Notes: Animal studies have suggested that working memory may be affected after lesions in the medial temporal lobe, although this assumption has not been corroborated by neuropsychological studies in humans. However, very recently, several functional neuroimaging studies in humans have successfully observed activation of the medial temporal lobe during working memory tasks. The main aim of this study was to investigate the contribution of the medial temporal lobe to the encoding process in spatial working memory. To address this issue we registered the neuromagnetic brain patterns of eight adult volunteers while they performed a spatial working memory task and more perceptual task using identical stimuli. After a initial phase (between 200 and 400 ms) without differences in activation, the medial temporal lobe showed a sustained activity, more evident in the right hemisphere, lasting up to 800 ms during the encoding stage of the spatial working memory task, while the activation in the perceptual task terminated earlier (∼400 ms after stimulus onset). The finding of a continued activation of the medial temporal lobe strongly suggests the contribution of this brain region to encoding operations in working memory.

Notes: Abstract Both cold-acclimated female rats and rats at thermoneutrality received 0.15–0.20 mg daily of 17β-oestradiol over 15 days via a Silastic capsule implanted subcutaneously. Controls received empty implants. Comparison between the oestradiol-treated animals and the untreated controls revealed that at thermoneutrality, oestradiol treatment decreased food intage and body weight gain, but did not affect brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis and composition. By contrast, in cold-acclimated rats, oestradiol treatment did not modify food intake or body weight gain, but it decreased BAT thermogenesis. It is concluded that the effects of oestradiol treatment on BAT depend on the activity of the tissue, i.e. it has no effect on BAT when the tissue is thermogenically inactive, but it decreases cold-induced BAT thermogenesis. It is suggested that oestradiol could be the hormonal factor responsible for the previously observed inactivation of BAT thermogenesis during pregnancy in cold-acclimated rats.

Notes: Abstract It has been shown previously that high plasma levels of oestradiol inhibit brown adipose tissue thermogenesis. Since rats and mice show a close association between thermogenic activity in and sympathetic discharge to brown fat, we measured the noradrenaline turnover in rats with high plasma levels of oestradiol to establish whether the observed inhibition of thermogenic activity is brought about by a reduction in the sympathetic drive to brown adipocytes. Oestradiol-filled Silastic capsules were implanted subcutaneously in female rats previously acclimated either to thermoneutrality or to cold. Control rats received empty implants. After 15 days treatment, noradrenaline turnover was measured by blocking its synthesis with α-methyl-p-tyrosine. As expected, noradrenaline turnover was higher in cold-acclimated rats than in rats kept at thermoneutrality. The presence of high plasma oestradiol levels did not alter sympathetic activity in any of the treated groups despite reducing thermogenic activity. This result reveals that oestradiol dissociates the thermogenic activity of brown adipose tissue from its sympathetic activation. Such dissociation has never been previously reported in rats, although it seems to be common in Syrian hamsters. However the causative factor in this species is unknown.

Notes: Abstract Rectal temperature and oxygen consumption (üüO2) were monitored in female rats acclimated either to cold or to thermoneutrality and with and without chronic administration of oestradiol. The hormone is known to inactivate brown adipose tissue (BAT) and to reduce its response to noradrenaline (NA). The role of sympathetic control was studied by administering NA or the adrenergic blocker propranolol. Oestradiol treatment did not affect rectal temperature in the states of acclimation to thermoneutrality and to cold, nor did it change the hypothermic response of cold-exposed rats to temporary food deprivation. In the cold-acclimated rats, both controls and oestradiol-treated animals exhibited similar degrees of metabolic reduction after propranolol administration in the cold and similar degrees of metabolic activation by NA at thermoneutrality. Rats acclimated to thermoneutrality showed a larger metabolic response to NA when treated with oestradiol. The results suggest that oestradiol, while inactivating the BAT response to NA, activates the NA responsiveness of other metabolically active tissues in cold-induced thermogenesis. The observation of a greater oxidative capacity in the kidney and the rectus abdominis muscle of oestradiol-treated, cold-acclimated rats would be in line with this proposal.

Notes: Abstract Trace level vanadium determination is reported using a dual beam thermal lens spectrometer. The thermal lens was generated using an argon ion beam laser (pump beam) which was focused into a sample cuvette. The thermal lens signal (TLs) was monitored with a He-Ne laser beam and a photodiode detector. Multichannel averager software was developed for processing the transient TLs. The optimal set up, ensuring maximum sensitivity and linear calibration graphs was obtained using experimental design techniques. Under optimized conditions, the detection limits for aqueous and ethanol-water (2+3 v/v) and (4+1 v/v) vanadium complex solutions were, respectively, 0.0071 mg/l, 0.0065 and 0.0039 mg/l.

Notes: Abstract The California AB377 Evaluation Project was established to study the replication of an innovative system of care in three California counties for youth suffering from severe emotional disturbance. Development of the innovative system of care was pioneered in Ventura County, California, and the replications were legislatively enabled through Assembly Bill 377 (AB377). This paper reports evaluative findings about a central goal of the innovative care system: the reduction of use of highly restrictive out-of-home placements though creation and maintenance of coordinated and effective community-based services. Group home facilities are the focus of the evaluation work because these facilities consume the largest proportion of all public expenditures for youth in residential placements in California. More than 10 years of aggregate county and state level monthly expenditure and utilization data are presented. The results indicate that the demonstration counties have generated lower per capita inflation adjusted rates of expenditures and per capita group home placements than California as a whole. The evaluation results provide evidence that an integrated system of care can reduce group home placements. However, the nature, quality and effectiveness of any and/or all alternative services provided remains a topic for further investigation.

Notes: Abstract A novel application of photothermal spectroscopy to the study of surfactant-water systems near the critical micellar concentration is reported. The thermal lens signal was induced by a slightly soluble dye and was measured with a dual-beam thermal lens spectrometer. For the two surfactants considered: nonyl phenol and Triton X-100, sharp variations of the thermal lens signal were observed at the critical micellar concentration (CMC), namely an increase for nonyl phenol and a decrease for triton X-100. These effects are arguably related to micelle formation. Our work serves as an initial assessment of the potential of the technique for the study of disperse systems of a higher complexity or dark systems where conventional techniques are impossible to apply.

Notes: Abstract The atmospheric particulates from the Caracus Valley in Venezuela and the fluvial particulates transported by the Tuy River into the Caribbean sea have been evaluated for Pb, Cu and Zn with the purpose of determining the contamination levels in the study area. The atmospheric particulate samples were collected in the city of Caracas using a low volume sampler whereas the fluvial particulate were collected at the mouth of the Tuy River. The particulate samples were analysed by flame or graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry depending upon the concentration levels of the heavy metal under study. The results obtained for the fluvial particulates enabled estimates to be made of the total anthropogenic flux of Cu (383 ton year−1), Pb (528 ton year−1) and Zn (865 ton year−1). These results yield annual per capita inputs for Cu (96 g),Pb (132 g) and Zn (216 g) which greatly exceed those from global anthropogenic emissions. The weighted average concentration of Pb (1.13 %) found in the atmospheric particulates was much higher than those for Cu (140 mg kg−1) and Zn (200 mg kg−1) and reflects the high motor car traffic in the Caracas Valley. The anthropogenic/natural ratios estimated in this study were as follows: 2.6 for Pb; 1.5 for Cu and 1.5 for Zn. This indicates that anthropogenic inputs for Cu, Pb, and Zn in the study area exceed those from natural sources, cars being the major source for Pb and industrial activities the major sources for Cu and Zn.
