Notes: Mechanical properties of dried bread (a cellular baked product) equilibrated at different water activities (Aw) were measured using three-point bending and uniaxial compression to compare their responses to moisture sorption. The glass-to-rubber transition was clearly demarcated in all the mechanical property-Aw curves, although there were differences in critical Aw (0.32–0.56) at which the dramatic changes in mechanical properties occurred. The role of water appeared to be strictly that of a plasticizer where flexural mechanical parameters were concerned, leading to reduced modulus and fracture stress but increased fracture strain with increasing Aw. Uniaxial compression tests revealed moisture-induced mechanical antiplasticization effects on the material in the glassy state which resulted in maximum compressive fracture stress but minimum fracture strain over the Aw range from 0–0.56. Compressive modulus apparently was not affected much by moisture sorption up to an Aw of 0.43, above which it decreased sharply.

Notes: In this immunocytochemical study on the constitutive expression of Pax-7 protein in the postnatal chicken brain, Pax-7 showed region and cell type specific expression. In the optic tectum, only cells in grey matter showed positive immunoreactivities (IRs), whereas those in the white matters did not show any IRs. In thalamic nuclei and several pontine nuclei, we also localized Pax-7 positive IRs. On the contrary, in the cerebellum, Pax-7 was mainly localized within the Bergmann glia, whereas Purkinje cells did not show any IRs. In double immunolabelling studies, most of the Pax-7 IRs did not originate from neuroglial cells such as oligodendrocytes, microglia or astrocytes, but from neurons, with the exception of Bergmann glia in the cerebellum. The presence of Pax-7 IRs in the adult chicken brain could suggest that Pax-7 might play a role in maintaining normal physiological function in some postnatal chicken brain cells.

Notes: Abstract Thirty-eight wastewater samples were collected from 19 petrochemical plants located in Taiwan during 1991. These plants represented most of petrochemical industry in Taiwan. Water samples were passed through an XAD-2 resin column and then eluted by acetone. The mutagenicity of wastewater was determined by the Ames Salmonella/microsome test. 52.6 and 26.3% of wastewater collected respectively in summer and winter were found to exhibit mutagenic activity in Salmonella typhimuriumTA 98 and TA 100. Four samples collected from 2 plants had higher levels of mutagenicity. The measurement and identification of mutagenic pollutants in this kind of wastewater need further investigation.
