Electrochemical Synthesis of Organic Compounds of Metals,VII1). - Electrosynthesis of Alkoxides and Acetylacetonates of Iron, Cobalt and NickelAlkoxides, phenoxides and acetylacetonates of divalent iron, cobalt and nickel have been prepared by a new electrochemical synthesis from a metallic anode and compounds containing acidic hydrogen atoms. The product and current yields lie between 85 and 100% for the ethoxides 4-6, the n-butoxides 7-9, cobalt(II) phenoxide (13) and the acetylacetonates 14 to 16. Cobalt(II) tert.-butoxide (II) and iron(II) and cobalt(II) methoxides 1 and 2 resp. can be isolated in good yield and iron(II) tert.-butoxide (10) in moderate yield. Hydrogen is formed at the cathode. In the preparation of nickel(II) methoxide (3), deposition of nickel metal predominates (70%). - The electrolyte consists of alkali- or tetraalkylammonium halides, or mixtures thereof with lithium perchlorate, dissolved in alcohol or tetrahydrofuran. The acetylacetonates can also be synthesized using a solution of sodium chloride in aqueous alcohol. Acetylacetone is partly hydrogenated by the cathodically formed hydrogen. - Electrolytic cells, containing rotating cathodes and metallic anodes which are adjusted or replaced during the electrolysis, have been constructed for a continuous process. - The acetylacetonates 17 and 18 of trivalent iron and cobalt, respectively, have been prepared by reaction with oxygen during the electrolysis.
Notes:
Kathodisch entsteht Wasserstoff.
