Notes: Summary Within a short period of time, we observed 6 cases with the appearance of calcium oxalate crystals in the renal tubuli and in the walls of cerebral arterioles. Reviewing the case histories showed that all of these patients had received large doses of xylitol and had shown subsequently disorders of consciousness. A possible deposition of oxalate crystals following high-dose-therapy with xylitol is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The experience with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of 81 patients with primary bone tumours and tumour-like lesions is reported. MRI proved to be a sensitive method of detecting primary bone tumours. Intramedullary and extraosseous parts of bone tumours were, delineated better than by plain films and computed tomography (CT). Surgical clips and Harrington rods did not appreciably limit the estimation of tumour recurrence. MRI provided definite advantages compared to CT in the surgical staging of bone tumours and tumour-like lesions. MRI was found to be an imaging method with low specificity. Differentiation of tissue components, such as haematoma, fat, necrosis, and cystic areas, led to a specific diagnosis only in rare cases. Plain films and CT were found to be superior to MRI in assessing the biological activity and the differential diagnosis of bone tumours and tumour-like lesions.

Notes: Summary Fragmented erythrocytes (schistocytes) were counted in blood smears and Thoma chambers of venous blood from 100 healthy subjects and from 50 patients who underwent various surgical procedures. The results showed to be as follows: 1. The average number of schistocytes in healthy controls of both sexes was 1–2‰ (medium in Thoma chamber 1.4‰, in blood smears 2.03‰, with a range from 0–5‰ and 0–6‰, respectively). 2. There was an increase in the number of schistocytes two hours after a surgical procedure (average 6‰), the degree of which correlated with the extent of the operation. Higher values of fragmented erythrocytes were counted after intraoperative blood transfusion (average 10‰). In most cases schistocyte values returned to normal at about 24 hours after surgery. 3. The highest schistocyte counts (18–35‰) were observed in two patients undergoing splenectomy with persistence of elevated counts for a longer time period. 4. The average schistocyte number in stored blood of various age was 2.5‰. 5. Both counting of schistocytes in Thoma chambers and in blood smears are applicable, though the values obtained with the latter technique are slightly higher. Quantitative estimation of schistocytes proves a useful method for evaluating disturbances in microcirculation.

Notes: Summary It is generally accepted that cancer has strong effects on bone marrow cells (e.g. tumor-associated anaemia). The present investigation studies the proliferation kinetics of haemopoietic cells and the topographic differences in proliferation patterns in the bone marrow of tumor-bearing animals and controls. It was demonstrated that the differences in the cell cycle times, whether between peripheral and central parts of the bone marrow or between the experimental group and the control group, were slight or nonexistent. However, the growth fraction showed an increased proliferation rate in tumor-bearing as compared with normal animals (57% and 37%, respectively).

Notes: Summary The neuropathologic findings on a case of sickle cell anemia in a Sicilian worker in Germany are reported. Based on hemoglobin electrophoresis, sickle cell β-thalassemia could be detected, in which repeated vascular occlusions by sickled erythrocytes are characteristic. These occlusions are accompanied by painful “crises”. Histological examination of cerebral cortex and white matter showed necroses of nerve cells with glia reaction of different states. Lipidic material in varying amounts could be demonstrated in the occluded capillaries and smaller vessels. The origin of the sickling phenomenon is discussed on the basis of experimental findings. Special and professional risks of sickle cell traits are emphasized.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The aim of the present investigations was to study the effectiveness of a cytostatic drug (VCR) during different phases of tumor growth (1st, 7th, 14th day a.t.) and at the periphery and at the centre of the tumor (on the 14th day a.t.). Furthermore the inducement of a partial synchronization in the proliferation of tumor cells was attempted. It was found that the intensity of the cytostatic effect significantly decreased both with the passage of time after transplantation and within the tumor from the periphery to the centre. The changing cytostatic sensitivity probably is due to the diminishing vascular supply and the decreased rate of cell proliferation; especially the decline of the growth fraction. A partial synchronization of the proliferation of tumor cells could not be demonstrated.
