    Notes: Summary Laboratory populations of German cockroach reared on food treated with R-20458 (75 ppm) or Ro 20-3600 (3000 ppm) became completely sterile and eventually extinct. The hypertrophied oocytes had excessively laid chorion, and the hypertrophied accessory sex glands contained excessive amounts of protein.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Bei Wahlversuchen entschieden sich Adulte und Nymphen vonBlattella germanica (L.) nicht gegen Nahrung, die mit R-20458 oder mit Ro 20-3600 behandelt war (200 ppm), womit das Fehlen einer Non-Präferenz erwiesen war. Ferner zeigten in einer gesonderten Studie mit behandelten Papierkarten (0,5 mg/cm2) diese zwei Insektenwachstumsregulatoren keine signifikante Abschreckung gegenüber Adulten der Deutschen Schabe. Dagegen erwies sich Farnesol signifikant als repellent. Köderformulierungen von synthetischen Insektenwachstumsregulatoren mit Juvenilhormonaktivität erscheinen aussichtsreich für die Bekämpfung der Deutschen Schabe.
    Notes: Abstract Blattella germanica (L.) (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae) adults and nymphs provided with choice food did not discriminate against food treated (200 ppm) with either R-20458 or Ro 20-3600 indicating the absence of non-preference. Also, in a separate study with treated paper cards (0.5 mg/cm2), these two insect growth regulators did not exhibit any significant repellency to the German cockroach adults. Farnesol, however, was found to be significantly repellent. The bait formulations of synthetic insect growth regulators with juvenile hormone activity appear promising for the control of German cockroach.

    Notes: By mutagenesis with N-methyl N-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine, in two steps, a number of methionine plus threonine double auxotrophs have been isolated from a glutamate producing Arthrobacter globiformis, excreting L-lysine in good amounts. For the three potent mutants tested the medium of WHITE was adjudged to be the best. Biotin, ammonium chloride and glucose was found to be optimum at 5 μg l-1, 40 mM and 4% level, respectively. With such optimal C and N source, the strain MT 35 yielded 28.0 g lysine l-1 of medium in flask culture.

    Notes: A number of lysine plus threonine double auxotrophs have been isolated from a ethionine resistant methionine producing strain of Brevibacterium heali previously isolated from soil by mutagenesis with N-methyl N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine in two steps. This strain excreted L-methionine in sufficient amounts. For the three potent mutants tested, the medium of ALFOLDI was judged to be the best. Biotin and ammonium nitrate were found to be optimal at 5 μg/l and at a 40 mM level, respectively. With such an optimal dose, the strain BhLT 27 yielded 25.5 g/l methionine in a flask culture containing methionine-analogue ethionine at a minimal inhibitory concentration.

    Notes: An integrated sequential computer programme for the solution of large linear algebraic systems encountered in the discrete analysis of complex structures using finite element idealization is described. The programme uses an algorithm based on Gauss elimination for solution and is independent of the possible symmetric nature of the system matrix thus enhancing the applicability of the programme for systems with unsymmetric coefficient matrices. The present programme can handle large band widths and the core memory is used efficiently for all feasible problem sizes. A FORTRAN print-out of the programme with relevant explanatory comments and a full notation list are appended.
