Notes: Summary Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis (Mucambo) virus was able to multiply at 28° C in cultured mosquito cells(Aedes aegypti andAedes albopictus) without inducing any apparent cytopathology. The kinetics of virus multiplication was similar in mosquito and mammalian (Vero) cells. Twelve to twenty four hours post-infection, a maximum of 10–50 per cent of the cells were engaged in virus production; however, almost immediately this proportion fell abruptly tending to stabilize in the order of 0.01 to 0.05 per cent. No significant increase of infectious centers was observed after cell subculturing. Study of subpopulations of mosquito cells revealed a differential suceptibility to virus infection, which suggests that a balance of susceptible and virus resistant cells may play a role in the establishment and persistence of the chronic infection.

Notes: Abstract A 5-year-old girl with precocious puberty secondary to a suprasellar hamartoma is presented. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a lesion without attachment to the tuber cinereum or the mamillary bodies. Total resection of the tumour was performed.

Notes: Abstract Meningioangiomatosis (MA) is a rare benign intracranial tumour of uncertain pathogenesis, with only 33 cases reported in the literature. Imaging features have been described in 21 cases, only 3 with contrast-enhanced MRI. We present two cases of MA with MRI and/or CT findings and gross, ultrastructural, and immunohistochemical characteristics. MRI is particularly helpful for establishing the origin of the lesion and its anatomical location, while CT shows calcification, if present. The pathological characteristics establish the diagnosis and underline the differences from other entities such as malignant meningioma, one of the most important differential diagnostic considerations.

Notes: Abstract An operative series of 45 patients with anterior synostotic plagiocephaly is analyzed. In the cases of six children it was not possible to visualize synostosis of the cranial sutures on plain X-ray films or three-dimensional CT. Primary procedures were performed at an average age of 14 months with an average postoperative follow-up of 47.5 months. Children were operated on either with lateral canthal advancement (5 cases), unilateral orbital advancement with “tongue in groove” (12 cases), or bilateral orbital advancement (28 cases). Excellent results were obtained in 33/45 patients, while 8/45 children required secondary minor revisions. Of the three different surgical techniques, the results achieved by the bilateral approach were considered better than those attained with the unilateral techniques. Osteotomies of the nasal bones are recommended in the cases of older children with severe nasal deviation associated with dislocation of the nasoethmoidal complex.

Notes: Abstract Between its launch in October 1990 and the end of 1993, approximately 160 fast collisionless shock waves were observed in the solar wind by the Ulysses space probe. During the in-ecliptic part of the mission, to February 1992, the observed shock waves were first caused mainly by solar transient events following the solar maximum and the reorganisation of the large scale coronal fields. With the decay in solar activity, relatively stable Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) were observed betwen 3 and 5.4 AU, each associated with at least one forwardreverse shock pair. During the out-of-ecliptic phase of the orbit, from February 1992 onwards, CIRs and shock pairs associated with them continued to dominate the observations. From July 1992, Ulysses encountered the fast solar wind flow from the newly developed southern polar coronal hole, and from May 1993 remained in the unipolar magnetic region associated with this coronal hole. At latitudes beyond 30°, CIRs were associated almost exclusively with reverse shocks only. A comprehensive list of shock waves identified in the magnetic field and solar wind plasma data from Ulysses is given in Table 1. The principal characteristics were determined mainly from the magnetic field data. General considerations concerning the determination of shock characteristics are outlined in the Introduction.

Notes: Abstract Storage, at high temperature (≥ 25°C) andhigh relative humidity (≥ 65%), causesdevelopment of hard to cook (HTC) phenomenon in grainlegumes. The objective of this work was to study theeffect of storage simulating tropical conditions onchickpeas quality. The hardening of the Surutato 77,Mocorito 88, and Blanco Sinaloa 92 chickpea varietieswas produced using adverse storage (32 ± 1°C, RH = 75%, 160 days) conditions. For all samples, theHunter `L' values decreased and ΔE valuesincreased during storage, meaning a loss of colorlightness and development of darkening. Acceleratedstorage caused a significant decrease in the waterabsorption capacities and cooking times of whole seeds, cotyledons and seed coats of all samples, being morepronounced in The Blanco Sinaloa 92 variety. Furthermore, storage produced significant decreases in the seedcoat tannin content of the three materials; thisparameter increased significantly in the cotyledon. Inall samples, the levels of phytic acid decreasedsignificantly with the seed hardness. Hardening ofchickpea grains caused a decrease in the invitro protein digestibilities of all varieties. Theseresults suggest that both thecotyledon and seed coat play a significant role in theprocess of chickpea hardening. Blanco Sinaloa 92 andMocorito 88 might be classified as varieties with highand low proneness, respectively, to the development ofthe HTC condition.
