Notes: Measurements of highly accelerated turbulent boundary layers with and without mean cross-flow are presented and compared. The accelerated mean longitudinal velocity profiles suggest that the Reynolds shear stress, u'v', is greater in the two-dimensional case than in the three-dimensional case. The measured normal longitudinal Reynolds stress, u'u', is greater in the three-dimensional accelerated boundary layer case. The measurements indicate that the Reynolds stress tensor components decouple in the three-dimensional case; hence, the three-dimensionality alters the characteristic of nondecoupling observed in highly accelerated two-dimensional boundary layers. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This paper describes the result of both an experimental and an analytical investigation of the response of a two-dimensional, turbulent boundary layer in air to the presence of particles. Copper shot, 70 μm in diameter, were uniformly introduced into a vertical boundary layer, at a momentum thickness Reynolds number of about 1000. The particle mass flux was set at 20% of the fluid mass flux, and all measurements were made using a single-component, forward-scatter laser Doppler anemometer. The measurements clearly demonstrated that the particles damped fluid turbulence, apparently affecting all scales equally. The measurements further showed a strong correlation between the degree of damping and the particle concentration in the log region of the boundary layer.

Notes: Abstract  A new laser Doppler anemometer optimized for high spatial resolution near a wall is described. The instrument uses short focal length optics, a mirror probe in the flow, and side-scatter collection to produce a measuring volume 35 μm in diameter by 66 μm long. Data are presented for a two-dimensional boundary layer, demonstrating the instrument’s ability to measure Reynolds shear stresses as close to the wall as 0.1 mm, or y +≈3.

Notes: Abstract The effects of three-dimensionality on the turbulence producing near-wall structures over a rotating disk are examined using hydrogen bubble visualization. Laser Doppler anemometry measurements of the tangential and radial velocities indicate the flow to resemble that of an “infinite” disk. It was found that the crossflow acts to reduce vertical mixing during the turbulence ejection events, thus reducing the efficiency of the boundary layer in producing shear stress.

Notes: Abstract A portable laser sheet illumination source for flow visualization experiments has been developed utilizing fiber optic cable and standard optical bench components. This technique improves the convenience and safety aspects of using laser light by containing the concentrated laser energy inside a flexible and shielded fiber cable. Transmission efficiencies up to seventy-five percent have been obtained with a twenty meter long fiber cable and careful alignment of optical components. The current optical configuration can transmit a two-watt Argon-ion laser beam and produce a sheet one-half by one meter in size and approximately two to three millimeters in thickness.
