Notes: Abstract  We studied the expression of UDP-galactose: ceramide galactosyl transferase (CGT) mRNA in postnatal rat brains using an in situ hybridization technique. From P0 to P16, there was a defined temporal and spatial pattern to the earliest acquisition of CGT mRNA expression. In the forebrain, CGT mRNA-expressing (CGT+) cells were first detected in regions outside the subventricular zone around the lateral ventricle at P2. Cells in the external capsule, internal capsule and corpus callosum were later found to be CGT-positive. At P8 to P16, CGT+ cells were found in the thalamus, striatum, occipital and frontal cortex. In the case of midbrain and hindbrain, the first CGT+ signals were detected in the medullary raphe of the medulla oblongata at P0. CGT+ cells were subsequently located in the cerebellum, midbrain and pons from P4 to P16. That is, in regions closer to the areas in which CGT+ cells were first found, CGT mRNA expression was observed much earlier. These findings support the notion that there are at least two discrete waves of CGT mRNA signal expression in the forebrain and hindbrain.

Notes: In this immunocytochemical study on the constitutive expression of Pax-7 protein in the postnatal chicken brain, Pax-7 showed region and cell type specific expression. In the optic tectum, only cells in grey matter showed positive immunoreactivities (IRs), whereas those in the white matters did not show any IRs. In thalamic nuclei and several pontine nuclei, we also localized Pax-7 positive IRs. On the contrary, in the cerebellum, Pax-7 was mainly localized within the Bergmann glia, whereas Purkinje cells did not show any IRs. In double immunolabelling studies, most of the Pax-7 IRs did not originate from neuroglial cells such as oligodendrocytes, microglia or astrocytes, but from neurons, with the exception of Bergmann glia in the cerebellum. The presence of Pax-7 IRs in the adult chicken brain could suggest that Pax-7 might play a role in maintaining normal physiological function in some postnatal chicken brain cells.

Notes: Abstract The microstructure and mechanical properties of rapidly solidified Al–18 wt% Si and Al–18 wt% Si–5 wt% Fe alloys were investigated by a combination of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, tensile testing, and wear testing. The centrifugally atomized binary alloy powder consisted of the α-Al (slightly supersaturated with Si) and Si phases and the ternary alloy powder consisted of the α-Al (slightly supersaturated with Si), silicon, and needle-like metastable Al–Fe–Si intermetallic phases. During extrusion the metastable δ-Al4FeSi2 phase in the as-solidified ternary alloy transformed to the equilibrium β-Al5FeSi phase. The tensile strength of both the binary and the ternary alloys decreased with a high-temperature exposure, but a significant fraction of the strength was retained up to 573 K. The specific wear gradually increased with increasing sliding speed but decreased with the addition of 5 wt% Fe to the Al–18 wt% Si alloy. The wear resistance improved with annealing due to coarsening of the silicon particles.

Notes: Abstract The Al-12Si-5Fe-3Cu-1Mg(wt%) alloy was rapidly solidified by centrifugal atomization. The microstructural characteristics of rapidly solidified powder and the microstructure changes with heat treatment were investigated in terms and related to powder size. The microstructures of the powder consisted of dendritic α-Al, eutectic phase, Cu-rich phase, and needle-like intermetallic compounds. These phases were much finer than that of ingot cast structure and the size decreased with increasing cooling rate. The X-ray diffraction of the atomized powders revealed the presence of non-equilibrium 3-(AlFeSi) intermetallic phase. This phase appeared to transform to an equilibrium β-(AlFeSi) phase by heating at temperatures above 470°C. The extruded rod which was hot extruded at 360°C with an extrusion ratio of 40:1 also revealed the presence of the β-(AIFeSi) intermetallic phase. Using DSC, the exothermic peak due to precipitation from the supersaturated α-Al matrix was observed in the range of 200–250°C during continuous heating of atomized powder, and the size of the peaks increased with decreasing powder size.

Notes: Abstract Al2O3-WC composite powder was synthesized by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis using Al powder as a reducing agent. WC, W2C and Al2O3 were concurrently formed in WO3-Al-C system. It was found that the complete reaction was achieved with excessive addition of carbon and appropriate processing parameters such as degree of dilution, particle size of aluminum, pellet compaction pressure and carbon source. The final product which was leached by 50% 1 : 4 HNO3 + HF diluted solution was consisted of Al2O3-55wt%WC having 2–3 μm of mean particle size.

Notes: Abstract Three binary Mg-Al alloys containing nominally 5, 15, and 30 at % Al were prepared in the ingot and rapidly solidified flake conditions using the twin roll technique. The microstructure, mechanical properties, and electrochemical behavior of the extruded alloys in both the conditions were investigated. The hardness, tensile strength, and corrosion resistance increased with increasing Al content. Further, the hardness, tensile strength, and corrosion resistance of the rapidly solidified alloys were superior to the ingot-metallurgy alloys and this is attributed to the microstructural refinement and increased homogeneity in the rapidly solidified alloys.
