Description / Table of Contents: Summary Biliary re-excretion of sulfobromophthalein sodium (BSP) (1.2 µmol/rat) after retrograde intrabiliary injection is markedly inhibited by dehydrocholate sodium (Decholin) given intravenously as a constant infusion (3.1 µmol/min/kg body weight) or as a bolus injection (24.8 µmol/rat) to rats. Most interestingly Decholin demonstrates the same inhibitory effects on the biliary re-excretion of BSP when it is administered by retrograde intrabiliary injection (24.8 µmol/rat) together with the dye. In contrast to the inhibition of biliary re-excretion of BSP its biliary reabsorption from the biliary tract seems to be rather increased: about 80–85% of 1.2 µmol BSP are reabsorbed in all sets of experiments with Decholin in comparison to about 65% to the control group. Combined with histological data it is suggested that reabsorption of BSP after retrograde intrabiliary injection occurs at the ductular site whereas re-excretion takes place at the cannalicular membrane of the hepatocyte.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The results demonstrate the biliary reabsorption of14C-cholate,14C-glycocholate, and14C-taurocholate from the rat biliary tree after retrograde intrabiliary injection. It could be shown that retrograde injection of these bile salts (20 nmol) in a total volume of 40 µl leads to significantly increased biliary reabsorption in contrast to the administration in a retrograde volume of only 20 µl. These differences in reabsorption may be explained by greater reabsorption at a more proximal site in the biliary tree. Furthermore14C-glycocholate and14C-taurocholate are reabsorbed to a lesser extent in contrast to14C-cholate when bile flow was restarted at once after retrograde injection in a volume of 40 µl. It is speculated that conjugation of cholate to glycine and taurine has some effect on the extent of biliary reabsorption of this bile acid. Following the results presented in this paper one might hypothize that biliary reabsorption has an important influence on bile composition i.e. the biliary excretion of bile salts.

Notes: Summary The gastroduodenal tolerance of Tenoxicam and Diclofenac Na has been evaluated in a double-blind, parallel group study in 36 healthy male volunteers. The doses used were 20 mg Tenoxicam and 100 mg Diclofenac Na daily in a retard formulation for 14 days. Gastric tolerance was assessed by endoscopy, which was performed at base-line, after the 14 day dosing period and after a 14 day follow-up period without treatment. The mucosal lesions were scored using modified Lanza criteria. Tenoxicam was significantly better tolerated at the end of the 14 day dosing period (mean gastric score: Tenoxicam 1.3; Diclofenac Na 2.2). The two treatment groups had comparable scores at the base-line and post study assessments. Tenoxicam and Diclofenac Na were generally well tolerated. Only two volunteers reported intermittant lack of appetite, heartburn and a feeling of pressure in the stomach.

Notes: The optical and magneto-optical properties of weakly guiding single-mode buried channel waveguides in substituted yttrium iron garnet have been investigated experimentally. The propagation constant difference Δβ of the two coupled TE and TM modes, which is of particular interest for waveguide isolator application, is found to be strongly dependent on waveguide geometry. Measured results can be explained by the specific growth of the top cladding layer, which occurs into different crystallographic directions around the etched waveguide core. This leads to a local variation of the refractive index, which effects the guidance of light, and to a local variation of birefringence, which effects Δβ. The measured variation of Δβ is shown to be primarily caused by growth induced birefringence. It is demonstrated that Δβ can be controlled to small values at selectable waveguide widths as required for waveguide isolator application simply by an appropriate setting of fabrication parameters.

Notes: Magneto-optic single-mode buried channel waveguides in substituted yttrium iron garnet suitable for waveguide isolators have been prepared. The channels are fabricated in a three-step procedure: starting with multiple-layer planar single-mode waveguides, rib waveguides are wet etched and then overgrown with top cladding. Such waveguides show mode profiles well matched to that of single mode fibers. In mode conversion experiments, an extinction ratio of 20 dB was obtained. Waveguides coupled to single-mode fibers on both sides showed an overall insertion loss of about 4 dB.

Notes: 45° waveguide isolators based on magneto-optic channel waveguides with phase mismatch can be realized simply by choosing a proper orientation of the input polarization. This is demonstrated theoretically by visualizing the magneto-optic mode coupling as "coupling tracks'' on the Poincaré sphere, and is verified experimentally for real waveguides with considerable phase mismatch. More than 30 dB isolation is feasible in practical devices.
