investigated in rats with diabetes induced by streptozotocin. It was found that both aldose reductase inhibitors, when administered from the time of induction of the diabetes, significantly decreased the raised urinary albumin excretion in the diabetic rats, although it remained elevated compared with non-diabetic rats. Glomerular prostaglandin E and 6-ketoprostaglandin F1α production was significantly increased in glomeruli obtained from the diabetic rats. Inhibition of aldose reductase caused a reduction in the raised glomerular prostaglandin production, although this remained above that observed in the non-diabetic rats. Subsequent experiments were performed to determine whether the effects of the aldose reductase inhibitors could be explained by effects on glomerular filtration rate. It was found that ponalrestat, at a dose which markedly reduced urinary albumin excretion, did not significantly affect glomerular filtration rate in non-diabetic rats, rats with untreated streptozotocin-induced diabetes and rats with diabetes partially treated with low dose insulin. Glomerular sorbitol concentrations were significantly elevated in untreated diabetic rats as early as two weeks after the induction of diabetes. It is concluded that the administration of aldose reductase inhibitors from the time of induction of diabetes significantly reduces glomerular prostaglandin production and urinary albumin excretion. The latter effect is not due to an effect on glomerular filtration rate. Increased polyol pathway activity may account in part for the increased glomerular prostaglandin production and urinary albumin excretion in early experimental diabetes.

    Notes: Abstract Given a text string of lengthn and a pattern string of lengthm over ab-letter alphabet, thek differences approximate string matching problem asks for all locations in the text where the pattern occurs with at mostk differences (substitutions, insertions, deletions). We treatk not as a constant but as a fraction ofm (not necessarily constant-fraction). Previous algorithms require at leastO(kn) time (or exponential space). We give an algorithm that is sublinear time0((n/m)k log b m) when the text is random andk is bounded by the threshold m/(logb m + O(1)). In particular, whenk=o(m/logb m) the expected running time iso(n). In the worst case our algorithm is O(kn), but is still an improvement in that it is practical and uses0(m) space compared with0(n) or0(m 2). We define three problems motivated by molecular biology and describe efficient algorithms based on our techniques: (1) approximate substring matching, (2) approximate-overlap detection, and (3) approximate codon matching. Respectively, applications to biology are local similarity search, sequence assembly, and DNA-protein matching.

    Notes: Abstract. Background: We assessed the color Doppler ultrasound (US) findings in focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH). Methods: Seven FNH lesions were imaged with color Doppler US and hepatic angiography. Results: In four lesions, color Doppler demonstrated a central stellate vascular appearance which correlated with central feeding artery with spoke-wheel sign angiographically. Except for one lesion, color Doppler US imaging correlated with angiographic findings. Conclusions: Color Doppler US is capable of demonstrating the typical findings of a central feeding artery and stellate vascular pattern in many cases of FNH.

    Notes: Abstract. Previous reports have indicated that Plasmodium falciparum-infected red cells (pRBC) have an increased Ca2+ permeability. The magnitude of the increase is greater than that normally required to activate the Ca2+-dependent K+ channel (K Ca channel) of the red cell membrane. However, there is evidence that this channel remains inactive in pRBC. To clarify this discrepancy, we have reassessed both the functional status of the K Ca channel and the Ca2+ permeability properties of pRBC. For pRBC suspended in media containing Ca2+, K Ca channel activation was elicited by treatment with the Ca2+ ionophore A23187. In the absence of ionophore the channel remained inactive. In contrast to previous claims, the unidirectional influx of Ca2+ into pRBC in which the Ca2+ pump was inhibited by vanadate was found to be within the normal range (30–55 μmol (1013 cells · hr)−1), provided the cells were suspended in glucose-containing media. However, for pRBC in glucose-free media the Ca2+ influx increased to over 1 mmol (1013 cells · hr)−1, almost an order of magnitude higher than that seen in uninfected erythrocytes under equivalent conditions. The pathway responsible for the enhanced influx of Ca2+ into glucose-deprived pRBC was expressed at approximately 30 hr post-invasion, and was inhibited by Ni2+. Possible roles for this pathway in pRBC are considered.

    Notes: Abstract.  Positron lifetime measurements on bulk samples of single crystal SiC wafers have shown that both 6H and 4H polytypes exhibit a bulk lifetime of 150±2 ps. All samples contained a second, defect-related lifetime component, ranging in value from 250 to about 300 ps with rather low intensities. The defect structure exhibited by the nanocrystalline samples is, not unexpectedly, much more complex. Positron beam experiments on Electron Cyclotron Resonance Chemical Vapour Deposited (ECR-CVD) SiC thin films showed that the positrons are very sensitive to changes in important film parameters as a function of the deposition conditions. It was found that the film density is lower than expected, probably due to hydrogen incorporation; variations in composition among different films were detected through variations in the S parameters, and differences were observed in the electric field at the film–substrate interface due to hydrogen passivation of dangling bonds and different substrate resistivities.

    Notes: Abstract We tried to improve the basic three-dimensional reconstruction technique by comparing preprocessing, segmentation, shading and rendering techniques in 15 examples of MR investigations of the knee joint. We conclude that signal-normalising, combined threshold and tracking segmentation, grey-level-gradient shading, and combined surface and volume rendering (i. e. hybrid rendering) are the methods of choice for the three-dimensional reconstruction process.

    Notes: Myliobatidae is a family of large pelagic rays including cownose, eagle and manta rays.They are extremely efficient swimmers, can cruise at high speeds and can perform turn-on-a-dimemaneuvering, making these fishes excellent inspiration for an autonomous underwater vehicle.Myliobatoids have been studied extensively from a biological perspective; however the fluidmechanisms that produce thrust for their large-amplitude oscillatory-style pectoral fin flapping areunknown. An experimental robotic flapping wing has been developed that closely matches thecamber and planform shapes of myliobatoids. The wing can produce significant spanwisecurvature, phase delays down the span, and oscillating frequencies of up to 1 Hz, capturing thedominant kinematic modes of flapping for myliobatoids. This paper uses dye flow visualization toqualitatively characterize the fluid mechanisms at work during steady-state oscillation. It is shownthat oscillatory swimming uses fundamentally different fluid mechanisms than undulatoryswimming by the generation of leading-edge vortices. Lessons are distilled from studying the fluiddynamics of myliobatoids that can be applied to the design of biomimetic underwater vehicles usingmorphing wing technology
